Vol. #35: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

How is your Tuesday morning going? The weather is improving gradually here in New York City!! How about in your town?? My illustrator Anastasia and I, from Tad_Art on Fiverr, are actually finished with Not All Girls Play With Dolls illustrations!!! As I said before, I have to hunt down some YouTube videos in order to figure this out how to get it properly formatted and go live on Amazon. The goal has been to have my children’s book released and live on Amazon by April 2022! 🙂 I’m going to give Book Bildr a shot with getting it ready to go live on Amazon. I don’t have the patience to figure out all of the technical things for the book. Have you ever worked on getting a children’s book online? Are you a budding author who just launched your book/podcast!? It’s important to have all of the social media platforms and build your brand via networking with others. I find great power in the hashtag as well. My hashtags are #LeslieMJasper, #ConstructionTales, and #VerballyDisastrous. Share with me your hashtag and connect with me on social media. If you could also network with my 16-year-old son John’s “Call To Action Marketing” business (hashtag #CTAMarketing), that would be helpful and highly appreciated. This post is intended to share even more work of some independent authors, such as myself, and earn some good karma in the process. Why not offer you a taste of a variety of authors with different content? Let me know if you have discovered a new author during this “Showcased Author Series”? My objective is to pick out different authors that offer a variety of media content. For the record, I know nothing about the author other than what is showcased in the author article that was shared, via Awesome Gang. Feel free to copy and paste and share this content on your blog, if you like. As an author, if you want to add more information, drop it down in the comment section below and I will edit and add at my earliest convenience. For now, I’m connecting with the authors in an effort to build my author network. Hopefully, they will follow me back on social media. I’m game to cross promote each other on social media as well. Just let me know or re-tweet one of my posts and I will automatically return the favor on Twitter. I’m totally cool with many ways to help each other market each other. When you are a small content creator, it is important to help others out. I’ve even submitted #ConstructionTales to both Awesome Gang and Book Reader Magazine recently. I shall also submit my children’s book real soon to Awesome Gang and other avenues once it goes live. I’m actually getting excited for the release of this project!! My first children’s book #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls is intended to empower young kids to pursue their passions even if it is not normally the tradition in their society.

Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. For now, here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Jeanette Watts

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
How are you defining “books” and “written?” I’ve published five, and my sixth book will be out March 14th. But I’ve also got half-written books, books that I’ve written that aren’t ripe yet, books in other genres than the ones I’ve written in so far. It gets complicated, when I have an unpublished erotica series, AND there are children’s books that I need an illustrator for.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“My Dearest Miss Fairfax.” I have two other books that are Jane Austen-inspired, so I belong to a lot of Jane Austen chat groups. I wrote a comment in defense of Emma (the character, not the book). For all her faults, she has a generous heart. But in the course of the conversation, I ended up intrigued by the end of writing a novel from the point of view of her…well, I’ll call her rival, for lack of a better term. Or maybe frenemy? Anyway, I reread Emma, then went to the used bookstore and bought a beat up used copy that I could take a highlighter to, and I read it again – and this book is the result of hours of carefully extracting every bit of Jane Fairfax’s life that is buried in Emma.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know how unusual it is, but I love to write in pretty places. Hotel lobbies while my husband is at a conference. An Air BnB by the beach, or in the woods. I’ve rented cabins in Allegheny National Forest, and stayed in a friend’s cabin in Canada, looking at Lake Erie from the opposite shore than I usually see. I love traveling and writing. Wineries are fabulous places to write. So is the library where I currently live in Champaign, Urbana.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Well, Jane Austen, obviously. I grew up adoring Gone With the Wind (and its author Margaret Mitchell), so my first book is historical fiction set in Pittsburgh in the Gilded Age, heavily influenced by Margaret Mitchell. She was a journalist, so she knew how to do her homework. There are some very subtle historical details buried in Gone With the Wind. I wonder how many people have noticed the references to abortion? There are quite a few.

Another writer who has strongly inspired my writing is Edith Wharton. I have tried in my first two books to make Pittsburgh society come to life as clearly as she did with New York society.

What are you working on now?
Well, once “My Dearest Miss Fairfax” is well and truly launched, my husband is finishing new cover art for my romantic comedy, “Jane Austen Lied to Me.” Once I get that relaunched, I was in the middle of writing a textbook series on historical dancing when I got distracted by the Jane Fairfax project. I really do want to finish the dance books. They are for small historical museums all over the country who have school programs, and festivals, and no one employed there knows anything about dancing in the eras they teach about.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love going to book festivals all over the country! I don’t know if it’s my “best” method. But it is my favorite. It is so much fun to get to spend a weekend talking with a festival full of voracious readers. I’ve met so many amazing people there. Inspiring people.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t start writing because you think you are going to make money at this, unless you realize the first thing you have to do is spend a lot of money. It’s like most other business ventures: if you are going to open a store, you have to buy a building, buy the merchandise, hire people to stock the shelves and help customers. Same with writing. You aren’t writing a book. You are starting a business. You are going to spend several thousand dollars getting a product worth selling AND getting it into readers’ hands.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From the artistic side: my college professor talked with us about the writing process, and said do NOT censor yourself as you write. You’ll never get anywhere. Just write it all down, spit it all out on paper, then go back and edit. If your censor monkey is really preventing you from getting anything down on paper to start with, give it a shot and a beer and tell it to go to sleep for a while. Only in Wisconsin would you have a college professor advocating drinking…I am old enough that I started college when the drinking age was 18, not 21. But I have never had writer’s block. How much can I blame all the wineries that I write at? I don’t know. My coffee shop around the corner from my house is a good place to write, too. It has a pretty patio in the summer.

From the marketing side: network. You can’t just ask your friends to buy your book when it comes out. If they put up a review on Amazon for you, Amazon will see that you are friends on Facebook, and they will remove that review. You need acquaintances through a network of connections that have to do with what you write about, and help each other getting the word out.

What are you reading now?
I just finished “A Visitors Guide to Jane Austen’s England, and after I get through my Smithsonian Magazine and the latest National Geographic History Magazine, I haven’t decided if I’m going to tackle Mary Chestnut’s diaries from the Civil War, Mark Twain’s autobiography, of David McCullough’s book on Theodore Roosevelt. Funny thing, I write historical fiction, but I don’t read much historical fiction. I love biographies and history books. It means that when you read my historical fiction, you can trust any historical fact in it. I do my homework. I don’t even stop doing homework after the book is published… nice thing about the publishing industry as it is, I can always go in and fix a mistake.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Besides the dance instructional books for historical museums, I have so many more projects to tackle! One book that I had started writing was about Belle daCosta Greene, JP Morgan’s librarian. Some of the research I needed to do was in Florence Italy, and then Covid put a stop to any trips to see materials that weren’t digitized yet. Now, someone else has just released a novel on that very topic! As soon as I get caught up on those other 3 books I mentioned, I need to go buy that book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Shelby Foote’s The Civil War. My copy is broken into 3 volumes, does that mean that’s all I get to bring? If I’m allowed the books, I’ll take the complete works of Edith Wharton, and an anthology of all Jane Austen’s letters – because, I’m sorry to say, I still haven’t read her letters! Which is a disgraceful state of affairs.

Showcased Author- 2.) Kingsley Osajie

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Kingsley Osajie, I am the author of the book Cindy and Her Beautiful Bird. It is my first published book; and I have other ones coming later. I am an astounding, talented, prolific and Heart-based Writer. I write in many categories as inspired or led by the Universe. I write on: Spirituality, LGBT, Inspiration, Personal Development, Life, Culture, Feminism, Humour, Black Lives Matter, Religion, Relationship and others.

