Hello Everyone!

I had just previously shared two other Construction Tales Safety Topics; one blog subject is on ladder safety and the other is on lock out/tag out. This is another quick blog post where I shared another written version of my next Construction Tales Safety Topic on the subject of some major drawings on some major construction jobsites that need to be on hand on an average construction jobsite in New York City. As I have shared in previous posts, I’m now actively creating brand-new YouTube videos and blog safety content. Before I share my recent “Construction Tales Safety Topic” written content and YouTube video content link, allow me to share some updates on my other projects. I have even released my YouTube video content in MP3 form on my Verbally Disastrous podcast platform on major platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pandora Podcasts, and over +20 other podcast platforms. I placed them on my audio account for my main blog, via Anchor.fm. My established “$ugar Momma Baddie” themed clothing and accessory collection is available on both Spring and Shopify ecommerce platforms. Check out the two designs that you can choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. The “$ugar Momma Baddie” Shopify and Spring store links are down below in this Quora blog post. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book and podcast ad”, let’s review my recent Construction Tales Safety Topic written content and video YouTube link that is featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

Construction Tales Safety Topic #13 A: A Main List Of Jobsite Drawings & Letters Needed On A Jobsite On YouTube:

This is a Construction Tales brief safety topic.

In this video, I am going to go over a brief list of some main drawings that are required to be onsite for periodic Department Of Buildings, known by the acronym DOB for short, inspections. DOB inspections are random and can happen at any time. You might ask why is passing a DOB inspection important here in New York City? As site safety managers, we are agents of the Department of Buildings. It is important to ensure that the general and sub-contractors onsite tackle all of the required tasks that are needed in order to work safely according to New York City Building Code. All of the items in this list must stamped and approved from the Department of Buildings before work can get started. There are many requirements that are a must in order to operate in compliance and avoid costly violations and/or jobsite shutdowns.

Here is my list of the main items that you need onsite in order to show the DOB inspector that you are in compliance. Inspectors can pop up onsite at any time during the work day.

Permits– Pull the necessary work permits that relate to the work scope to be performed. Keep an eye on the expiration of the permits and get them replaced as soon as possible.
Sidewalk Shed Plan– A sidewalk shed plan must come with an inspection letter from the qualified person once erected and re-inspected with a letter every six months
Fence Drawings– These fence drawings also require an inspection letter by the designated qualified person. These drawings do not require subsequent inspections every six months after the initial installation
Tenant Protection Plan– A tenant protection plan is basically a planned course of action, in a mapped out series of steps, that outlines what steps a contractor is going to take in order to protect tenants while the building is under construction. On this project, the approved tenant protection plan is in the office and posted in the elevator lobby on each floor.
Architectural Drawings– These drawings are crafted by a qualified engineer that show the technical details of the entire job and all scopes of work. These approved drawings must also be on hand as well.
Site Safety Plan– A site safety plan is written out plan that maps out all scopes of work and the exact plan on how to keep random pedestrians, tenants, and construction workers safe. The main objective is to identify and mitigate the hazards that could pop up during the process of completing the work scope. These plans can slightly be changed, identified, and signed by the site safety manager on an already approved set of drawings.
Pipe Scaffold Drawings– For this particular project, we had to build a 20-story scaffold where the tenants must walk on it temporarily until the old concrete breezeway is chopped out and new concrete is poured. If there is any deviations in the field from the drawings, you must have a letter handy from the engineer of record that the deviation does not diminish the integrity of the design. Of course, these drawings must be approved and the latest copy must be on hand.
Shoring Drawings– Shoring drawings are used for the excavation portion of a jobsite. If your job has any type of this work, be sure to have the approved shoring drawings on hand

Well, my friend, this wraps up what I have for now on introducing you to some main drawings and letters that are needed on a typical construction jobsite here in New York City. Look out for the next video where we discuss the different types of safety equipment and basic safety tips. Stay tuned for these videos that explain this requirement even more in depth.

Safety Topic Of The Day: Meaning & Use Of Lock Out/Tag Out: Part A & B

Photo Credit: Construction Tales Safety Topics- Verbally Disastrous Channel On YouTube

Hello Everyone!

