Advice: Meaning Behind “You Have A Good Face”?

Hello Everyone!

How was your weekend, my friend? Did you have any fun plans? My fellow electrician friend canceled on our Saturday evening dinner plans. I opted to not be disappointed with the last minute cancellation. I proceeded to go out solo to another speakeasy pub in lower Manhattan called The Back Room. I learned that they served drinks in coffee cups during the Prohibition era. Because of this fact, they still serve drinks in these cups. You had to walk past this gate and down a set of stairs and up another set of stairs. It was very much a low key spot that was from that era when booze was banned here in the U.S. from 1920-1933. I can’t believe that this country had an era when alcohol was banned!! On the way home, I stopped at American Whiskey for a cocktail before going home. I tried Basil Hayden for the first time. It needed to be cold since it was tough to drink at at room temperature. Now, it’s back to the work week and Monday. Thankfully, it’s quiet on my jobsite today. As I keep asking in each of my posts, please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you a piece of Quora advice that I found to be amusing. It made me laugh so I felt compelled to respond. This topic is on someone telling another person that “you have a good face”. I find comments like this to be highly immature and rather cruel. However, the person may be trying to save a bad situation by saying that the person has a nice face. I grew up with an evil step-mother who used to often say the cruelest things to me. One of her things was to constantly speak about what she didn’t like about my body style. When I look back on my pictures as a young teen, I didn’t look as bad as she claimed. It’s a shame since it impacted me mentally as a teen and caused me to withdraw and not desire to socialize with my peers. It was good because feeling bad about myself helped me to avoid a teen pregnancy. However, it was bad since it impacted me well into my 20’s. As a woman in my 40’s, I have a much better version of self-esteem. As a girl with a muscular build, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I now have a “take it or leave it” vibe when it comes to interacting with the opposite sex. Thankfully, none of it kept me out of the relationship realm. I did get married when I was 18-years old and well out of high school and into the military. When I think back, if I didn’t have those emotions hanging over my head, would I have still got married young? Any time parents are cruel to a teen, it will push that kid towards the first person who gives you love and attention. Then again, it was a highly energetic and intense connection so I’m sure it was going to happen regardless of my background. Because of that bad teen experience, I never feel a need to body shame anyone ever. If I ever hear anyone body shame my sons, that would fuel my rage. There is absolutely no reason to pollute a young person’s mind like that. There is nothing good that comes from badgering a person over their body. I’m aware that some people confuse criticism with motivation. I find it highly unnecessary and it makes the commenter look like a straight asshole! Does the commenter think for a minute that the person being criticized has the body of a goddess when they really don’t?? It’s quite arrogant to think that a person’s unsolicited opinion is the gold standard for all walks of life. I’m pretty sure that the average person with an undesirable body is quite aware of that fact. Highlighting it just works to mentally torment even further an already tortured soul. Know that words impact others deeper than you realize. If you disagree with my input, let me know exactly how you came to that conclusion? I would be very interested in your take if it is the total opposite of mine. To gain more clarity on my view, read the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“He said “you have a good face.” What does that mean?”

By Kawthar Mejjaoui

MY RESPONSE:

“Hahaha!! That saying can mean a polite way to say that you have a beautiful face but your body doesn’t match the face. Meaning that the person’s body can be very large, deformed, short, scarred, etc. This person could be trying to come up with a compliment to save themselves from a bad slip up of the tongue. It can also be said to someone as a cruel joke. Meanwhile, there is nothing wrong with their body. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What one person praises as the best looking on the planet, another person could walk by and hardly notice the person being praised. I wish you luck on that one! 😛 #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

Thanks for hooking me up with a slice of your time to read my blog post today. Let me know your thoughts on my position? Yes, I know that this is a sensitive subject for many. There are many who do not understand the struggle of this subject matter. This is one of those topics that I’m aware that I tackled it with more emotion than logic. If you have faced criticism on your body, how do you face it? I’m interested in reading views that are the polar opposite of mine. Now, you are aware by now that I’m not professing to have the best answer. I’m only offering a viewpoint that may not have been previously considered. Let me know your take down in the comment section below since other opinions are encouraged and embraced here on my website/blog. I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.