Kingsley believes that he can use his writings to inspire, heal, empower, liberate, teach and enlighten Humanity into embracing Higher Consciousness. Kingsley’s vision for the society is one where truth, justice, love, compassion and unity dwells. He strongly believes that people should be treated fairly and equally no matter their skin colour, gender, culture and sexual orientation.

Here are some cool features of Kingsley: quirky, maverick, genial, humble, compassion, adventure/travelling and spending time in Nature

To learn more about Kingsley, visit his beautiful website where he blogs with passion and compassion (www.kingsley-osajie.com)

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is Cindy and Her Beautiful Bird. It was inspired by my love for children and the song by Mary McKee titled My Songbird.

I can be crazy some times (LOL); I often joke to people that Cindy is my child. I will say, “I have two children Cindy and Quimby…” (Quimby is the brother to Cindy in this story). In turn they will ask me, “how come you have two children when you are not yet married yet”?

Anyway, I still consider Cindy and Quimby my children (do not worry about their mother. She is fine…hahahaha!!). The reason I call Cindy and Quimby my children is because they are my brainchildren and such I consider them my children in way—kind of…(winks, smiles and kisses).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. I infuse my quirkiness and maverickness into my writing. As one who does not really follow the consensus; my writing reflects some kind of eccentricity! Plus, I do not follow routine when writing. I write when I am aroused to write. That could mean any time of the day or place. Sometimes it could even be in the bush! (Lol)

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite authors are: Buchi Emecheta, Cyprian Ekwensi, SMO Aka, Charles Dickens, Tea Obreht, Chinua Achebe, John Grisham, Robert Kiyosaki, Danielle Steele and host of others.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a Young Adult Nonfiction about a South African boy. It is a must read because even my editor made a very heartwarming and remarkable comment about my story and style of writing. It should be ought subsequently.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use variety of ways; sharing my book on Authors groups and other online book platforms

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. Hang in there. On my journey to becoming a published author I was rejected by 13 publishers before I finally found a publisher that agreed to publish my book. It required faith, focus and positive thinking. Plus believing that I am worthy of being a published author and knowing my worth.

Just know that your book has its own audience. Everyone has their own audience and the Universe has more than enough space for everyone to express their passions and shine their lights. Do not let anyone talk you down!!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
As an author, the best advice I have ever heard is keep writing.

What are you reading now?
I am reading a book about Dragons.

What’s next for you as a writer?
What I am hoping to achieve as a Writer is to have my books turned into a movie. For example, I have had the intention of having my book (Cindy and Her Beautiful Bird) turned into a children’s cartoon movie such as Snow White, Cinderella, etc

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I will take An Awakening, Mapping Your Dream by Suzanne Hosang, Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht, Second Class Citizen by Buchi Emecheta, Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Passage is the title of the work.
It comes from a love of Native American cultures combining this with the many cultures I have met during my travels. I thought I would blend these many stories I have heard as a child into one work. What authors, or books have influenced you?
Issac Asimov, Stephen King, Brahm Stoker, and of course Clive Cussler. However, the one thing that most influenced me was as a boy growing into manhood. The stories my Grandfather would tell night after night over the fire in the woods. He’s been gone now these many years, but that above all else influences me to this day.

What are you working on now?
Several works all at the same time, I write funny like that?
A.I. – A work on what if it’s not what you think it is?
Ancient – An age-old city rises from its grave, if it’s not stopped we all?
Tempest – A work on The dark plans of the Nazi empire and its reach into modern governments to this day.

Vol. #34: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Let’s get through this Friday afternoon so we can start our weekend. Did anyone say TGIF!?! The weather is currently chilly yet decent here on the streets of New York City. I shall take it! How are you doing today?! My illustrator Anastasia and I, from Tad_Art on Fiverr, are almost finished with Not All Girls Play With Dolls!!! I’m trying to figure out the free way to set the book up for free since Createspace tools are now gone!!! I’m so annoyed with that!! I have to hunt down some YouTube videos in order to figure this out real soon. The goal is to have my children’s book released and live on Amazon by April 2022! 🙂 Are you a budding author who just launched your book/podcast!? Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. For now, here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Sonya Lawson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I’m Sonya Lawson and I like to write stories about magic with a bit of mayhem, struggle, and sass thrown in for good measure. I’ve written a lot in my life, both as an academic for many years and as a fantasy author. As of today I have two novels completed. They are a contemporary fae fantasy duology.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first novel, Sabrina and The Lady, was released in February 2022. It was inspired by (and also references) an old John Milton play from 1634 titled Comus. Hence the name of the duology – The Comus Duology. It follows the struggles of two women who are best friends. Sabrina is a human academic thrown into the fighting of the Fae court while Nin is a Fae princess doing her best to survive in and outside of that court.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I think my writing habits are pretty average. Other habits, however…

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many! Milton, of course, was a big influence on this duology in particular. I also love the classics in general. In terms of contemporary fantasy, Pratchett, Moning, Gaiman, Maas, and Hamilton are big influences on my writing. I also read widely in lots of genres, so I like to take inspiration and influence from all over, not only in fantasy.

What are you working on now?
The Comus Duology will be completed with the publication of The Queen and The Scholar in May of 2022. I’m also currently finishing up a long (30k+word) high fantasy novella featuring dragons and magic.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m new to book promotion, so I’m doing so much to get the word out to readers it all feels a bit of a blur.
Anywhere authors can directly relate/speak to readers (like here, social media, interview sites or podcasts) really seems like the best way forward for promotion.
My author website, sonyalawson.com, is also really useful because it has the best, most up-to-date info about me and what I’m working on at the moment. To get freebies and additional tidbits to my readers, my monthly newsletter is a huge help (and you can sign up for that on my website).

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, read, and share/talk about both. That’s the best advice. The more you talk writing (your own or others) the more you learn about craft. The more you share your writing, and read what others have written, the better you become at recognizing what works for you as a writer and a reader.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
A direct quote from an old grad school professor: “Sometimes good is good enough.” We try for perfection too much and realistically can never reach it. But we can get good results even if they are not perfect. I try to tell myself this often and keep it in mind, especially when I’m writing. Getting a good story out is the end goal for me. I don’t need perfection. Good is good enough.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado and All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody & Christine Lynn Herman

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next series project is a urban fantasy quartet based in Columbus, OH that pulls on the Lovecraft mythos.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Such a hard question, so I’m going to cheat just a little bit!

  1. Terry Prachett – Lords and Ladies (one of the all time best books about evil elves)
  2. Angela Carter – Burning Your Boats (collected short stories)
  3. Laurell K Hamilton – Club Vampyre (collection of the first 3 Anita Blake novels)
  4. Mary Shelley – Frankenstein (because it’s my absolute favorite novel of all time)

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I love reading as much as I love writing psychological suspense thrillers. Harlan Coben, Taylor Adams, Theresa Driscoll, Riley Sager, C.J. Tudor, and J.D. Barker are just a few of my favorite authors. I fell in love with books at an early age, but I was drawn in by the internet and subsequently achieved bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer information systems. When I’m not reading, writing, or programming, I’m on the road, running or cycling. I am fortunate to live next to the great Colorado Rockies where I have road cycled hundreds of miles and can fly anywhere in the USA in less than four hours. This is important because it decreases the travel needed to achieve my goal of running a marathon in each of the fifty states. As of 2022, I have eighteen more to go. Wish me luck. Also, as of 2022, I have written three novels, all set for publication this year. My wife, two children, and a Boston Terrier Ogre mix named Fiona tolerate my excessive behavior, and I love them for it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
In the mid-2000s, my family and I lived in a cult on the edge of a protected forest for roughly three years. My latest novel, The Teaching, is a thriller mystery based on my experience there.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do much of my writing without a computer or a pen. I write in my head and type it up later. Inspiration often comes in the moments immediately after waking up or on long runs through my neighborhood.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
A.J. Finn’s “Woman in a Window,” Theresa Driscoll’s “I am Watching You,” Alex Michaelides “The Silent Patient,” and Rachel Caine’s “Stillhouse Lake” immediately come to mind. Less contemporary influences include Alfred Hitchcock, Shirley Jackson, and Edgar Allan Poe.