I had just previously shared the Construction Tales Safety Topic of the subject matter on ladder safety. This is a quick blog post sharing the written version of my next Construction Tales Safety Topic on the subject of lock out/tag out. Lock out/tag out is not just for electrical and can include plumbing as well. As I have shared in previous posts, I’m now actively creating brand-new YouTube video and blog safety content. The audio versions of both of my books can be found in four Audible markets that include: France, Dutch, U.K., and the United States. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book and podcast ad”, let’s review my recent Construction Tales Safety Topic written content and video YouTube link that is featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

Construction Tales Safety Topic #12: Part A- What Is A Lock Out/Tag Out System? On YouTube:

PART A:

This is a Construction Tales brief safety topic.

In this video, I am going to talk about an electrical safety subject called, “lock out tag out”. For a person who is not familiar with this term, it is known as an electrical protocol for safely shutting down electrical and/or mechanical equipment for the purpose of temporarily working on the electrical equipment. This lock out tag out program is intended as a protection system against accidental exposure to electrical energy from equipment and machinery. Not attempting to develop a system to turn off the electrical source can be such a hazard for workers. Lock out tag out devices to be used could be a padlock or a device that can latch onto the circuit breaker and be locked out while work is in progress. The ability to de-energize the power source works to secure the energy device being temporarily isolated. Meanwhile a tag out device warns other employees to either not to use the equipment and do not turn back on the same energy source being locked out. Ideally, the tag out should contain the full name, phone number, and photo of the worker who is using the lock out tag out system. During my career, and he happens to be a close friend of mine, I’ve seen the photo of the worker tag out photo actually be a photo of the worker’s back side with his pants slightly slide down exposing the worker’s crack.

How long has the log out tag out safety system been in existence? Lock out tag out was born out of Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.147 that was developed back in 1982 by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA was enacted into law by President Richard Nixon back on December 29, 1970. President Nixon signed into law the Williams-Steiger Occupational Safety and Health Act. This monumental act gave the Federal Government the authority to set and enforce safety and health standards for most of the country’s workers This mandatory code/law was enacted as OSHA 29 CRF 1910.147 by 1989. I have not been able to give credit to the inventor of the lock out tag out system. I only know that the guy works for OSHA.
During my research on the topic, I learned that lock out and tag out have two different meanings. The term “lock out” occurs when an energy source (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal or other) is physically isolated from the system that uses it (a machine, equipment or process). This procedure is done using a variety of lockout padlocks and devices best suited for specific applications. Devices such as circuit breaker lockouts or valve lockouts can be used for more specific lockout jobs.

The term “tag out” is the process of affixing a label, or tag, that communicates information about what is actually being done to the machine or equipment. This is why it is very important to identify the type of work being done.

Key details on a tag may include the following:

• DANGER or WARNING lockout tag
• Instructions (e.g., Do Not Operate)
• Purpose (e.g., Equipment Maintenance)
• Timing
• Name and / or photo of the authorized worker

For the safety of the workers involved, it is important to use both lock out and tag out jointly. This OSHA lock out tag out standard protocol helps to protect workers who routinely service equipment in the workplace. One danger of lock out tag out is ensuring that the source of power being de-energized is the ONLY source of power. In some instances, electrical equipment can be fed alternately from different energy sources. In this case, the workers preparing to do the maintenance must review the electrical drawings ahead of time in order to catch that potential issue. I know of an issue at an airport where an electrician was seriously hurt when the alternate source of power was energized. This was due to a lack of communication that the airport electrical system was temporarily down for maintenance. This is why it is extremely important to hold pre-electrical shut down meetings with all important parties prior to the day when the workers perform the work. Communication is vital to make sure all workers always work safely. In my next video, we are going to discuss the different types of lock out tag out devices that are available for workers on the market for temporary electrical shut downs.

Construction Tales Safety Topic #12: Part B-Review The Different Types Of Lock Out/Tag Out Devices On YouTube:

PART B:

This is a Construction Tales brief safety topic.

Prior to starting this video, I want to be clear that my first video on Lock Out/Tag Out focused more on electrical lock out/tag out than the other types. Actually, there are more lock out/tag out devices than just electrical that exist. In this video, I am going to expand and share a handful of different systems that are used for plumbing and electrical systems. I’m sure that there are even more lock out/tag out systems that exist than what I’m sharing with you in this video. If necessary, I shall create another video and add them in the future. Now that I have cleared up any potential confusion, let’s get started with learning more about some of these lock out/tag out systems together.

What is a lock out/tag out system?