Vol. #29: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Is your Friday flowing well for you so far this afternoon? Do you have any plans for the weekend? I plan on spending time with friends having dinner this weekend. As I have said quite a few times before, I thank you for checking out my 16-year-old son John’s “Call To Action Marketing” business (hashtag #CTAMarketing). This post is intended to share even more work of some independent authors, such as myself, and earn some good karma in the process. Why not offer you a taste of a variety of authors with different content? Let me know if you have discovered a new author during this “Showcased Author Series”? My objective is to pick out different authors that offer a variety of media content. For the record, I know nothing about the author other than what is showcased in the author article that was shared, via Awesome Gang. Feel free to copy and paste and share this content on your blog, if you like. As an author, if you want to add more information, drop it down in the comment section below and I will edit and add at my earliest convenience. For now, I’m connecting with the authors in an effort to build my author network. Hopefully, they will follow me back on social media. I’m game to cross promote each other on social media as well. Just let me know or re-tweet one of my posts and I will automatically return the favor on Twitter. I’m totally cool with many ways to help each other market each other. When you are a small content creator, it is important to help others out. I’m even submitted #ConstructionTales to both Awesome Gang and Book Reader Magazine recently. When I’m ready to release my children’s book Not All Girls Play With Dolls on Amazon, I shall submit again at that time. My first children’s book #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls is to empower young kids to pursue their passions even if it is not normally the tradition in their society. Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. For now, here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Sanzaki Kojika

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write under the pen name is Sanzaki Kojika. I have been writing since a child and always immersing myself in the fantasy world. It only made sense that I would become a writer myself. I currently have 12 novels completed and published, 2 artbooks, and 17 graphic novels. I am always writing and creating.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Zos Kias vol 14 as of Feb 2022. I am also already working on the next volume as well as Hanif, the long awaited sequel to Altier. I find inspiration all around me, but with Zos Kias specifically, it draws heavy inspiration from gothic literature, manga, and Aleister Crowley, the Ordo Templi Orientis, and Zos Kia.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to get a lot of writing done in weird place. I sometimes find it easier to write when out than home. The majority of Hanif has been written in the waiting rooms at doctors’ offices.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Terry Brooks and Barbara Hambly were the two big authors that influenced me as a writer at the beginning. Since then, a lot of others have come into play. I have a huge library of books and love to read, so I’m constantly learning new things.

What are you working on now?
My big project right now is Hanif, the very long awaited sequel to Altier. Altier was intended to be a oneshot, but thanks to fans “pursuading” me, I finally decided to write what happens after. I always had the idea in my head, but never planned to do much with it. It’s been a lot of fun working with the story, especially some of the new characters.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Haven’t found it yet, but I’m still learning.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. It’s good to make good habits and get in the practice of just sitting down to write, even if it’s only a little bit.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
An English teacher in highschool gave me the best advice, so I’ll repeat it here: “All that stuff you’ve learned in English growing up? Forget it. Writing fiction isn’t like that.”

What are you reading now?
Reading the latest Dresden Files book!

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing, haha. I’m also working hard to promote myself more as a writer. I am hoping to do an in-person book tour in the next year or two. I had started getting it planned and locations when COVID hit, so things have been strange.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh man, that’s a tough one! Honestly, a notebook and a sketchbook might be enough for me though…

Showcased Author- 2.) Butch & Louie

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
We’ve published three books in the last year: Butch & Louie’s Book of Stress-Relieving Humor: Feel Better Fast, Butch & Louie’s Book of Poetry, and Butch & Louie’s Book of Odd Short Stories.

The only thing they have in common is us, Butch & Louie.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Our last book is Butch & Louie’s Book of Odd Short Stories. Our inspiration was poverty.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, we only write with words we can spell.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Mrs. Blanchard, our tenth grade English teacher, encouraged our study of etymology, which looks at the origin of words and how they’ve changed over time.

One day, she asked us to stay after class to discuss some specific things she thought we could do to improve ourselves. As we were taking notes on everything she said, she used the word incorrigible in a reference to us. We raised our hands and asked her if she could spell that, and maybe use it in sentence to put it into context for us.

She said, “Of course. You two are incorrigible idiots who can’t spell sh*t!” She suggested we hang around for the summer and take a class in etymology which might help us learn to string two words together that make some kind of sense.

At first, we thought etymology might be a cooking class, but thanks to Mrs. Blanchard, we got our first real lessons in understanding and using words. However, she was wrong about us not being able to spell the word “sh*t.” If she had looked around the school, she would have credited us with using it in several places, both in context and out of context.

Mrs. Blanchard would probably be surprised to know we over came being idiots and wrote three books with all the words spelled correctly. Unfortunately, she has dementia now and lives in a home with other people who can’t remember who lives next door. However, we’ve been told that every time our names are mentioned, she gets very animated and needs tranquilizers to calm down, so we know she still remembers us. Why wouldn’t she? We’re Butch & Louie.

What are you working on now?
Lately, we’ve been thinking about a plan to spring Mrs. Blanchard from the home and take her for ride, but first we’ve got to adjust our cam chain tensioners. If the cam chain tensioners are too tight, we’ll have inner bearing problems. Then we’ll have to buy hydraulic tension cam plates, and won’t be able to take anyone for a ride.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
We give them away. In our marketing survey of 5000 people who showed signs of being able to read, they said they preferred books that didn’t cost anything. That did it for us, so all of Butch & Louie’s books are free.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Of course we do. Make sure you are very successful and make lots and lots of money before you start publishing books because you’re going to need it!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Make sure you are very successful and make lots and lots of money before you start publishing books because you’re going to need it!