What are you working on now?
I’m finishing my third novel, The Excursion. In this “Rainman meets The Most Dangerous Game” thriller, a neurodivergent twenty-something disappears in the mountains of Colorado, and a madman goes on a hunting trip.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My newsletter goes directly to the people I care about most. There is no better promotion than honest, word-of-mouth exchanges between those who have enjoyed my writing.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Authors who truly love to write don’t need advice. They need time, persistence, humility, and encouragement. With that, everything will fall into place.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When you get knocked down, get back up again.

What are you reading now?
Every Last Secret by Alessandra Torre.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll be publishing three psychological thriller novels this year, and I plan to keep this cadence for the foreseeable future. Each of my novels explore mental concerns ranging from brainwashing to addiction to autism to narcissism to . . . stay tuned for more.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Different Seasons by Stephen King, Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a 24 year old Admin Assistant living in the UK with my family. I’ve written one book which is my debut novel, which took three years to write.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Two Worlds Collide is my debut novel. The idea came about on one of our family holidays to Cornwall which we take every year. With my headphones in I remember we were driving along a road which overlooked a beach and I saw a lifeguard riding on a quad bike which sparked an idea in my head. For the rest of the trip I was scribbling down all my thoughts which gradually became a plot for a story – this became a three year project and my first ever book to be published.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say unusual but I love to put my earphones in with a coffee shop ambiance and soft jazz music playing in the background. If I can’t get to a coffee shop, there’s a specific YouTube video which is set in a cafe, it plays for about 4 hours and it’s so great. I think I actually prefer it to listening to music as it eases my mind and there aren’t any distracting lyrics so I can enter my creative headspace.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jodi Ellen Malpas is an author who really got me into reading again, I remember my mum raving about her ‘This Man’ series so I gave them a go and fell in love.

Another author is Estelle Maskame – she is 24 years old and an international best selling author. I think the fact that she’s the same age as me, having achieved what she has, is a real inspiration and motivation for me.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on the second book to my Two Worlds series – hopefully this one won’t be three years in the making.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Influencers, influencers, influencers. I think Instagram is a great place to find book reviewers and influencers with a decent amount of followers who are willing to help promote your book. Youtube is also a good method of finding people with a following who review books. Approaching them and offering to gift them your book is always a good way of getting your name out there.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up. It’s possibly one of the most amazing things to have written and finished a novel, now you’re an author and want people to read your hard work – approach as many people as you can, research as many promotional websites/companies as you can and don’t give up!
Oh, and write your second book! Once people get a piece of your writing they’re going to want more and that’s a huuuuge compliment… give them what they want!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There’s no such word as ‘can’t’.

What are you reading now?
My Policeman by Bethan Roberts – it’s eye opening.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Write more! I’m currently working on my second novel so that’s the priority at the minute, but I have so many ideas which I’m itching to get started on.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Never Give Up: A Life of Adventure by Bear Grylls
Scavengers by Darren Simpson
The Forbidden by Jodi Ellen Malpas

I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.

Advice: Meaning Of “Praise By Name, Criticize By Category”

Hello Everyone!

How is your Friday going today!? I have another quiet mood on my jobsite today. I can’t really bitch about the weather here in New York City. Well, I technically can but I won’t today. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you another piece of Quora advice that is a rather unique to me. This subject is on the metaphor known as, “praise by name, criticize by category”. Have you ever heard this phrase being uttered before? I know I have not ever heard it in my life. It appears to be a veiled way of delivering a message. I know most people do not like private much less public confrontations at all. Therefore, they craft ways to get out the message yet have it veiled as a blanket statement. As a straight shooter who is very used to people who speak their minds rather directly, this is a sissy move to me. I’m used to dudes cursing at each other, fix the problem, and keep it moving while at work. God knows my own father was an ultra dictator when he didn’t like how shit was being done. I would get my ass chewed up one side and down the other. However my experiences, I do respect and acknowledge that not all folks are cut from the same cloth. We all have different learned ways of addressing issues. Therefore, I understand that different approaches are super necessary. Many people cannot take on feedback and respond with rage and violence. I know that when it comes to offering work performance feedback, it’s not worth getting into a fist fight during a tussle with a disgruntled worker. Some people wake up and choose violence. I agree with you that I’m not about that life. Therefore, I do understand why these strategic forms of delivery are needed in the professional world. I did Google the phrase, after I wrote the advice post, and found out that Warren Buffett is the originator of the phrase. Apparently, the goal of the phrase is to say that you should praise an individual since that can have a lasting impact. The individual will take pride in the compliment and will work harder since they are being recognized for their good work. However, it’s undesirable to throw a person under the bus for when bad things that happen. I would imagine that singling out a person is a morale killer for the rest of the group. The group would pose the question that, since one guy is getting singled out today, who is getting singled out tomorrow? Calling a single person out in a public setting amongst the group is not a good idea at all ever!! Let me know if you have ever had to approach a co-worker in either a public or private manner down in the comment section below? If you disagree with my interpretation, let me know how you would interpret it? I would be very interested in your take especially if it is the total opposite of mine. Please read the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What is the meaning of the phrase “praise by name, criticize by category”?”

By Rose Anne Campbell

MY RESPONSE:

“I interpret that phrase to advise a person build a person up individually and criticize in bulk and to not target an individual with criticism. Sometimes if you constantly criticize someone, they will quit trying at some point or stop listening to the feedback. If you criticize a category, it could be a polite way to give feedback to the individual under the pretense that it is for the group. It may be a slick way to get feedback in while not intending to single a person out. Many people are not fond of confrontation. It’s a slick way to deliver the message without facing confrontation. Hopefully, the person will take the hint that it’s geared for their ears. Good luck with those ventures. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

Vol. #33: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Let’s get through this Friday morning so we can start our weekend.

Showcased Author- 1.) Matt Hiebert

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Book of Days is my second published novel. My first book, Blackhand, was a fantasy published my New Babel Books back in 2013.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Book of Days: Thirty Years after the Apocalypse was inspired by the novels True Grit and A Clockwork Orange. I loved the narrative voice of True Grit. Clockwork Orange, well, that was a different kind of inspiration. I’ve been a zombie fan since seeing Night of the Living Dead at the midnight movie in Panama City back in 1977. I always wanted to write a story about what life might be like decades after the zombie apocalypse. No fortified houses or malls. Nobody trying to figure out “what’s going on.” I wanted to write about a society that had adapted to the living dead.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’ve never had writer’s block. I used to outline intensely but now I’m kind of a pantser. I’ve completed NaNoWriMo twice and writing those novels was a joy! It was like reading them rather than writing them.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Doc Savage by Lester Dent, Shibumi by Trevanian, Nine Princes in Amber by Zelazny, World War Z by Max Brooks, Eyes of the Overworld by Jack Vance. All of Tobias Wolff. All of Raymond Carver. True Grit by Charles Portis.

