Hello Everyone!

I sure hope you are being productive and doing well on your side of the globe. I’m sharing with you a third Construction Tales Safety Topic #10 blog post that discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using either brushed or brushless power tool motors. Again, I apologize for not coming on for a period of time. However, I’m now actively creating brand-new YouTube video and blog safety content. As I have shared many times before, creating videos are very time consuming. It’s no surprise that my goal is to become a well known YouTube creator. Before I share my latest “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. I really would like to get back into releasing even more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. However, my time is limited and I have chosen to focus on my safety topic video project. My established “$ugar Momma Baddie” themed clothing and accessory collection is available on both Spring and Shopify ecommerce platforms. Check out the two designs that you can choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. The “$ugar Momma Baddie” Shopify and Spring store links are down below in this Quora blog post. The links for the paperback, e-book, and now audio version for my first children’s book that’s entitled, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” are also down below in this blog post. Both my first children’s book and my #ConstructionTales book are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, and Audible. The audio versions of both of my books can be found in four Audible markets that include: France, Dutch, U.K., and the United States. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review my latest Construction Tales Safety Topic video that will be featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

While researching on the topic of power tools, I decided to share that direct current motors, known as the acronym “DC” for short, are classified as either brushed or brushless. Brushed motors have been around for over one hundred years since the birth of electricity. Meanwhile, brushless motors were created back in 1962 during the advancement of solid-state electronics. The first brushless motor was introduced by T.G. Wilson and P.H. Trickey. The “cat whisker” was the first solid-state electronic component that was first developed back in 1906. Stay tuned for future videos where I break down solid-state electronic components. In this video, we shall review how some motor components work together along with the advantages and disadvantages of brushed versus brushless motors.

These DC motors convert electric current into rotational motion. What is the difference between brushed versus brushless motors? The primary difference between brushed and brushless motors would be that brushed motors are mechanically driven while brushless are electronically driven. Brushed motors contains both a stationary part that is called a stator and a moving part that is called a rotor. The stator has permanent magnets while rotors have electromagnets. Another key part that works with the rotor and stator is known as a commutator. The commutator is a specialized slip ring that is typically used on DC motors. The commutator transfers electrical power between the stationary housing and the rotating armature with the bonus purpose of reversing the electrical current direction. The direction of the current is reversed every one hundred and eighty degrees. By flipping the polarity of the magnetic pull, this is what causes the continuation of the spinning of the power tool. This also ensures that the torque continues in the same direction. The carbon brushes work with the commutator, stator, and rotor to transfer the electrical voltage. The voltage creates an electromagnetic field within the rotor.

Now that we have a basic understanding on brushed versus brushless motors, let’s look at the pros versus cons between the two types of DC motors. What are the disadvantages of using a brushed motor? The disadvantages are the following:

  1. less efficiency
  2. hotter motor
  3. shorter life span
  4. requires more maintenance

What are the advantages of using a brushed motor? The advantages are the following:

  1. affordable cost to produce
  2. ability to be mass produced
  3. simple to operate
  4. reliable
  5. available in many sizes and ratings
  6. easy controls
  7. good on lower duty cycles

What are the disadvantages of using a brushless motor? The brushless disadvantages are the following:

  1. Requires electronic controller
  2. More expensive
  3. More complex.

What are the advantages of using a brushless motor? The advantages of using a brushless motor include the following:

  1. Precise speed control
  2. Better suited to continuous or long-running duty cycles
  3. Longer life
  4. Less maintenance
  5. High efficiency

It appears that brushless power tool motors are the choice to make. What is your motor of choice? Well, my friend, this wraps up what I have for now on how a DC motor operates along with the pros versus cons of choosing between a brushed or brushless power tool. Safety Topic Of The Day: The History & Technology That Contributes To Power Tools

Photo Credit: Construction Tales Safety Topic #10: Part A- The History & Technology That Contributes To Power Tools

Hello Everyone!