What are you reading now?
We’re reading the instruction manual for adjusting our cam chain tensioners. Friday is date night! We’ve got to get it done.

What’s next for you as a writer?
We’re just waiting to the back from the Pulitizer Board.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
What! No streaming services?

I don’t know if it’s the way they captivate you or how they charm their way through life, but magic seems to follow them wherever they go. One day I caught a glimpse of that magic and had to pen the truth of The Land of Grand! The secret is out…

Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis

Being on time covers a multitude of sins.

What are you reading now?
Atomic Habits by James Clear

Vol. #28: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Showcased Author- 1.) Zerry Greenwood

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My husband and I raised seven, yes, I said seven, children on a cattle ranch in west-central Idaho. After eight blissful years of public school, we lost our minds and decided to homeschool them ALL! We survived with all our limbs intact, but we now own the east wing of St. Alphonsus Hospital. Seven active children left to run wild in the Rocky Mountains. What were we thinking?

I came by my insanity honestly. I am number eight of nine children. My parents’ insanity led them to name us Jerry, Terry, Sherry, Merry, Kerry, Cherry, Perry, Zerry, and Berry… all our middle names start with an L.

Welcome to my loud, crazy, wonderful life.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Replacement Order
The book wrote itself, I sat down to write a comedy, but this book of pain and struggle came out.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Every book I ever read inspires me.

What are you working on now?
A comedy in this same series, called Unsolicited Mail. Miriam Tanner is not the brightest crayon in the box, but she will light up the streets of Idaho City. Her sights are set on Colton Fuller, the uptight manager of the local haberdashery, whose only desire is to take her snipe hunting and go back to his quiet life. Will Mariam secure herself a husband or find herself frozen in a snowbank.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never go to bed angry, settle your life daily.

What are you reading now?
Editing.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Editing and writing a new series called Reasons Two. A series of second chances at romance.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Bible, To Kill a Mocking Bird, and The Taming of Lady Lorinda.

Showcased Author- 2.) Jane O’Roarke

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written six books – Four in my Men of Honor Series and Three in a new Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series that releases in Spring 2022.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Controlling the Game – I just loved this book. It’s about some of the younger members in my series, and their love of computer gaming. Sophie, the heroine is kick-ass in both her gaming life and also as a data nerd! She goes for a wild weekend in Vegas and comes home to a few surprises!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so – but then, they wouldn’t be unusual to me, right? I can’t spell – and I don’t see grammatical mistakes – so that’s a big problem for me. I write really fast – but have to spend a lot of time editing before it even goes to the editors!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I loooove Julie Garwood and Jude Deveraux, Suzanne Brockmann, Cherry Adair, Emma Holly, Sarah J Mass, Karen Marie Moning – more recently – I like L.J. Shen, Brittney Sahin – I’m all over the place. I like most genre fiction. I’ve been reading a really long time! LOL

What are you working on now?
I am working on the edits for my Eve of Fae Series which will have three books releasing back to back starting in March 2022.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I really like BookFunnel – and Goodreads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stick with it and tell the story that you want to tell! You will hear a lot about writing for the market – but if you like your characters and enjoy your story – then I’m sure there is someone else (or many someones!) that will also like it!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Get thick skin and don’t take reviews personally. It’s hard – but you just have to push through and keep writing.

What are you reading now?
I just finished L.J. Shen’s new book, and also Shannon McKenna’s series. I was thinking of reading a new book (to me) of Ilona Andrews.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m excited about switching over to Sci-Fi/Fantasy for awhile – but then I have to get back and write Nico and Drago’s story!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Anything by Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Suzanne Brockmann and Linda Howard – the Grand Dames of Romance for me!

Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. For now, here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Yvonne Richards

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in the West Midlands, recently widowed from a wonderful husband of 40 years.

I have always written on and off, but wrote two novels in the early 2000’s, one being a fanfic, which was what drew me to writing more prolifically. I’ve written another romance novel now, but my main focus moving forward as an author is to help promote work in the environment, especially fostering a love of wildlife in children.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Billy the Badger is Sad! as part of the Tales from Prickly Hedge series.

I live in the West Midlands in my very own Prickly Hedge – a beautiful garden that is home to all manner of wildlife, including badgers.

This gave me the idea to create Bubble and Squeek, two hedgehogs who have fun and adventures in the garden they call their own, namely Prickly Hedge. Through the stories and their adventures, they learn how best to help all their wildlife friends. It is hoped that this will inspire young readers to engage more with wildlife and hopefully begin to not only help preserve it but create habitats in which it can thrive.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I know of.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I don’t think anyone has influenced me per se in terms of writing. I read a lot of Danielle Steele before writing my romance novels.