Lock Out/Tag Out Definition:

A lock out/tag out system, also known by the acronym (LOTO), is a safety procedure that is used to ensure that dangerous equipment is properly shut off and not able to be started up again prior to the completion of maintenance or repair work. This lock out protocol requires that those hazardous energy sources are to be “isolated and rendered inoperative” before work can be started on the equipment in question. The isolated power sources are then locked and a tag is placed on the lock identifying the worker and reason the LOTO is placed on it. The worker then holds the key for the lock, ensuring that only they can remove the lock and start the equipment. This prevents accidental startup of equipment while it is in a hazardous state or while a worker is in direct contact with it.
As soon as my son chose to become an apprentice electrician, I purchased and handed a lock out/tag out bag right over to him for his tool bag. I believe that this protocol is one of the most important tools in your tool bag. Where does this requirement for a Lock Out/Tag Out system come from? The OSHA standard for The Control of Hazardous Energy, aka Lock Out Tag Out, comes from Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.147. This OSHA section addresses, practices, and shares procedures that are necessary in order to disable machinery or equipment being worked upon. Thereby, preventing the release of hazardous energy while employees perform servicing and maintenance activities.

The standard outlines measures for controlling hazardous energies such as:

• Electrical
• Mechanical
• Hydraulic
• Pneumatic
• Chemical
• Thermal
• and other energy sources

Six Safety & Lockout/Tagout Procedures:

Let’s look into the six standardized lockout/tagout procedures that should include the following six steps:

• Preparation
• Shutdown
• Isolation
• Lockout/tagout
• Stored energy check
• Isolation verification

Let’s review some photo examples of some lock out tag out systems that are required to be used in order to shut down the equipment prior to being worked on:

Types of Lock Out/Tag Out Systems:

• Ball Valve
• Gate Valve
• Pneumatic Nose
• Butterfly Valve
• Cylinder Valve
• Plug Valve
• Universal Valve
• Clamp On Breaker Lockouts
• Hasp Lockout
• Lockout Padlocks
• Adjustable Cable Lockouts
• Group Lock Out Box
• Lock Out/Tag Out Signs & Posters
• Lockout Kits & Stations
• Plug Lockouts
• Valve Lockouts
o pressurized gas
o wedge-style
o seal tight ball
o rotating gate
o adjustable ball valve lockouts

As I stated in my previous lock out/tag out video, it is crucial that all key management parties are aware of the upcoming equipment shutdown well before the day of the shutdown. This includes a meeting and a complete review of the electrical and plumbing drawings, including the one-line diagram. This one-line diagram will show you all of the items that will also be shut down that are on the load side of the equipment being temporarily taken out of service. All workers should be aware of the shut down as well as their role during this time period. All workers should be trained to handle any potential emergencies that could exist during the shutdown. Important emergency equipment, such as first aid kits, eye wash stations, and fire extinguishers, should be readily available for all workers. Every employee should sit through a toolbox discussion beforehand pertaining to the topic so that they are prepared for a worst-case scenario. In my career, I require what is known as a Method of Procedure, also known as the acronym M.O.P., prior to the start of the shutdown. The Method of Procedure maps out exactly what you need to do from the time you start the shutdown until you end the shutdown. You should know where the nearest hospital or urgent care facility is located beforehand as well. The entire crew even needs to know where the emergency muster point is located. When the job requires a site safety manager, this data is given on day one during new worker orientation. In the event of an emergency, all workers need to head to the emergency muster point for a head count prior to being excused by their foreman to go home for the day. The goal is for you to work safe and go home to your family in the same condition that you came in this morning.

Well, my friend, this wraps up what I have for now on introducing you to the different types of lock out/tag out equipment that is available on the market to protect the average maintenance worker from potential harm and/or even death. Look out for future videos where I share with you even more educational safety videos. I intend on explaining more in-depth what purpose is for each lock out/tag out device spoken about in this video. Stay tuned for future videos that explain other important safety procedures.

Safety Topic Of The Day: Ladder Safety Tips

Photo Credit: Construction Tales Safety Topics- Verbally Disastrous Channel On YouTube

Hello Everyone!