I’m sharing with you a second Construction Tales Safety Topic blog post that discusses the history and technology that contributes to modern day power tools. I’m coming to you to share this post on a spring-like kind of day here in New York City. As I had shared earlier today, I actually finished catching up on crafting blog content into bite-sized YouTube videos. Now that I have finished catching up on old blog posts, I now have to create brand-new content. Let me tell you that it is a bunch of work creating videos-very time consuming. As I shared before, my goal is to become a well known YouTube creator. Another goal is to get in front of the camera and be the person to deliver this video content. Before I share my “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review this latest Construction Tales Safety Topic video that will be featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

In this blog post and Verbally Disastrous YouTube video, I’m going to discuss the history of power tools and how they became the sophisticated tradesperson’s assistant of today. I have learned that the current global market for power tools is a $33 billion-dollar (USD) industry. Let’s take a look back to see how power tools were born and evolved. Technically, the first ‘power tool’ that was invented was created by the ancient Egyptians. This power tool is known as a lathe. The lathe was designed in order to help humans cut shapes in wood. Apparently, this ancient tool has been classed as a “power tool”. However, the lathe didn’t actually have either electric or battery power. In order to operate this tool, one person turned it while the other utilized the lathe. Despite being a two-man tool, operating an early lathe still required a lot of effort. According to my research, the first ever electric drill in the entire globe was invented back in 1889 by Arthur James Arnot. Mr. Arnot was a Scottish electrical engineer and inventor who was born in Hamilton, Scotland. Mr. Arnot attended the West of Scotland Technical College out of Glasgow, Scotland. Upon completing his education, Mr. Arnot moved to London to gain experience within electrical engineering under the leadership of Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti. This engineering duo began working on high voltage alternating current transmission work. Roughly around this time period, Thomas Edison was involved with high voltage direct current transmission work. After this crucial work experience, Mr. Arnot got the opportunity to work in Melbourne, Australia in order assist with building a Union Electric Company power plant. While he started working in Australia, he also worked on creating and even patented his electric drill by 1889. This drill was intended for miners to cut through rock.

Photo Credit: Arthur James Arnot’s Drill Patent

The German power tool company C&E Fein was born back in 1867. C&E Fein was launched as a “workshop for electrical and mechanical apparatus” by Wilhelm Emil Fein. By 1895, C&E Fein combined the power of an electric motor with a manual drill to develop their version of the early power tool. This very heavy drill, that clocked in at a hefty 16.5 pounds, was powered by a large but relatively weak DC electric motor. In all actuality, this first drill didn’t turn very fast at all. In order to even use the drill, the operator had to use both hands, grab it by both handles that were placed opposite of the motor, lean against a chest plate at the back of the drill, and help press it into the work surface. The world’s first power tool appeared to be cumbersome and unproductive by modern standards. By 1908, C&E Fein became a ‘specialized factory for power tools’. Initial efforts from the company focused on quickly improving the drill by making it even more powerful and lightweight. The next power tool to follow was the portable sanding machine. The C&E Fein tool that was developed next was the pneumatic hammer drill in 1914. This hammer drill technology was created with an air-cushioned striking mechanism. By 1927, the wood working industry benefited from the release of an electric handsaw. The automotive and aircraft industries also benefited from the development of the jigsaw back in 1933.

The birth of another power tool company, known globally as Black and Decker, has a rather unique and interesting story. Business partner Dunkin Black sold a car, back in 1910, and used the car proceeds in order to start a small machine shop. He teamed up with his friend Alonzo Decker and launched their business in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1914, Black and Decker both came up with some great ideas and used them to improve the C&E Fein power drill. By 1914, Black and Decker infused the design of the Colt .45 automatic pistol into their own improved version of the power drill. By 1916, Black & Decker had begun making their famous pistol-grip, trigger-switch electric drill. Remarkably, all modern handheld electric drills are descended from this evolved design. The big advantage to the Black & Decker design is that it can be operated by one person versus two people for the C&E Fein original power drill.