In terms of personal development though, Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I first heard it on audio cassette in the early 90’s and haven’t looked back since.

What are you working on now?
The third book in the Tales from Prickly Hedge book series.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well, AwesomeGang.com is, well, AWESOME.

I haven’t got into the swing of things with marketing yet, so I can’t really answer this one. I suppose if you pay for advertising, it has to be Amazon, which is where your books are.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Spend AS MUCH time looking at making marketing connections as you do writing – and never give up.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Two actually:

Measure twice, cut once and Be present in the moment.

Says it all, think before you act, research before you jump and actively enjoy every moment you get to be alive on our glorious planet.

What are you reading now?
I have a lot of books TO read, but I just don’t get the time nowadays to read, sadly.

They mainly range from personal development to Tudor history to UK politics to spiritualism. Bit eclectic.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m hoping to move into helping children’s reading charities to improve reading standards and literature in countries where facilities are lacking.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I suppose my Kindle is out of the question?! LOL.

7 Habits by Stephen Covey – you can always be better even if alone
Flip It by Michael Heppell – I think you’d need to flip your mindset if you were stranded on a desert island
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J K Rowling – I’d feel like I had the complete set by reading the last one – lol
The Prophet by Khalil Gibran – beautiful story book.

Showcased Author- 2.) Trenor Rapkins

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my debut book. It is only about 140 pages but it took years to complete. I lost count of how many.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Lords of Invention. I must have been inspired by the steampunk subgenre and the amazing story of Nikola Tesla.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
If I feel like my writing is getting too technical and rigid I will drink an alcoholic beverage and loosen things up! haha.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was a big Clive Barker fan when I was younger. I appreciate Cormac Maccarthy’s writing style these days. Alan Moore was primarily the one who got me into graphic novels.

What are you working on now?
I am working on two novellas. One is historical fiction that takes place in ancient Greece that is based on a true story. The second is both dystopian and utopian science fiction. It is going to be good. I promise.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still trying to figure that out.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start with self-publishing. It is not only very educational but it helps to build your platform, which is what you will need if you want to work with companies in the future.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It was from the mythologist Joseph Campbell. It was something along the lines of “Follow your bliss.”

What are you reading now?
All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. So far so good. My editor recommended it to me.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Didn’t you already ask me that question?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
It would be books about how to survive on a desert island.

Showcased Author- 3.) Ashley Poole

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written about 10 books in my lifetime, not all of which are published. I am a stray cat feeding, introvert empath energy sensitive person who enjoys writing, music, movies, painting and nature.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Heal & integrate Shadow Workbook: Trauma Toolkit” is the name of one of my latest books. Wanting to get to know myself on a deeper level and wanting to heal from my past is what inspired me to write this book. Wanting to heal the world ultimately made me do it.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like writing in dark mode. I,also, write more at night time.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are so many good authors and books out there! It’s hard to just choose a few. Stephen King and Cassandra Clare are two of my favorite authors.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on four different books at the same time right now to avoid burn out. One is a book on angels, I’m writing the second book to “Heal & Integrate Shadow Workbook: Trauma Toolkit”. I’m writing an empath guide to the world. And I’m writing a book on how to write a book and get published.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m just now starting out so I haven’t really found a Best Way yet. But I’m advertising on Amazon and Google right now. I’m also selling on selling apps.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Work hard, follow through, have a great marketing plan, network.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Let it go.

What are you reading now?
Since I just published a few books, I haven’t had much time to read anything other than learning how to do what I’m supposed to be doing after polishing a book.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have no clue and that’s the fun part. There is no telling where this path can take me.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Khalil Gibran’s “The Prophet” and a few books by Edgar Allen Poe.

Vol. #26: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Showcased Author- 1.) JENNIFER BROWN-BANKS

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Awesome to be here. I am a veteran freelance writer, award-winning blogger and award-winning poet. I’m also a senior editor of a regional publication in the Midwest.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
ODE TO TONI MORRISON–It’s a book of poetry on an array of topics, fun themes and timely events, inspired by Ms. Morrison’s impressive body of work and her legacy.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually start on the computer very early (when most folks are sleep) with a cup of hot tea.
I also dig listening to music sometimes as I create. Typically Jazz or something upbeat and loud.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE
DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF
YOUR NEXT LEVEL LIFE–KAREN ARRINGTON
THE BIBLE

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on expanding my client base, my writer’s income, and getting more poetry published in literary journals.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Typically my blog (Pen and Prosper) and email blasts. Good reads is also a good site for visibility.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make excellence your brand. Study successful authors in your genre of interest. Get trusted feedback.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Go where you are celebrated, not just tolerated.” Joel Osteen