I had previously offered an update on the status of my educational videos. This is a quick blog post sharing the written version of my Construction Tales Safety Topic on the subject of ladder safety. As I have shared in the last post, I’m now actively creating brand-new YouTube video and blog safety content. Before I share my recent “Construction Tales Safety Topic” written content and YouTube video content link, allow me to share some updates on my other projects. I really would like to get back into releasing even more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. However, my time is limited and I have chosen to focus on my safety topic video project. I have even released my YouTube video content in MP3 form on my Verbally Disastrous podcast platform on major platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pandora Podcasts, and over +20 other podcast platforms. I also placed them on my audio account for my main blog. The links for the paperback, e-book, and now audio version for my first children’s book that’s entitled, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” are also down below in this blog post. Both my first children’s book and my #ConstructionTales book are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, and Audible.

Construction Tales Safety Topic #11: Part A- Ladder History & Basic Safety Tips on YouTube:

In this video, I want to review with you some brief history of the ladder and some basic ladder safety tips. The oldest record of a civilization using a ladder is in picture form on the Spider Caves in Spain that date back 10,000 years ago. This does not include a biblical reference, in the book of Genesis, where Jacob’s dream depicts a ladder that goes from Earth to heaven. Ladders are also depicted within ancient Hebrew and Egyptian cultures as well. The first patent for a ladder came from American inventor John H. Basely back in 1862. This type of wooden ladder had hinges that made the ladder foldable for an easier means of mobilization. For a long time, the preferred material of choice for a ladder was wood since aluminum was once an expensive material. By 1867, another American inventor Henry Quackenbush took out his patent for the first type of extension ladder. In 1930, inventor Sam Carbis founded a new industry with the introduction of the aluminum fire ladder for the Aluminum Ladder Company. By 1961, Louisville Ladder worked with Morrison Molded Fiberglass (now known as Strongwell) to develop the world’s first line of portable non-conductive fiberglass ladders.

Now that we have reviewed some ladder history, let’s look at some ladder safety tips. The first tip is to be sure to use the right ladder for the job. Each ladder has a maximum length and load rating. In addition to your own weight, you have to be sure that your equipment and tools do not exceed the ladder’s weight limit. The worker must not use the last two steps of the ladder or three feet. Prior to even using the ladder, you must inspect it for any damage such as loose rungs, side rails, and supports. Check the ladder’s screws, bolts, and hinges to make sure they are tight as well as the general stability of the ladder. Inspect the ladder for any paint, dirt, or grease that can cause slips and falls for the user. Be sure that you do not have your ladder in close proximity to an electrical power source. A wet wooden ladder can conduct electricity and harm the ladder user. Be sure to place the base of the ladder on an even surface. Additionally, ensure that the ladder is protected in high traffic areas with a barricade. When using a step ladder, be sure that the ladder is fully opened up. When using an extension ladder, use the four-to-one ratio. This means that the base should be one foot away from the wall or vertical surface for every four feet of height to the point of support. When climbing onto a roof or platform from a ladder, the ladder must extend at least 3 feet above the edge and be tied off at the top.
While climbing the ladder, be sure to stay near the middle of the ladder and face the ladder while climbing. The climber must maintain three points of contact at all times. This means that the climber must have both feet on the ladder with at least one hand on the side rails when climbing or descending. Carry your tools on a belt or hoist and always keep at least three limbs on the ladder. Do not carry loads that require both of your hands. Instead, hoist up the load with pulleys and a rope to the destination. Try your best to not lean outside of the ladder rails. Keep the base of the ladder and surrounding area free of clutter. Do not use a ladder for something else other than the intended purpose. Do not use a ladder horizontally like a platform. Do no place the base of the ladder on boxes, barrels, or any other unstable bases. Most importantly, do not move or shift a ladder with either a person or equipment still on the ladder. Follow these main safety ladder tips so that you can work safely.

Quora Question- Where Did The Phrase “Bussin’ Bussin” Originate?

Photo Credit: The Latest Construction Tales Safety Topic- Verbally Disastrous Channel On YouTube

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are enjoying your Memorial Day holiday weekend, my friend? I just found out that Anchor.fm is no longer converting my written blogs to audio form. Therefore, I have to figure out an alternate way to accomplish this audio blog goal. I have been sharing even more of my Construction Tales Safety Topic YouTube videos are now available on my Spotify channel. I have been actively creating brand-new YouTube video that also serves as blog safety content. Before I share my latest “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some updates on my other projects. I really would like to get back into releasing even more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. However, my time is limited and I have chosen to focus on my safety topic video project. I believe that I will release my YouTube video content in MP3 form on my Verbally Disastrous podcast platform on Spotify. I have loaded all of my Construction Tales Safety Topic YouTube videos, in MP3 form, on my Spotify channel. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book and podcast ad”, let’s review the question and my answer for a Quora question on the topic of a phrase that kids today say these days. THE POSED QUESTION:

  • “Where did the phrase bussin’ bussin’ originate?”