What are you working on now?
A sword and planet fantasy. I wrote an 82,000 word first draft in November for NaNoWriMo. Revisions will take longer……

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon. Hopefully Awesome Gang!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing is your only goal. Produce!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Lawrence Block’s books on novel writing. Stephen King On Writing. John Gardner’s On Becoming a Novelist.

What are you reading now?
Kolchak the Night Strangler and a Western called Deadwood that has nothing to do with the awesome HBO series but is a lot of fun.

What’s next for you as a writer?
A movie deal or Netflix series.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Collected Raymond Carver. Collected Harlan Ellison. Lord of the Rings.

Showcased Author- 2.) Gboyega Ogundele

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a lawyer and writer, I have written over 4 books. Some of my books have been translated, whilst some have enjoyed best selling status. I write both Fiction and non fictions.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled Case Over. I was inspired by the way the average person in the society lives. The ups and downs, the need to take up responsibilities and fight for one’s rights at critical times. Further, the government attitude to these prevailing issues.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No I do not.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
John Grisham’s Books. Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie, Wole Soyinka.

What are you working on now?
The title of my upcoming work is “A time as this”

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. New author’s should be persistent and go after their goals.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Always be truthful

What are you reading now?
The Rules of Wealth by Richard Templar

What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to start receiving much recognitions for my works.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Holy Bible, Things fall apart.

Showcased Author- 3.) Sandra Bass Joines

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Some say I’m a storyteller, scene weaver, truth stretcher. I say I’m a wife, mother, grandmother, friend. Storyteller. Lover of beaches and dancing souls. I tell stories of wounded women in seemingly hopeless situations. Stories that sometimes frighten me to tell. I believe all women are remarkable and strong. Warriors who find the courage to escape. To take back their lives. When the time is right. When they can.

I’ve written four books, three fiction and one non-fiction. My protagonists are strong women, sometimes they don’t know it yet, who face controlling mothers or spouses with mental or physical abuse issues, substance addiction, or sex addiction. My books explore family secrets, sometimes dark, which not only affect the lives of the secret keeper but also their succeeding generations of daughters and granddaughters.

I grew up along the Forgotten Coast of Florida. That’s most likely why my books are set in small towns in that intriguing area. Although my stories address series issues, my Southern humor pops up quite often.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Bed, Breakfast & Bedbugs.” I can’t tell you what actually inspired it. Typically some crazy book title flashes through my mind, and I write a story about it. I think that’s how this book came about. The story changed several times during the writing process. I thought of a quaint bed and breakfast and the crazy people who were permanent residents—each one with a unique quirk. In this book, one has Alzheimer’s and drifts in and out of reality. One is a retired preacher who misquotes Bible verses. A third is a young artist with absence seizures who freezes into a statue without warning. Each character helps the protagonist’s journey. (There are none of those nasty little bed bugs that bite in this story)

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think I have any unusual writing habits. I prefer to write in my office, sometimes with music—depending on the scene I’m writing. It’s often difficult to sit for long due to back issues. My husband gave me a wonderful Christmas present, however, and the recliner allows me to write for much longer periods. We set it up in my office, and I would be lost without it.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I probably should refer to one of the great classic authors like Virginia Woolfe or William Faulkner, both I love, but one author who has influenced me significantly is Jean M. Auel, author of the Earth Children’s series (Clan of the Cave Bear) set in prehistoric Europe. It’s not that I love reading about the interactions of the Cro-magnon people with the Neanderthals. It’s her incredible command of storytelling, her dedication to researching, and her ability to write that had a great impact on me and definitely encouraged me to be an author.

Three of my favorite authors who inspire me are Kristin Hannah, Diane Chamberlain, and Elin Hilderbrand.

What are you working on now?
Currently I’m working on “The Blossom Inlet Series.” The series simply happened. I was writing a standalone, “Bed, Breakfast & Bedbugs,” when I realized each character had his or her own dark secret, so why not tell those stories. Ivy Jane was the first Lady Van Leer, who came to America in 1908 and the one who built the Blossom Inlet estate. I’m offering a free novella, written in journal style, about her struggles and how she felt her actions caused Blossom Inlet to be cursed. “Ivy Jane’s Journal: The Beginning of Blossom Inlet.” I have four other books in the series in different stages from first draft to editing stages. These characters live in my mind, and I can’t wait to get their stories on paper.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There are so many wonderful promotion sites—like Awesome Gang. Some are free and many have reasonable costs. I think it takes a lot of research to determine the best places to promote our genre. Landing a BookBub spot is one of the best for actual book purchases. It’s all about finding what fits our book and being consistent and persistent in promoting.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Getting the story from your head to your computer or paper. Without the words, you’ll never have a published book. Learning the craft. There are a great number of informative workshops and classes to help you develop your skills. With the proper understanding of how to write, those words you typed into your computer will come to life. Not allowing that nasty imposter syndrome to control you. Instead, tell yourself you are not a fraud. You have talent. You have skills. You can write an amazing book. Not one successful author achieved success without putting words on a page. Most all successful authors will tell you they have, at one time or another, experienced the effects of imposter syndrome. Be consistent. Form a habit to write every day. Lastly, avoid comparing yourself to other writers.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just write.

What are you reading now?
“The Last House on the Street” by Diane Chamberlain. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Highly recommend it.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Getting this “The Blossom Inlet Series” completed and moving on to writing other books.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I don’t know about what books I would take with me, but I surely hope one would be a book about how to survive being stranded on a desert island.

Advice: Meaning Of ‘Don’t Bite The Hand That Feeds’

Hello Everyone!

How is your Wednesday going, peeps!? Despite the snow/sleet mess that’s going on today, I’m grateful that it’s another quiet on my jobsite today. Please don’t forget to connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you another piece of Quora advice that I found to be both amusing and rather interesting. This subject is on the metaphor known as, “don’t bite the hand that feeds” you. Have you ever heard this phrase being uttered before? I know I have heard it quite a few times in my life. The person usually saying the phrase is warning me to not be foolish and instead be more strategic with my move. I very much believe in being strategic and not do anything to harm myself. Another term to use is, “don’t burn your bridges”. The idea is that once you burn the bridge, you can’t cross back to get to the the other side as easily as when the bridge was still in place. While I know most Americans are very familiar with this phrase, I would hate to assume that all of the people in the world also know of these phrases. I’d love to hear a similar phrase that is used in your country to convey the same message. Let me know your society’s saying down the comment section below. If you disagree with my interpretation, let me know how you would interpret it? I would be very interested in your take if it is the total opposite of mine. Please read the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What is the meaning of the phrase “don’t bite the hand that feeds”?”

By Rose Anne Campbell

MY RESPONSE:

“Let’s look at the origin of this phrase. This phrase, known as an idiom, was used as early as 600 BC as by the Greek poet Sappho. Its earliest known recorded use in English is 1711 by writer Joseph Addison. The expression draws on the metaphor of a dog biting its master from Aesop’s Fables. If a dog bites it’s master, the dog runs the possibility of being kicked out to the streets. The dog runs the risk of being forced to find it’s own resources. This becomes a hardship if resources are scarce or even nonexistent. This is why it’s wise and rather strategic for a dog to not bite the master’s hand. Life is about going the distance and being strategic with how you navigate through life with the least amounts of hardships as possible. Doing things intentionally that hurt your resources is rather foolish. This is my interpretation of the phrase. I wish you much success and luck with your life path. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

You are very much appreciated for hooking me up with a slice of your time to read my blog post today. Let me know your thoughts on my position? How do you handle folks that bite off the hands that feed them? I’m interested in hearing some foolishly wild stories on this topic. Now, you are aware by now that I’m not professing to have the best answer. I’m only offering a viewpoint that may not have been previously considered. Let me know your take down in the comment section below since other opinions are encouraged and embraced here on my website/blog. Sharing Free/Paid Book Promotion Websites!