What are you reading now?
LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW FANTASY-JENNIFER DOTSON (POETRY)
TAME YOUR TONGUE-DEBORAH SMITH PEGUES

What’s next for you as a writer?
Conducting book tours for busy authors and promoting my new poetry book.
I also hope to land a traditional book contract in 2022/2023.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
THE BIBLE
THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE- RICK WARREN
DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF-RICK WARREN
AND THE PHOTOGRAPHY/POETRY OF GORDON PARKS

Showcased Author- 2.) Jake Allen Coleman

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Fantasy and Science Fiction author born and raised in Southern California, eventually pursuing a degree in Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and migrating to the middle of the country to Texas. He now calls Colorado Springs home, along with my wife, two daughters and son.
One of my earliest literary memories is of Frodo and Sam outside the gate at Bree. The wall was bigger, the night darker, and the thunder louder, but reading J.R.R. Tolkien sparked a lifetime love of reading fantasy that later expanded to include science fiction.
Currently published, I have the complete Eligium series available both individually and as a box set on Amazon. You can also find The Geneva Factor under the pen name Jacob Allen.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a Kindle Vella project titled A Shot in the Dark. The idea came from a science fiction series I’m working on and was originally intended as a spin-off. The published episodes are Part 1 of a five part journey for the protagonist.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My wife will never understand it, but I enjoy listening to classic rock while I’m writing. There’s something about the energy of the music that provides momentum. I’ve also got a candle with a “Lanai” scent. The island vibe keeps me relaxed and fluid.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Where to begin? In no particular order…Tolkien, Arthur C. Clarke, C. S. Lewis, J.D. Robb, Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, Michael Anderle, A.G. Riddle to name a few.

What are you working on now?
My current project is a science fiction series I plan to launch later this year. The first two books are drafted and I’m about a quarter of the way through an initial draft of the third book. Set in Earth’s far future, it has some of my favorite scifi elements; including science-y concepts, strategy, and political conspiracies. There’s a mystery at the heart of the plot that required a long-game in plotting, which has been a lot of fun.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still working on this one!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write. Write. Write. You can take a hundred online classes and hear all sorts of noise, but nothing builds your skill as a writer like the act of putting pen to paper. Even thirty minutes a day adds up to thousands of words.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Establish a set of annual goals and then focus that down to no more than three per quarter. More than that is overwhelm. Each week set objectives that progress your big three.

What are you reading now?
I’m in the middle of a re-read of The Wheel of Time. Currently on Winter’s Heart and looking forward to the Big Event at the end. (If you know, you know.)

What’s next for you as a writer?
I really want to be intentional about the launch of this next series so will be spending time establishing my brand in the market and helping readers find my books. I have a backlog of other ideas ready to start plotting, but I am focusing on a quality experience for my readers.

Showcased Author- 3.) David Rich

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
David Rich began practicing law in Phoenix and was then recruited as a law professor at ASU College of Law. He then tried private practice but found the cushy job of assistant attorney general more to his liking. He retired in his 40s to become a sailing captain, pilot, and full-time traveler, living in almost every country on the planet while writing dozens of travel stories and six books: Myths of the Tribe, When Religion and Ethics Diverge (Prometheus Books 1993) examined the influence of organized religion on ethics, 2nd ed. 2019. RV the World, 2nd ed., 2018, combines his seventeen-years RVing the world with his wife Mary insisting anyone can do it. In 2019 David wrote The ISIS Affair, a satire on religion and nationalism in Syria subtitled Putting the Fun Back in Fundamentalism, and Scribes of the Tribe, Our greatest Thinkers on Religion and Ethics. He published Antelopes, A Modern Gulliver’s Travels, in 2020 and Sail the World?, the prequel to RV the World, in October 2021. Six books.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Latest book was Sail the World?, Prequel to RV the World. Sail the World was inspired by having tried to circumnavigate, the colorful characters and many scrapes along the way, from almost sinking in the Pacific Ocean to vicious storms at sea resulting in complicated repairs, and the many new friendships and adventures along the way.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, now spending time marketing!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Way too many to list comprehensively: Hawking, Feynman, John Gardner, Paul Theroux, and dozens of others.

What are you working on now?
RVing South America and the second is RVing OZ and NZ.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still looking for that!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing is rewriting.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write daily.

What are you reading now?
Ian Rankin, Andrea Camilleri, and Phillip Wylie

What’s next for you as a writer?
Books on continents we’ve RVed: South America and OZ/NZ

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That would definitely not be enough books! My wife reads a book a day, and has for 40 years. I can’t keep up with her but usually read maybe one out of five that she reads! No time for more.