By: Jen Carney

MY RESPONSE:

“The Gen Z youth of today (my 17-year old son says it) use that phrase, ‘bussin bussin’. I’ve never heard of it until the past few years. It just means that a person, place, or thing is ‘really good’. Saying it twice is a means to express that something is REALLY good. I learned that this current meaning has evolved from the origin. The term ‘Bussin’ is an African American Vernacular English that means, ‘to dance’. The earliest recorded date where the term bussin’ was used was back in 2009. I have never heard my Generation X peers use that phrase as of yet. As with anything, that could change in the future. In social media realm, I’m sure that term is used a lot. May you avoid the temptation to recite the urban dictionary as much as possible 🙂 #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls”

By Leslie M. Jasper

This wraps up my thoughts on the meaning behind that Gen Z slang term. I’ve never used it nor do I plan to use it in the future. I would feel silly attempting to use it in a sentence. Have you ever heard of this word being used before?? Help a sister out by subscribing to my Spotify channel. This is short story #11 entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.

Safety Topic Of The Day: Comparing Brushed Vs Brushless Power Tool Motors

Photo Credit: Construction Tales Safety Topic #10: Part C- Comparing Brushed Vs Brushless Power Tool Motors On YouTube

Hello Everyone!

I sure hope you are being productive and doing well on your side of the globe. I’m sharing with you a third Construction Tales Safety Topic #10 blog post that discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using either brushed or brushless power tool motors. Again, I apologize for not coming on for a period of time. However, I’m now actively creating brand-new YouTube video and blog safety content. As I have shared many times before, creating videos are very time consuming. It’s no surprise that my goal is to become a well known YouTube creator. Before I share my latest “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. I really would like to get back into releasing even more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. However, my time is limited and I have chosen to focus on my safety topic video project. The audio versions of both of my books can be found in four Audible markets that include: France, Dutch, U.K., and the United States. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review my latest Construction Tales Safety Topic video that will be featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

While researching on the topic of power tools, I decided to share that direct current motors, known as the acronym “DC” for short, are classified as either brushed or brushless. Brushed motors have been around for over one hundred years since the birth of electricity. Meanwhile, brushless motors were created back in 1962 during the advancement of solid-state electronics. The first brushless motor was introduced by T.G. Wilson and P.H. Trickey. The “cat whisker” was the first solid-state electronic component that was first developed back in 1906. Stay tuned for future videos where I break down solid-state electronic components. In this video, we shall review how some motor components work together along with the advantages and disadvantages of brushed versus brushless motors.

These DC motors convert electric current into rotational motion. What is the difference between brushed versus brushless motors? The primary difference between brushed and brushless motors would be that brushed motors are mechanically driven while brushless are electronically driven. Brushed motors contains both a stationary part that is called a stator and a moving part that is called a rotor. The stator has permanent magnets while rotors have electromagnets. Another key part that works with the rotor and stator is known as a commutator. The commutator is a specialized slip ring that is typically used on DC motors. The commutator transfers electrical power between the stationary housing and the rotating armature with the bonus purpose of reversing the electrical current direction. The direction of the current is reversed every one hundred and eighty degrees. By flipping the polarity of the magnetic pull, this is what causes the continuation of the spinning of the power tool. This also ensures that the torque continues in the same direction. The carbon brushes work with the commutator, stator, and rotor to transfer the electrical voltage. The voltage creates an electromagnetic field within the rotor.