Hello Everyone!

I hope you have had a smooth morning and an amazing Wednesday afternoon. Stay warm and dry as we finish this winter together. Do you happen to be a budding author who just launched your book/podcast!? Do you know of someone who could use the free/paid links down below?? By all means, share them with anyone who could use them. I have an abundance mindset and believe in the power of sharing knowledge. As you know, I share author articles from my Awesome Gang email blasts here on my blog. Let me know if you have discovered a new author during this “Showcased Author Series”? My objective is to pick out different authors that offer a variety of media content. For the record, I know nothing about the author other than what is showcased in the author article that was shared, via Awesome Gang. For now, I’m attempting to connect with the authors in an effort to build my author network. I’ve even submitted #ConstructionTales to Awesome Gang, Book Reader Magazine, and Pretty Hot most recently. When I’m ready to release my children’s book entitled, Not All Girls Play With Dolls on Amazon, I shall submit again at that time. My first children’s book #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls is to empower young kids to pursue their passions even if it is not normally the tradition in their society. The purpose of this blog post is to share some links to websites that are offering either free or paid book promotions. It’s up to you if you feel like there is value with these types of book promotions. As indie authors, we have to navigate through a sea of content in order to get our books seen with the right target market. That is a challenge since book promotions can be very expensive! If you have some free book promotion that I don’t have listed down below, by all means drop the links in the comment section below and I will edit this post and give your website credit. If you got ripped off while promoting a book, let us know down in the comment section below as well. I want to warn others about the scammers. Go ahead and check out the list of websites below:

Vol. #32: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

I wish you an amazingly smooth Wednesday this morning. It is currently raining with a dash of snow here on the streets of New York City. I’m even submitted #ConstructionTales to both Awesome Gang and Book Reader Magazine recently. When I’m ready to release my children’s book Not All Girls Play With Dolls on Amazon, I shall submit again at that time. My first children’s book #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls is to empower young kids to pursue their passions even if it is not normally the tradition in their society. Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. For now, here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) David Kern

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my first book outside of publishing articles in technical journals. I am a graduate of the US Air Force Test Pilot School and the US Air Force Academy, and have been an experimental test pilot since 2008. I am an Associate Fellow with the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and Member of the Society of Flight Test Engineers. In 2011, I was the USAF F-16 project test pilot for the Collier Trophy-winning Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS). In my personal life, I am a devoted husband, proud father of two awesome kids, and when not flying all kinds of aircraft I enjoy woodworking, camping, hiking, skiing, cooking and music. My previous publications include “Flight Test Techniques for Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar”, and “Accelerated Development of Flight Tested Sensors and Systems”.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Introduction to Fly-by-Wire Flight Control Systems: The professional pilot’s guide to understanding modern aircraft controls”. I wrote this book after receiving an unexpected phone call from a fellow pilot I met at a G650 recurrent training. He’s leading a Part 91 flight department, and wanted to dig a little deeper into fly-by-wire concepts with his other pilots, as a professional development study topic. He knew that I am a test pilot, and asked me if there were any resources beyond the flight manual that might explain a little more of the “how” and “why” of fly-by-wire, beyond normal and non-normal procedures. I thought I could easily dig up and send him additional resources — deeper than the flight manual, but less than an aeronautical engineering PhD dissertation. I found that there is quite an information gap between these two extremes, and ended up writing this book in the process of answering his questions. I promise there is no math, it’s written for pilots!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure what usual writing habits would be for comparison’s sake?

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tony Kern. Although we share the same last name, we are not related to my knowledge. His books on safety and professionalism in aviation are unmatched.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a series of training courses related to aerospace product development, flight test, and risk management topics. I plan to release them for on-demand remote learning.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think having my own website to give more background to my book is useful.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Go for it! It’s exciting to release a book and get feedback from readers.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do for others as you would have them do for you.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading a lot of diverse material regarding autonomy and artificial intelligence. This is a rapidly-developing area of research.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’d like to write about my experience developing the F-16 Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System. This is such a revolutionary integration of autonomy with human control, and it’s been highly successful in terms of lives saved.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First of all, I’d want a book on how to build a life raft, plus a celestial navigation reference. Also my Bible, since I wouldn’t really be alone!

Showcased Author- 2.) Chrisna Kruger

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a South African female of 48-years old. I grew up in a time when everything explicit was highly censored and love was still sweet and dreamy – I prefer it that way. I have always dreamed of writing but always lacked the courage (I became a nurse, it was the “sensible” thing to do). Now I am taking that leap, at last, for the first time!
The old classic romances still make us all believe in, or at least dream of, true everlasting love. I hope to write classic romance novels for the 21st century. I prefer plot-driven novels. And what is a romance novel without an element of magic to it or if it can’t take one to another world or time, whether real or imaginary?

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Beautiful Beloved
I love the old classic love stories, but it seems these days we are bombarded by all things explicit. I decided to try and write a modern day “Pride and Prejudice” – we’ll see what people think of my first attempt…

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Classic writers, and I love the 1400’s – 1900’s – the dresses, the evening balls, the horse carriages and the male chivalry – the romance and courting.

What are you working on now?
Book 2 – I am writing the next book in the Howard Saga.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning the ins and outs. I am quite an introvert and not that clued up or fluent with social media. Any advice or help will go a loooong way!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Trust your gut. I’m doing it here.

What are you reading now?
British and WW2 history – research for my saga

What’s next for you as a writer?
A HUGE publishing contract and TV series, which will allow me to write on a fulltime basis.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Pride and Prejudice
Wuthering heights
A Grimm Brothers compilation
A Francine Rivers omnibus

Showcased Author- 3.) Kurtis Ebeling

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Anaheim, California, but have lived in Spokane, Washington for most of my adult life. I have only published one collection thus far, but I am currently working on the next one.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Beneath Stretching Pines, which is a short collection of 30 poems. It was greatly inspired by my studies of modernist poets at Eastern Washington University—Williams Carlos Williams and William Butler Yeats in particular.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, I don’t think so. I like to go on walks around a local park that often serves as the initial inspiration for my poetry. Otherwise, my poems usually emerge slowly while I sit at the computer to type—sometimes they take weeks and other times they take minutes.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Spring and All and Paterson by William Carlos Williams are probably my biggest influences. However, I am also deeply influenced by translations of classical Chinese (Li Pai, Tu Fu, Wang Wei, etc.) and Japanese (Basho, Issa, Santōka, etc.) poets, and I really enjoy the works of many well known western poets—Yeats, Keats, Donne, Hilda Doolittle, etc.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a second collection of poems that doesn’t quite have a name yet.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still figuring this out. Thus far, I have only really used social media (twitter and instagram) to promote my book.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’d recommend spending as much time, prior to publication, planning out how you are going to market your work (especially if you’re self-publishing). Unfortunately, marketing is somewhat of a necessary step I hadn’t considered prior to publication. In the end, creating good art should be enough, but getting it out there isn’t always an easy feat.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I don’t know any published authors, so I haven’t heard much. But, I will say that patience is a virtue in this field (as far as I can tell). For me, I felt that I needed to be free of the work that composed Beneath Stretching Pines, and thus, I was eager to self-publish without much thought to anything outside of its composition.