Vol. #25: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Is your Friday flowing well for you so far this afternoon? Do you have any plans for the weekend? I plan on spending time with friends having dinner this weekend. Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. For now, here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Yvonne Rediger

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Saskatchewan, lived and worked in northern Manitoba, Alberta, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
I’ve been writing since I was in my teens. My favourite genres are Mystery, Urban Fantasy, and Romantic Suspense, each with a bit of humour.
March 6, 2022, my tenth novel will be released.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Condo Crazy is the third book in the cozy Musgrave Landing Mysteries series. This work inspired by my sister and the crazy things that happened in her condo building. She was great about letting me weave her adventures into a story. I like to add humour to my stories and Condo Crazy has some funny things happen along with a few mysteries to solve.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know about unusual, to me they seem normal. I scuba dive and sail with my husband. I’m also the videographer on his Pallet Cabin YouTube channel. We own a parcel of land and my husband always wanted to build a cabin from scratch, so here we are.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tanya Huff and her many, many books. She too writes several genres, all have mystery of a type to solve like mine. Ann Cleeves and her Vera series influenced my other mystery series, The Adam Norcross Mysteries. Linwood Barclay, his dry wit. Harlen Coben too, there are so many.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m working on the next Adam Norcross mystery, The Right Road, the follow up to The Wrong Words from 2021. While the previous on was set on Vancouver Island, this one will contain more travel, Afghanistan to Canadian Prairies.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
You can find all my news and the books here: https://blackyvy50.wixsite.com/yvonnerediger

There is no link as yet for Condo Crazy, it’s coming soon!
http://bookswelove.net/rediger-yvonne/

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read writing craft books. If you have a favourite author and he or she has written a ‘how I write’ book, read it. Check you local library for books as well. Also, don’t think you have to have your whole story figured out before you start typing, you don’t. Begin, that is the first step. Write the scenes that keep you up at night first. Later you can daisy-chain them together and reorganize them.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just write it down. You can’t edit a blank page.

What are you reading now?
Terry Pratchett’s Jingo. I love Sir Sameul Vimes and the Watch in Discworld. Sir Terry knew how to write humour along with big social issues.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I have The Right Road completed and submitted to my publisher. It will be on to book 4, as yet untitled, of the Musgrave Landing Mysteries. I think a mystery weekend theme may be in store for Gladys and Arlington.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Lois McMaster Bujold’s Shards of Honour Omnibus. Tanya Huff’s Blood Series Omnibus. Ann Cleeves’ latest Vera novel and the bible.

Advice: Issues With People Taking The Tasks Of Others

Hello Everyone!

Let’s say cheers for Friday and the upcoming weekend!! Any plans for the weekend? I’m struggling with my alternate day fasting this week. I’m scheduled to catch up with a fellow electrician that I went to apprentice school for dinner on Saturday evening. We have not connected in quite a few years so it should be fun to catch up with each other. Thankfully, it’s quiet on my jobsite today. As I keep asking in each of my posts, please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you a piece of Quora advice that I found to be interesting. This topic is on someone allowing another person to take on a task only to get mad at them for not yet finishing it. This is the exact reason why I found team projects in college to be highly frustrating. My grade depended on all parties doing their part. I was incredibly frustrated with people during group presentations. It’s just a fact of life that not all people are diligent with getting stuff done. It’s obviously a different thing when you delegate tasks to people in your personal life. If you allow someone else to do things on your behalf, then you have to be patient. The only time I agree with getting mad at someone is when you agree to a time frame ahead of time and you are paying for the person’s services. If you are getting a person to do something for free that is not life critical, then you are the jerk for getting mad at them. What do you think about my position? If you disagree, let me know exactly how you came to that conclusion? To gain more clarity on my view, read the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“How do you deal with someone who insists on doing something, even when you say they don’t have to, but then they don’t do it when they say they will and when you show frustration, they make you seem like the problem? Why do people do this?”

By Ashley Mintz

MY RESPONSE:

“Being the master over your own domain is amazing. As a person who likes to knock out tasks quickly, I don’t like to delegate much. I know that if I shed tasks off my plate, I’m subjected to how the other person tackles the task. I believe that if you rely on anyone to take care of a task on your behalf, you are subjected to their time table. If you want it done under time constraints, you really need to do it yourself. You have to ask as to their lead time for completion before even agreeing to let them do the task. If you don’t ask that, then you are in the wrong. People offer to do things, which is kind, as a gesture of kindness to you. However, it may not work out for that particular task. It is wrong to allow someone to do a task then get mad when it’s not done fast enough. This person is saving you the hassle of doing the task yourself. You can’t shed a task onto someone else AND demand them to do it fast. That’s a little greedy to ask for both. The only time this makes sense is if you are paying them to do the work with an agreed upon time frame. This is the only time where you are correct with getting frustrated with the other person for slacking. This should be a lesson learned to do things yourself if you want it done swiftly. I wish you luck and success with future tasks. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

Thanks for carving time to read my blog post today. Let me know your thoughts on my position? Are you the type who hates delegating tasks? Do you love taking part of the load off your shoulders? If you are good at delegating, how often are you frustrated? I feel like I would not delegate if there is a chance that I will be frustrated with the other person’s lack of urgency. Now, you are aware that I’m not professing to have the best answer. I’m only offering a viewpoint that may not have been previously considered. Let me know your take down in the comment section below since other opinions are encouraged and embraced here on my website/blog. Advice: Afraid Of Changing Out Of Fear Of Public Opinion

Hello Everyone!