Now that we have a basic understanding on brushed versus brushless motors, let’s look at the pros versus cons between the two types of DC motors. What are the disadvantages of using a brushed motor? The disadvantages are the following:

  1. less efficiency
  2. hotter motor
  3. shorter life span
  4. requires more maintenance

What are the advantages of using a brushed motor? The advantages are the following:

  1. affordable cost to produce
  2. ability to be mass produced
  3. simple to operate
  4. reliable
  5. available in many sizes and ratings
  6. easy controls
  7. good on lower duty cycles

What are the disadvantages of using a brushless motor? The brushless disadvantages are the following:

  1. Requires electronic controller
  2. More expensive
  3. More complex.

What are the advantages of using a brushless motor? The advantages of using a brushless motor include the following:

  1. Precise speed control
  2. Better suited to continuous or long-running duty cycles
  3. Longer life
  4. Less maintenance
  5. High efficiency

It appears that brushless power tool motors are the choice to make. What is your motor of choice? Well, my friend, this wraps up what I have for now on how a DC motor operates along with the pros versus cons of choosing between a brushed or brushless power tool. Safety Topic Of The Day: The History & Technology That Contributes To Power Tools

Photo Credit: Construction Tales Safety Topic #10: Part A- The History & Technology That Contributes To Power Tools

Hello Everyone!

I’m sharing with you a second Construction Tales Safety Topic blog post that discusses the history and technology that contributes to modern day power tools. I’m coming to you to share this post on a spring-like kind of day here in New York City. As I had shared earlier today, I actually finished catching up on crafting blog content into bite-sized YouTube videos. Now that I have finished catching up on old blog posts, I now have to create brand-new content. Let me tell you that it is a bunch of work creating videos-very time consuming. As I shared before, my goal is to become a well known YouTube creator. Another goal is to get in front of the camera and be the person to deliver this video content. Before I share my “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. I really would like to get back into releasing even more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. However, my time is limited and I have chosen to focus on my safety topic video project. The audio versions of both of my books can be found in four Audible markets that include: France, Dutch, U.K., and the United States. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review this latest Construction Tales Safety Topic video that will be featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

In this blog post and Verbally Disastrous YouTube video, I’m going to discuss the history of power tools and how they became the sophisticated tradesperson’s assistant of today. I have learned that the current global market for power tools is a $33 billion-dollar (USD) industry. Let’s take a look back to see how power tools were born and evolved. Technically, the first ‘power tool’ that was invented was created by the ancient Egyptians. This power tool is known as a lathe. The lathe was designed in order to help humans cut shapes in wood. Apparently, this ancient tool has been classed as a “power tool”. However, the lathe didn’t actually have either electric or battery power. In order to operate this tool, one person turned it while the other utilized the lathe. Despite being a two-man tool, operating an early lathe still required a lot of effort. According to my research, the first ever electric drill in the entire globe was invented back in 1889 by Arthur James Arnot. Mr. Arnot was a Scottish electrical engineer and inventor who was born in Hamilton, Scotland. Mr. Arnot attended the West of Scotland Technical College out of Glasgow, Scotland. Upon completing his education, Mr. Arnot moved to London to gain experience within electrical engineering under the leadership of Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti. This engineering duo began working on high voltage alternating current transmission work. Roughly around this time period, Thomas Edison was involved with high voltage direct current transmission work. After this crucial work experience, Mr. Arnot got the opportunity to work in Melbourne, Australia in order assist with building a Union Electric Company power plant. While he started working in Australia, he also worked on creating and even patented his electric drill by 1889. This drill was intended for miners to cut through rock.

Photo Credit: Arthur James Arnot’s Drill Patent

The German power tool company C&E Fein was born back in 1867. C&E Fein was launched as a “workshop for electrical and mechanical apparatus” by Wilhelm Emil Fein. By 1895, C&E Fein combined the power of an electric motor with a manual drill to develop their version of the early power tool. This very heavy drill, that clocked in at a hefty 16.5 pounds, was powered by a large but relatively weak DC electric motor. In all actuality, this first drill didn’t turn very fast at all. In order to even use the drill, the operator had to use both hands, grab it by both handles that were placed opposite of the motor, lean against a chest plate at the back of the drill, and help press it into the work surface. The world’s first power tool appeared to be cumbersome and unproductive by modern standards. By 1908, C&E Fein became a ‘specialized factory for power tools’. Initial efforts from the company focused on quickly improving the drill by making it even more powerful and lightweight. The next power tool to follow was the portable sanding machine. The C&E Fein tool that was developed next was the pneumatic hammer drill in 1914. This hammer drill technology was created with an air-cushioned striking mechanism. By 1927, the wood working industry benefited from the release of an electric handsaw. The automotive and aircraft industries also benefited from the development of the jigsaw back in 1933.