What are you reading now?
Charles Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I just plan to keep on writing until I have enough poems for another book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

  1. Moby-Dick by Herman Melville (my favorite piece of fiction)
  2. Spring and All by William Carlos Williams
  3. The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima
  4. The Collected Poems of W.B. Yeats

Vol. #31: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

I wish you an amazingly smooth Wednesday this morning. It is currently raining with a dash of snow here on the streets of New York City.

Showcased Author- 1.) Gareth Williams

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a retired school teacher who studied history at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge. I also have a doctorate from Cardiff University. I live on the Isle of Skye with my wife Helen and our Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Sophie. I am climbing all the Scottish peaks over 3000 feet and love all kinds of skiing.
I have written more books than I like to admit but most of them remain where they belong, hidden in a cupboard! However, I have completed three instalments of The Richard Davey Chronicles and am close to the end of a stand alone fictional biography set in the late eighteenth century.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Serving Shaka. The clue is in the title. The book is inspired by the life of Shaka Zulu, founder of the Zulu nation. I have been fascinated by his life ever since I read a biography of his life by E.A. Ritter in the early 1970s. He rose, despite the odds, to forge an empire that threatened British dominance of southern Africa.
Two coincidences also drew me to his story. Firstly, he was rising to power just as Napoleon Bonaparte was dying on St Helena. But in my book, Needing Napoleon, the former emperor escapes! Secondly, although it has yet to feature in one of my books, a direct descendant of Napoleon died fighting for the British against the Zulus in 1879.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually play rock music while I work. People think it must be distracting but I never really hear it, it just protects me from the silence!
I also enjoy editing my first draft more than the initial writing process!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
As a write of historical fiction I must credit Bernard Cornwell, particularly his Sharpe series, and Conn Iggulden’s Emperor series. As Needing Napoleon has a time travel element, I must also acknowledge Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series.
As an aspiring fantasy writer, I am a big fan of almost anything by Raymond E Feist. I was captivated by Stephen Donaldson’s The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever, particularly the first three books.
Finally, I must admit to a penchant for science fiction, where Isaac Asimov and Iain M Banks are my favourites.

What are you working on now?
I am editing the third instalment of The Richard Davey Chronicles, which has yet to be named. I am currently writing a fictionalised biography of a real individual who led a controversial life straddling cultures and continents between 1763 and 1805.
The book deals with issues of cultural appropriation, racism and the challenges of confronting the past from a twenty-first-century perspective.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Nothing beats meeting people in person whether speaking at a school or visiting a book club. Thanks to technology, some of this can be achieved virtually when geography gets in the way!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Despite the temptation to launch in full of enthusiasm (doubtless driven by a shortage of time), plan first. I spent years rushing new ideas onto the page and inevitably, within a hundred pages, I had tied myself in knots. In contrast, my first published novel, Needing Napoleon, only took three months to write, with barely a misstep, thanks to a similar length of time planning and plotting, developing characters and considering their interplay.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you write in the evening, edit in the morning,

What are you reading now?
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am planning the fourth instalment of The Richard Davey Chronicles and a fantasy novel, tentatively entitled The Mountain Kingdom, partly inspired by my home on the Isle of Skye.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Collected Works by William Shakespeare (my grandmother’s leather-bound copy won as a school prize in 1911)
Collected Poems by Clive James (no apologies, he is my favourite poet)
The Old Man and the Sea by John Steinbeck (to remind me how simple words can convey powerful stories)
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien (the paperback compendium first published in 1968 which I read under the covers as a child)

Showcased Author- 2.) Courtney Lillard

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am originally from Wisconsin, but traveled around the Midwest with my husband for school and am currently in Nebraska. I earned both my B.A. and M.A. in Communication Studies and began writing shortly after. The Dark Angel series is my first adventure as an author. I currently have three books published, Book One: The Shadow’s Grasp, Book Two: The Guardian’s Deception, and Book Three: The Puppet’s Blight, which released this month.

I am currently writing the sixth book of this series and plan to publish them all over the next two years.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
On February 22nd, I published The Puppet’s Blight. It is the continuation of The Dark Angel series and follows a mage as she loses her magic and follows a demon and its creatures around the country to get it back.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I prefer to write in the mornings when I wake up since that is usually when I’m more active. Other than that, I can sit down and write for hours straight when the story is figured out. In order to make that happen, I spend time listening to certain music that sets the tone for that point in the story. That’s usually how I come up with specific plot points or action scenes.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Mercedes Lackey’s Heralds of Valdemar series is probably my favorite when it comes to fantasy because it was my first encounter with the genre. I also enjoy classics like Jurassic Park and A Tale of Two Cities.

I find a lot of inspiration outside of books as well, including in fantasy and action/adventure movies and JRPG video games, such as the Final Fantasy series.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I am at the beginning of the sixth book in The Dark Angel series. There may or may not end up being a seventh, but once this is complete I would like to start on something new that I’ve had in mind to write for a while. I’m also learning how to get online ads and market myself as an author since nowadays that’s what you sort of have to do.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This year, I began a newsletter with updates, behind the scenes information, and featured authors. You can sign up at lillardbooks.com and get access to a free short story. I also created a brand logo to use so my social media and website are consistent.
I believe the best way to market yourself is by continuing to write and publish. One or two books from an author doesn’t spark up much traction, so it’s important to establish yourself through a website and social media, continue to write and publish, and then focus on paid ads, bloggers, events, etc.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write for yourself, first and foremost. In any art form, there will be people who don’t like or don’t understand your work. That’s okay! If everybody liked everything, there wouldn’t be any variety. Because of this, it’s important for authors to know who they are and what they want to create. You’re not going to please anybody and you only have control over yourself. Write the story that you want to write above all else instead of caving into what’s popular, what gets readers, and what pleases the majority of people.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Motivation is sparked by action. If you want to write, write. Once you get started, you’ll find it easier to continue than if you remain lying down wondering how productive you could be later.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My favorite book is Jurassic Park, followed by A Tale of Two Cities, then Magic’s Pawn by Mercedes Lackey. It’s a weird trio, but I have fond memories associated with each.

Showcased Author- 3.) Evan Camby

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a horror-obsessed Midwestern wife & mother who writes scary stories and atmospheric suspense/mysteries. I’ve loved Halloween and the horror genre since I was a little girl, and I grew up watching British mystery shows. I wrote short stories as a kid but fell away from it as I got into my teens. After starting a career as a lawyer, I realized I missed it and got back into writing in my mid-twenties. Since then, I’ve written and published 5 books, and I won an award for my debut book in 2014.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Hollow Spring: A Detective Cal Brennan Novel” was inspired by my fascination with cold cases and dark, atmospheric mystery/suspense series. There are a handful of cold cases I follow closely that provided inspiration, but not in the way you’d probably think. What I most wanted to write about was how the family members of the victims manage to get on with their lives without ever getting any answers. Of course, the details of the crime are important but the human cost is what most interests me.