Is your Thursday afternoon working out for ya? Let’s finish those work shift/home obligations and get ourselves home. Okay? I’m having another day where I’m fasting. My co-worker talked me into eating part of a Legendary Foods protein bar. This one is birthday cake flavored and actually tasted amazing! I’m going to order me some on Amazon so I can bring them to work to share with the homies. Thankfully, there are still no issues on my jobsite today. As I keep begging in each post, please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you a piece of advice that I shared today on Quora. This topic is on changing who you are while fearing public opinion. I’m sad for people who change the core of who they are for the sake of being liked by others. I look at it like you never REALLY know who genuinely likes you and who secretly despise you. Why not be who you are and let the dust settle? The people who like you will like you for who you are. Being your authentic self is the best move. Getting caught in a lie is the worst for a person’s reputation in their career world. Once you get caught, it’s hard to change that new perception of you. No matter what the hell you do, you can’t get all people to like you. You might as well do what you want to do in life, be your happiest self, and give the haters something to talk about. People who fly under the radar and not making moves won’t get people’s attention. If you have an audience of people who don’t like you, you must be doing something right. Check out the posed question and my response in the comment section below to get my thoughts on this topic:

POSED QUESTION:

““You are allowed to get up one day and decide to change who you are. We don’t have to stay the way people see us out of fear that they won’t like the person we want to be” do you agree?”

By Michael Okeke

MY RESPONSE:

“I believe your goals and ambitions change every 10-years. The stuff that was once important to me in my 20’s is not as important in my 40’s. My goals in my 30’s shifted dramatically once I got into my 40’s. I also believe that you need to be true to yourself. Yes, you can wake up one day and make some changes in your life. It makes no sense to be inauthentic around others. I don’t agree with portraying an image of yourself that is not real. The only thing you have in life is your word. Being fake puts yourself out there to be open for others to see through your lies. Once you are discovered as a liar, you lose your credibility and trust with others. People typically do not want to do business with liars. I always appreciate a person who is honest even if they are rough around the edges and not exactly who I want as a personal friend. You know exactly who they are and what to expect. Why would you want people to like the fake you and not the real you? Keeping up with a fake persona is exhausting. You have to remember every lie you fabricated. Let go of that fear of people not liking you. As it is, you don’t know who really likes you versus the people who pretend to like you. Authentic people sleep the best at night. No matter what you do, you cannot get all people to like you. If you pop up on a person’s radar and they are either jealous or hate you, you know you’re doing something right. People usually have distain for the successful ones. I wish you much luck and success. #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

Advice: (7) Nonverbal Ways To Make A Positive First Impression

Hello Everyone!

Is your Thursday morning going smooth and excellent so far!? Hopefully, you have another smooth day as you finish those work shift/home obligations. I’m having another day where I’m fasting. I cracked like an egg last night and had a grilled chicken salad. It tasted fantastic!! I find fasting to be a huge challenge that I’m working on conquering and getting better at mastering it. Today, I am not fantasizing about food so far. Thankfully, there are no issues on my jobsite today. As I keep begging in each post, please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you a list of (7) ways to make a non-verbal good first impression. I asked two fellow co-workers to help me out with the list. We had some fun with coming up with the seven items. They were slightly surprised that I agreed to some of their feedback and added it to the list below. I explained that the readers have figured out that I’m a female construction worker chick with no filter on my mouth. Therefore, I opted to write down whatever foolery that came out of their mouths. Now, go ahead and read the posed question and my recommended list in the comment section below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What are seven nonverbal ways to make a positive first impression?”

By Aayush Mahera

MY RESPONSE:

“Here is my list of (7) non-verbal good first impressions:

Come in on time at the agreed location

Come in well dressed and appropriate for the task at hand

Have good hygiene (specifically no boogers)

Don’t have bad body odor (take that shower)

Don’t come in acting like a jerk or a bendeho. Have a cheerful demeanor

Be eager and willing to be helpful and even open doors for those in need

Smile!

I received group input from my co-workers on this list. 🙂 Much success and luck! #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous”

Advice: My Thoughts On Woke-ism

Hello Everyone!