The birth of another power tool company, known globally as Black and Decker, has a rather unique and interesting story. Business partner Dunkin Black sold a car, back in 1910, and used the car proceeds in order to start a small machine shop. He teamed up with his friend Alonzo Decker and launched their business in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1914, Black and Decker both came up with some great ideas and used them to improve the C&E Fein power drill. By 1914, Black and Decker infused the design of the Colt .45 automatic pistol into their own improved version of the power drill. By 1916, Black & Decker had begun making their famous pistol-grip, trigger-switch electric drill. Remarkably, all modern handheld electric drills are descended from this evolved design. The big advantage to the Black & Decker design is that it can be operated by one person versus two people for the C&E Fein original power drill.

An interesting fact that I learned is that Black and Decker was hired by NASA to design tools for various space missions. This relationship pushed Black and Decker to create quite a few innovative power tools for space missions. These tools underwent rigorous testing, such as anti-gravity, extreme temperature, and atmosphere testing, in order to qualify for important missions. These Black and Decker power tools were tested under water at major depths. Other tests involved bringing power tools to high altitudes followed by sharp nose dives in order to simulate anti-gravity conditions that occur in space. A cordless rotary hammer drill was created specifically for the Apollo moon program. Astronauts needed the drill to extract moon rock samples. On the Gemini project, a zero-impact wrench was required spun bolts in zero gravity without impacting the astronaut operating the wrench. Surprisingly enough, the introduction of various Black and Decker cordless power tools happened before the company’s contract with NASA. Black and Decker needed to be high tech prior to developing a relationship with NASA. The introduction of the first cordless screw gun was unveiled back in 1961. Black and Decker even crafts various types of medical instruments and even the small, cordless vacuum cleaner that’s known as a Dustbuster.

Obviously, the inventions of various electrical supply systems were required prior to introducing power tools. It wasn’t that long ago when humans relied heavily on oil lamps and fire for basic human consumption such as heat and home cooking. I was previously led to believe that the famous innovator Thomas Edison was the man, myth, and legend who invented the incandescent electric lamp back in 1879. However, I learned that he merely perfected this powerful piece of technology. In actual reality, the first incandescent bulb was born back in 1761. Mr. Edison was known to be really good at perfecting existing ideas. Rumor has it that, in a single day back in 1888, he wrote down a hundred and twelve ideas. Mr. Edison is credited with patenting a newly evolved product roughly every eleven days. Here are some of the inventions that belong to Mr. Edison’s long-lasting legacy: the phonograph, the kinetoscope, the dictating machine, the alkaline battery, the electric meter, a sap extractor, a talking doll, the world’s largest rock crusher, an electric pen, a fruit preserver, and even a tornado-proof house. Even if he grabbed the inventions that were initially crafted by others, it is indeed an art to re-engineer important technology that’s within it’s infancy. Much of this early technology are things that the average person takes for granted today. His ability to be photographed, during that era with very limited marketing, with the light bulb is what gave the public that same general impression. Thomas Edison was a household name since he had his name on many household appliances.

Let’s not forget the important contributions of Serbian-born Nikola Tesla. The electrical panel system is the average American is an alternating current system or known as AC for short. You can thank Tesla for that major contribution. Additionally, Tesla developed the ability to transmit power over power lines for long distances. The brilliant contributions of engineer Thomas E. Murray made the possibility of the New York City power grid even possible. Mr. Murray was involved in developing the modern safe delivery method of electricity from the electrical grid to the average modern building and important infrastructure throughout the United States. Another major contribution from Mr. Murray was the development of the electric motor back in 1821. The average human doesn’t fully understand the impact of being able to safely harness electricity to where we can coexist with limited major complications. Mishandling electricity for the average mere mortal could result in either severe disfiguration or death. The discovery of electromagnetic induction happened, courtesy of British physicist Michael Faraday, back in the 1830’s. This discovery aids in harnessing electricity as a force that can be controlled to improve productivity. There are laws that were observed that aided in learning how to safely harness electricity. One of the main principles of electrical theory is Ohm’s law that was created by German physicist George Ohm back in 1827. Ohm’s Law states that the current flow through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference (voltage) and inversely proportional to the resistance. The physical unit of resistance in electricity, known as an Ohm, was named after the accomplished physicist. Of course, there are many more contributors when speaking on the history of power tools. My goal is to break down these other contributors and topics into manageable bite sizes in order to offer a basic understanding that I will share in future videos.

This concludes what I have on the history and technology that contributes to modern power tools. Please help me and subscribe to my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel. I shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon.