An interesting fact that I learned is that Black and Decker was hired by NASA to design tools for various space missions. This relationship pushed Black and Decker to create quite a few innovative power tools for space missions. These tools underwent rigorous testing, such as anti-gravity, extreme temperature, and atmosphere testing, in order to qualify for important missions. These Black and Decker power tools were tested under water at major depths. Other tests involved bringing power tools to high altitudes followed by sharp nose dives in order to simulate anti-gravity conditions that occur in space. A cordless rotary hammer drill was created specifically for the Apollo moon program. Astronauts needed the drill to extract moon rock samples. On the Gemini project, a zero-impact wrench was required spun bolts in zero gravity without impacting the astronaut operating the wrench. Surprisingly enough, the introduction of various Black and Decker cordless power tools happened before the company’s contract with NASA. Black and Decker needed to be high tech prior to developing a relationship with NASA. The introduction of the first cordless screw gun was unveiled back in 1961. Black and Decker even crafts various types of medical instruments and even the small, cordless vacuum cleaner that’s known as a Dustbuster.

Obviously, the inventions of various electrical supply systems were required prior to introducing power tools. It wasn’t that long ago when humans relied heavily on oil lamps and fire for basic human consumption such as heat and home cooking. I was previously led to believe that the famous innovator Thomas Edison was the man, myth, and legend who invented the incandescent electric lamp back in 1879. However, I learned that he merely perfected this powerful piece of technology. In actual reality, the first incandescent bulb was born back in 1761. Mr. Edison was known to be really good at perfecting existing ideas. Rumor has it that, in a single day back in 1888, he wrote down a hundred and twelve ideas. Mr. Edison is credited with patenting a newly evolved product roughly every eleven days. Here are some of the inventions that belong to Mr. Edison’s long-lasting legacy: the phonograph, the kinetoscope, the dictating machine, the alkaline battery, the electric meter, a sap extractor, a talking doll, the world’s largest rock crusher, an electric pen, a fruit preserver, and even a tornado-proof house. Even if he grabbed the inventions that were initially crafted by others, it is indeed an art to re-engineer important technology that’s within it’s infancy. Much of this early technology are things that the average person takes for granted today. His ability to be photographed, during that era with very limited marketing, with the light bulb is what gave the public that same general impression. Thomas Edison was a household name since he had his name on many household appliances.

Let’s not forget the important contributions of Serbian-born Nikola Tesla. The electrical panel system is the average American is an alternating current system or known as AC for short. You can thank Tesla for that major contribution. Additionally, Tesla developed the ability to transmit power over power lines for long distances. The brilliant contributions of engineer Thomas E. Murray made the possibility of the New York City power grid even possible. Mr. Murray was involved in developing the modern safe delivery method of electricity from the electrical grid to the average modern building and important infrastructure throughout the United States. Another major contribution from Mr. Murray was the development of the electric motor back in 1821. The average human doesn’t fully understand the impact of being able to safely harness electricity to where we can coexist with limited major complications. Mishandling electricity for the average mere mortal could result in either severe disfiguration or death. The discovery of electromagnetic induction happened, courtesy of British physicist Michael Faraday, back in the 1830’s. This discovery aids in harnessing electricity as a force that can be controlled to improve productivity. There are laws that were observed that aided in learning how to safely harness electricity. One of the main principles of electrical theory is Ohm’s law that was created by German physicist George Ohm back in 1827. Ohm’s Law states that the current flow through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference (voltage) and inversely proportional to the resistance. The physical unit of resistance in electricity, known as an Ohm, was named after the accomplished physicist. Of course, there are many more contributors when speaking on the history of power tools. My goal is to break down these other contributors and topics into manageable bite sizes in order to offer a basic understanding that I will share in future videos.

This concludes what I have on the history and technology that contributes to modern power tools. Please help me and subscribe to my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel. Safety Topic Of The Day: The History & Technology Of Power Tools

Photo Credit: Construction Tales Safety Topic #10: Part B- Power Tool Components

Hello Everyone!