The setting is small-town Indiana, something I know well from my work as a “country lawyer.” The protagonist is a detective whose family member was a victim of a cold crime in the eighties. Now an adult still haunted by those events, his life’s work is to solve crimes before they become cold cases, to prevent anyone from suffering the way he and his family did. This will be a series with at least four books in it, and I hope to have even more.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write during my toddler’s nap time, usually with a cup of microwaved coffee by my side and some kind of “ambient cafe music” playing on Youtube. I try to cram in as much as I can during that two-hour window. I prefer to be facing a window, as our lot is wooded and the woods have always inspired me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My first writing influence was Edgar Allan Poe. My mom got me an antique book of his stories, and I was hooked. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve also come to love Shirley Jackson, Washington Irving, Susan Hill, Edgar Lee Masters, Ernest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson, and Vladimir Nabokov. Poe and Jackson are my horror idols, and Susan Hill is my mystery idol. I’d love to have a career like Hill, as she writes both horror and mysteries. My dialogue idol is Hemingway. He really understood how people talk to each other.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the third installment in my “Walking After Midnight: Tales for Halloween” series. Ten more tales of horror and suspense, set on or around Halloween. Perfect to get in the spirit of the holiday, or any time you need a creepy fix.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love the members of my newsletter/mailing list. They are my biggest fans and their word-of-mouth promotions are most effective. I truly appreciate them! I also love Instagram, I’m a visual person and it is the most fun for me.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid to write badly in the beginning. You have to be bad before you can be good. Just get the words on the page!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“This too shall pass.”–originally from the Bible but my Grandma said it a lot.

Also: “Write hard and clear about what hurts.” –Ernest Hemingway

What are you reading now?
“The Woman in White” by Wilkie Collins.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Becoming a mother in 2021 really gave me the focus and confidence to start promoting myself more. I am building my platform and working on new books as well as fun content for my Patreon audience.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
So hard to choose!

“Lolita,” “The Exorcist,” the Bible, and (this is cheating a bit) but my compendium of Edgar Allan Poe works. (If I could take a 5th, and I WOULD find a way, I’d sneak in “The Haunting of Hill House.” ….Also, my Hemingway collection. Sorry! No way I could only choose 3 or 4.)

Vol. #30: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Hopefully, your Monday is going as smooth as silk for you so far this afternoon. Did you have any epic weekend plans? I did end up spending time with a good friend who I caught up with while having dinner this past weekend. My Saturday dinner plans cancelled at the last minute and they need to be re-scheduled. Therefore, I opted to peep The Back Room speakeasy as well as American Whiskey near Penn Station. I learned that during Prohibition, the patrons drank out of coffee cups just in case the place got raided by the police. The Back Room is an original speakeasy that is still in operation and they serve booze in coffee cups. For anyone who has not caught my other posts, the U.S.A. enduring a period of time in history where the sale and consumption of alcohol was banned. I have a fascination with checking out bars, known as a speakeasy, from the Prohibition era. This period of time lasted between 1920-1933. The Italian Mob and the Kennedy family sure made their money during the Prohibition era. As I have said just a few times before, I thank you for checking out my 16-year-old son John’s “Call To Action Marketing” business (hashtag #CTAMarketing). This post is intended to share even more work of some independent authors, such as myself, and earn some good karma in the process. Showcased Author- 1.) George Plumley

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up in a certain small town in Pennsylvania famous for mushrooms. I’ve always been a fan of stories be they from books, tv, or how my family members used to spend their time getting into trouble. I’ve written one book, Forged Destiny: From the Ashes, the first in a trilogy I’ve been working on since college.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest and first book is Forged Destiny: From the Ashes. I started getting inspiration for character tropes at random through my junior year of college. The first character I remember thinking of was Phoebe, a mage who could use healing magic but only once or twice a day. Eventually, my pool of characters grew to the point where I began thinking, “Well, how would they interact in this situation?” and from that point, I had a plot for a series.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I opened a document on my laptop, wrote down the overarching plot for a chapter in a few sentences, then wrote down up to ten bullet points of what I wanted to do for that chapter. Sometimes I wouldn’t get the most out of everything or I had to spill some points over into the following chapters, but I felt like it kept me on pace with everything and let me keep up with the plot I had in mind in a very simple fashion.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite book series is Croak by Gina Damico. It’s about an outcast girl who goes on to become a grim reaper. It’s funny where it needs to be, it’s plot-driven where it needs to be, and it’s overall very well-paced and kept me interested the entire time.

What are you working on now?
I’m finishing up work on the second installment in the Forged Destiny series. I’ve just recently gone over From The Ashes and reread my final draft a second time to make sure I was happy with it. It should be out soon!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Honestly, I’m terrible at promoting books! It’s my weakness! I do have a Facebook page (@WritermanPlumley) where I have links, but that’s about it! I’m hoping to get my books in the hands of as many as possible, so who knows what the future holds?

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make sure you’re having fun writing it! What’s the point of writing if it isn’t something you yourself wouldn’t enjoy? I can look at my book, smile, and be happy with what I did. I’m honestly STILL in shock that I managed to self-publish a book. If you’re still not sure, get somebody you trust (shoutout to you, mom) to go over your book and point things out. It’s fine to be your own biggest critic!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Do the best you can whenever you can.”

What are you reading now?
I have the pleasure of reading the Bakemonogatari light novel series by Nisioisin currently. It’s a series of stories about different monsters and their effect on the characters introduced in them. I’m on the second book now, I’m loving it!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on publishing the second installment of Forged Destiny now so I can start on the final installment. I’ve got the basics down of what I want to do but not my patented bullet list strategy, so it might be a while longer before it’s completed. I’m already getting ideas for another book, so I have no intentions of slowing down!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d definitely take Croak by Gina Damico, Bakemonogatari 1 by Nisioisin, and this one book my mom found she made in elementary school on printer paper, because it would make me laugh.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Saskatchewan, lived and worked in northern Manitoba, Alberta, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
I’ve been writing since I was in my teens. My favourite genres are Mystery, Urban Fantasy, and Romantic Suspense, each with a bit of humour.
March 6, 2022, my tenth novel will be released.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Condo Crazy is the third book in the cozy Musgrave Landing Mysteries series. This work inspired by my sister and the crazy things that happened in her condo building. She was great about letting me weave her adventures into a story. I like to add humour to my stories and Condo Crazy has some funny things happen along with a few mysteries to solve.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know about unusual, to me they seem normal. I scuba dive and sail with my husband. I’m also the videographer on his Pallet Cabin YouTube channel. We own a parcel of land and my husband always wanted to build a cabin from scratch, so here we are.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tanya Huff and her many, many books. She too writes several genres, all have mystery of a type to solve like mine. Ann Cleeves and her Vera series influenced my other mystery series, The Adam Norcross Mysteries. Linwood Barclay, his dry wit. Harlen Coben too, there are so many.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m working on the next Adam Norcross mystery, The Right Road, the follow up to The Wrong Words from 2021. While the previous on was set on Vancouver Island, this one will contain more travel, Afghanistan to Canadian Prairies.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
You can find all my news and the books here: https://blackyvy50.wixsite.com/yvonnerediger

There is no link as yet for Condo Crazy, it’s coming soon!
http://bookswelove.net/rediger-yvonne/

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read writing craft books. If you have a favourite author and he or she has written a ‘how I write’ book, read it. Check you local library for books as well. Also, don’t think you have to have your whole story figured out before you start typing, you don’t. Begin, that is the first step. Write the scenes that keep you up at night first. Later you can daisy-chain them together and reorganize them.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just write it down. You can’t edit a blank page.