How are you making out on your Wednesday afternoon!? Hopefully, you have a smooth day as you finish out your work shift/home obligations. I’m having a day where I’m fasting today. I am fantasizing about having some food which is not good. Thankfully, there are no issues at work. Before I forget to mention it (just kidding!), please connect with my son John Collazo on his social media that is under his name for his “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand that he is building. For this blog post, I’m sharing with you some advice that is being delivered through my construction chick life lens. This Quora question is about the definition of ‘wokism’ and whether or not it is considered usually disparaging. I’m honestly conflicted about the term. While I find super sensitive people to be annoying, I do see their value. Over time, they manage to move the needle of an entire society towards a more tolerable group of people. You don’t have to totally agree with people and their ‘radical’ thoughts, just let them have their section of the sandbox to do as they wish. As long as they don’t hurt anyone and I don’t have to live with them, I look away from radical folks. New generations pop up and become more tolerable of people and their quirks. What comes to mind when you hear this modern term? Let me know as to what you think of my view on the term in the comment section down below. I’d most certainly like to know how your culture helps to shape your view on this modern way of thinking? That would most certainly be amusing to me. Without giving away the store, go ahead and read the posed question and my advice on the phrase down in the comment section below:

POSED QUESTION:

“How would you define ‘woke-ism’? What do people mean when they refer to “wokeness”? When it is said, is it usually disparaging?”

By Barbara Young Capalbo

MY RESPONSE:

“Without even looking up the definition yet, I think of “wok-ism” as people, often young adults and teens, who are under the perception they are more enlightened and sensitive to societal concerns than their peers. In a way, I believe that these people are trying to push the needle towards social justice. Now, let’s look up the official definition. According to one definition, “woke(ism) is an English adjective meaning ‘alert to racial prejudice and discrimination’ that originated in African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism, and has also been used as shorthand for left-wing ideas involving identity politics and social justice, such as the notion of white privilege and slavery reparations for African Americans.” Some folks will accuse others of “virtue signaling” in response to speaking on hot societal topics. Virtue signaling is defined as: “the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one’s good character or the moral correctness of one’s position on a particular issue.” Overall, I’m pleased to see a shift in the societal mindset in the 46 rotations I’ve made around the sun. It takes a society many years to make shifts in collective thought. However, some of the people I see are so sensitive. While I understand being respectful to others is a necessity (even if you don’t understand or agree), walking on egg shells shouldn’t be a regular occurrence either. In some discussions, there is talk about legal action against people who do not use your proper pronouns. In my mind, that is extreme and over the top. I don’t understand “cancel culture” either. It’s another form of banning speech that you don’t agree with in my mind. While it is good when it swings in your favor, beware of how much that will censor your own speech in the future. No matter how many social justice Tik Tok videos you create, you cannot get everyone to think exactly like you. As a brand-new adult back in the 1990’s, I remember not being happy with the mindset of society at that time. As a woman in construction for the past 29-years, I have encountered some social injustice. I did deal with some dudes who were trying to sabotage my career path since they didn’t want to see a woman in construction. I’ve been pushed to do tasks that normally two guys performed in an effort to “belong” there. I did see people, who didn’t share my skin color, who were treated differently as well in my presence. As a logical thinker, I’ve never understood the concept of judging a person based upon factors they can’t control, such as skin color. Instead, judge a person based upon logical metrics such as a person’s character. No one has yet to offer a logical pattern of thought for their prejudice towards others besides my parents or society has told me to think that way. Fast forward 30-years, there have been significant changes that I’ve experienced. The construction environment is probably the most raw and real environment to be submersed in. People have no filter and say exactly what the hell they want to say. To see the shift in that very raw mentality is quite impressive. I believe it is because each generation that comes up and replaces the older generation is a group that shares a more softened, understanding, open-minded viewpoint. Previous generations didn’t have the internet to share ideas or gain different perspectives. Your experiences were limited to what went on in your local community. It’s possible that having access to different perspectives tend to soften people’s previously hardened viewpoints. Previously, you only had your own personal encounters within your small sliver of society to experience. Nowadays, you can tap into any culture on the planet with just the click of a keyboard. While some folks find woke people to be annoying, I find value in them. For every wild swing of the woke pendulum, it eventually settles in a more neutral location over time. While I’m not a fan of an overly sensitive person, I embrace a person who exercises respect and common courtesy to their fellow man. May you find the equilibrium that you seek! #ConstructionTales #VerballyDisastrous EDIT: I failed to specifically say if the term woke-ism is disparaging when I hear it. I kind of roll my eyes when I hear the term. However, I see the value in this mentality since it shifts the societal status quo over time to a more tolerable level. Therefore, I have mixed feelings on the term.”