I’m sharing with you another Construction Tales Safety Topic blog post that discusses the main components for power tools. I hope you are doing well on this Thursday afternoon? I’m coming to you to share this post on a spring-like kind of day here in New York City. As I had shared before, I actually finished catching up on crafting blog content into bite-sized YouTube videos. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review this latest Construction Tales Safety Topic videos that will be featured on my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel:

In this blog post, let’s discuss some common power tool components. In my previous blog post and video, I discussed the history and evolution of the modern power tool. Together we even scratched the surface on contributions for electrical power and motors that make it possible to even create the power tool. If you prefer, look out for that blog post and Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel video to check out first before reviewing this content with me. As a global society, we have come a long way from the invention of the first power tool from 1895. We have benefitted from power tools that were rigorously tested and sent up with NASA astronauts for space missions. The average citizen now benefits from the birth of next level space technology. Let’s break down the average tool into its common parts. Once we identify the basic components, let’s review how each part contributes to the function of the power tool. Here are the main replacement components of a power tool?

Main Power Tool Components:

  • • Power switch
  • • Batteries
  • • Power cord
  • • Carbon brushes
  • • Bearings
  • • Drive belts
  • • Accessories

POWER SWITCH- One of the most important components of the power tool would be the power switch. Without a power switch, you do not have the capability to safely turn on and turn off the power tool. Therefore, you are dead in the water and unable to do your work. A power tool that cannot be shut down properly creates a safety hazard for the operator. Having to replace a power switch is a common occurrence for power tools after extended use. A damaged or worn-out power switch makes it a challenge to operate the power tool. A damage power switch can typically be discovered quickly by visually inspecting the power tool for damage. Power tools can overheat and that can cause the power switch to burn down or melt. If any of this damage is discovered with the power switch, it is essential to immediately take the tool out of service and make the needed repairs or replace the entire power tool.

BATTERY- As an avid cordless power tool user, you have already learned how quickly batteries drain out. Feel free to sigh in agony about that cordless battery that used to always die on you during important tasks. Batteries are the power tool component that needs to either be totally replaced or re-charged the most often. Some tools use specific sized disposable batteries that are designed for one-time-use. Other power tool models use rechargeable batteries that are accompanied by a charger with a power cord. Those rechargeable batterie types can be reused by charging them either through a charging port on the tool itself or by using a separate charging device. With continuous use, the lifespan of a rechargeable battery can be greatly reduced. Other external factors, such as water or high heat will affect the life of the battery. Battery fuel cells can burn out prematurely by continuously storing a battery within a high heat work environment. Once the fuel cell dies down, it cannot be recharged and has to be replaced by a brand-new battery.

POWER CORD- Obviously, it you are not using a cordless power tool, you are forced to open up the gang box and use a power tool with a power cord that’s required to be connected to a power source. These power cord connected power tools are usually made to be very durable and long-lasting compared to a cordless power tool. I always recommend having at least one power cord connected power tool just in case your batteries all decide to simultaneously go on vacation together. Word is that this is against company policy so what are the odds of this foolery happening? Power tools have multiple layers of insulation and protection. The term for these multiple layers of insulation is double insulated. Look for either the term “double insulated” or the universal symbol for this double insulated tool feature on the tool. Modern power tools are designed to be flexible and strong to hold up to the average construction environment. However, after continuous use, the power cord can surrender its usefulness after daily wear, tear, and abuse. The power cord insulation layers will get damaged and frayed; it’s only a matter of time. Suffering a breakage of any of the wires that rest inside the cord will also render the power tool as unsafe. Damage to the power cord or any of the prongs within the plug can be a major electrical hazard for the operator and nearby coworkers. Check your power cords daily to determine if they need replacement. Please make sure to take power cord damage very seriously and discard the cord immediately once a hazard is discovered.