What are you reading now?
Terry Pratchett’s Jingo. I love Sir Sameul Vimes and the Watch in Discworld. Sir Terry knew how to write humour along with big social issues.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I have The Right Road completed and submitted to my publisher. It will be on to book 4, as yet untitled, of the Musgrave Landing Mysteries. I think a mystery weekend theme may be in store for Gladys and Arlington.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Lois McMaster Bujold’s Shards of Honour Omnibus. Tanya Huff’s Blood Series Omnibus. Ann Cleeves’ latest Vera novel and the bible.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a solo slow traveler since retiring from my professional life in 2014. From Fall 2014 to Summer 2017 I travelled to every country in Central and South America except one. I worked out the kinks in my approach to solo travel during this time. In Fall 2017 until the start of the pandemic I traveled to all the regions of Africa.
During this period l have written two books on my travels in Wedt Africa with more books to follow.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My last book, A New Day Dawns, shares my travels in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Ghana. I wrote this book to help people in the West to look at these parts from another perspective beyond that given by the mainstream media. To date l think l have succeeded with my intent.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My writing is done in two stages. Having experienced the day of travel, l post to my personal fb page for family and friends. When l am ready to write the book l confirm the accuracy of what I am attesting to and do further research before writing the story.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have from boyhood enjoyed the classic work of Mark Twain. In more recent times it has been the work of writers such as Paul Theroux who have influenced my approach to my writing.

What are you working on now?
Currently l am focussed on marketing my books for the next two months then l will start the third book in my series . The next book will focus on Gabon, Cameroon and Namibia. These are very interesting countries that do not get the attention that the leading East African countries do so there is a story to be told.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have promoted my books by Amazon adverts and selected promotion sites.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I think authors should be veryclear of why they are writing and how they will measure success. Once this is worked out their activities can be geared up to achieve those goals. One should not write just to write as upon completion there is no clarity in promoting the work, etc.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write another book! When given this advice l did not understand it. Now l fully understand and would give the same advice in short form and then explain what it really means and how it plays out.

What are you reading now?
Presently I am in several fb groups with book trains. I am doing this is increase the reviews my books have some I read what’s up for reading when l go to the trains. So very random and not any particular genre.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would like to have my books become popular …not to make lots of money but to have my readers have a broader view of the countries l write about. So my success will not be measured in book sales but it the response that books create measured by reviews and articles about the books.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
One travel book, one mystery book and one historical book. These are where my interests lie.

Advice: What Is Wrong With Being Woke??

Hello Everyone!

How is your Monday going, my friend? Yes, it’s painful to be back in the work week grind on a Monday. I’m grateful that it’s another quiet on my jobsite today. As I keep asking in each of my posts, please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you another piece of Quora advice that I found to be interesting. Tackling the topic of “being woke” sometimes feels like you may step on an angry hornet’s nest. I’m aware that words being said today tend to deeply impact others in a more intense way than in the past. I try to take that into consideration when I’m speaking. I may not be successful at it but I do try at least. The leaders of the past were far less sensitive than today. Back in the 1980’s and 1990’s, you would not have survived if you were very sensitive. Reality back then was rather harsh compared to today. I can only imagine the climate of the 70’s and earlier! Woof!! I see the value of the woke generation and I also see where they are a thorn in my side. I have been able to witness a shift in society that has become softer than in the past. You are still going to run into extremely insensitive folks that are hidden or out in the front of society. I think that is a matter of perception. I perceive myself as more sensitive and open minded compared to my fellow construction industry peers. Meanwhile, an even more sensitive person may perceive my rugged construction worker edges as insensitive and abrasive. I would take that data in stride if offered. I’m quite sure that my construction chick viewpoints are not dainty at all. What is your perception of woke people? Are they good or bad in your opinion? Can you see the value despite being rather annoyed with the “in your face” approach? Are you afraid to speak up on them for fear of retribution? I considered that for a second before proceeding with tackling the question. I try to not allow fear to control many of my decisions. However, I do allow fear to keep me from doing extreme stuff like scuba diving, bungee jumping, and sky diving. The thought of swimming amongst sharks scares the crap out of me so I avoid it. I’ve done a few snorkeling trips and felt the fear creep up on me during the moment. One thing I wonder about woke people is if they often work within an echo chamber of like minded folks or do they actually challenge their thinking by immersing themselves with opposing views? I believe that opposing views can help yourself to become more knowledgeable on your approach to a topic. You can gain more of an understanding as to why you feel the way that you do. You may soften up your hardened approach by hearing out the other side (if they are logical and not combative). If you disagree with my input, let me know exactly how you came to that conclusion? I would be very interested in your take if it is the total opposite of mine. To gain more clarity on my view, read the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What is wrong with being “woke”?”

By Graham C Lindsay

MY RESPONSE:

“I actually think woke people serve a purpose in society. They even out the population of insensitive folks who rest on the other side of the coin. These people are actually standing up for social injustice regardless of whether or not they are actually impacted. Their method of revealing their thoughts is much better than folks in the past who opted to not speak up and let the dominant way of thinking to prevail. We all have a voice and a different way of viewing life. The downside to woke people is that I more than likely feel like I have to watch what I say and walk on eggshells when in their presence. It can sometimes feel like woke people are just looking for attention and looking to make mountains out of mole hills. That feature can be annoying. One must ask why do woke people expend so much energy on causes that don’t even impact them in the first place? It feels like the people who are impacted should be the folks to voice their displeasure at a particular cause. I would feel awkward being mad and extremely vocal about something that doesn’t even impact me. I wonder if the people, who are actually in the midst of the social cause, feel gratitude for the voices of these woke folks? With the invention of social media, opinions are very easy to be shared on the different platforms. How many voices are genuine anger and how many are just for social media clout? The woke people even make their presence known during a stand-up comedian’s monologue. One has to ask as to where is the platform where people can be free to speak their minds without someone feeling offended? In the past, a comedy skit was considered the judgement free zone. It’s an escape from reality since laughter is the best medicine. I find the woke people who interrupt a comedian to tell them that they are out of line to be annoying. It’s a comedy bit! Chances are high, someone is going to be offended. If you are very sensitive, then avoid going to comedy clubs. Speaking your truth is a challenge during modern times. We were told as kids to always tell the truth. The truth is bound to hurt someone’s feelings. There is nothing wrong with blocking or avoiding content that you do not agree with. I don’t think it’s fair to try to cancel a person who doesn’t share your view points. People like to censure people all of the way until it impacts their own words. By that point, it will be too late. Censuring others can and will bite you in a way previously not considered in the future. I’d rather know a person’s position versus being in the dark about it. There is value in full disclosure. I appreciate anything that provides balance in life. If I don’t like something, I will just avoid it. I don’t think I need to stress and put my health on edge for the sake of a social cause. That is just me. I’m aware that shouting on my soap box will only raise my blood pressure and not change society much. However, the woke crowd has shifted society to more tolerable levels, via finding a middle ground. The woke people work to shift society since there is strength in numbers. I know that life is better now than in the past. I’m sure that the woke force has had an impact on society. Much of the nonsense in the work force that happened years ago would not fly as well today. For every annoying feature, there are some benefits to the woke movement. I wish you much luck with finding some common ground! #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

You are appreciated for hooking me up with a slice of your time to read my blog post today. Let me know your thoughts on my position? Yes, I know that I tackled another sensitive subject today. I need to find some comedy to balance out my content. What’s your take on the woke people of society? How do you handle folks that oppose your view? I’m interested in reading views that are the polar opposite of mine. Now, you are aware by now that I’m not professing to have the best answer.