CARBON BRUSHES- Carbon brushes are the electrical contacts for the power tool. The electrical contacts are that make the connection for the electrical flow of current between the stationary wires and the moving parts of the power tool. The average carbon brush is typically composed of graphite material. Graphite is a relatively soft material. After repeated use, the carbon brushes are subjected to getting worn down due to friction that occurs within the power tool. Friction happens and heat develops amongst the moving parts. Once carbon brushes are worn down, they can no longer make the same ample contact. Once contact with the carbon brushes is no longer consistent, the power tool can stop working. This is because the power tool is starved of the electricity that’s required to keep working. The carbon brushes on the power tool need to be replaced as soon as you notice that the power tool is either running a low speed or not consistently. Witnessing sparks inside the tool can come from worn out carbon brushes. Replace those carbon brushes since this can serve as an electrical hazard for the power tool operator.

BEARINGS- Bearings are a part of the power tool’s component what facilitates the sleek and steady movement of all of the power tool’s rotary parts. Bearings are typically composed of metal material and durable. However, over continuous use, the surfaces in contact with bearings tend to either corrode or simply just wear out. Be sure to perform basic maintenance on the bearings, such as periodic greasing or oiling, in order to dodge the any potential rusting and corrosion. You can always guarantee faster deterioration of the bearings if you run your power tool on a very high speed a lot. Deterioration can happen if you choose to use your power tool for unconventional methods. It is inevitable that you will have to replace the bearings at some point in the future. Choosing to operate a power tool with worn out bearings will most definitely diminish its efficiency and performance. Typical symptoms of having worn out bearings include loud screeching noises or the power tool easily becoming overheated.

ACCESSORIES- Now that we have discussed basic power tool components, let’s look at the extra parts. I refer to accessories as the extra bells and whistles of a power tool that you may or may not even need to function. Accessories are the components that are either built-in or have an engineered attachment and are purchased separately. Accessories can be extra parts such as: 1) cutting tools 2) blades 3) grinding wheels 4) drill bits. These accessories have a limited shelf life since they wear out or become damaged after continued use. Despite being disposable and needing to be frequently replaced, these parts are still a main functional part of the power tool.

This concludes what I have on the main components of power tools. Please help me and subscribe to my Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel. Hello Everyone!

I’m offering you yet another quick blog post on a low key Monday afternoon here in New York City. My weekend was also low key for me too. The weather dipped down to negative temperatures on Saturday. This temporary polar cap temperatures made me choose to stay inside and warm. I opted to stay home and catch up on personal stuff. I apologize for not posting in awhile. During the past few weeks that I’ve been off the grid, I have continued working on my new “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video series. It’s no surprise that these safety topic videos originally come from my written blog content. I have (3) more videos to create and load onto YouTube. Once I finish the existing blog content, I have to create new content. I will try to form some balance where I write and post here and then create the videos. It is a bunch of work that is time consuming. My goal is to become a well known YouTube creator. At some point, I will get in front of the camera and deliver this video content. Before I share my “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. My latest goal is to try and get back into releasing some more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. In order to create more podcast episodes, it will more than likely be safety related. That way I can kill two birds with one stone. I have made good use of my time on my latest video project. Hello Everyone!

I’m offering you a quick blog post on this rather uneventful Monday (I LOVE no chaos/being boring!). I had a fun weekend that was spent hanging out with my son and family at the movies and hanging out and hitting the dance floor. During the last work week, I continued working on my new “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video series. As mentioned before, these latest safety topic videos originally come from my written blog content. At some point, I will get in front of the camera and deliver this video content. Before I share my “Construction Tales Safety Topic” video content, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. My latest goal is to try and get back into releasing some more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. I initially thought I’d have some free time during the past two holiday weekends. I clearly missed the boat on the past two holiday weekends. However, I made good use of my time elsewhere on my latest project. This is short story #11 entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.

Double Quora Advice: Topics- Jail & Alternate Phrase On Singing

Hello Everyone!

I’m offering you a double dose of Quora advice here on a holiday Monday post Christmas in New York City. I do sincerely hope that you enjoyed your Christmas weekend with your beloved family and/or friends? I had an excellent time with my family and friends over the weekend. One of the kids got a karaoke machine for Christmas. This caused the majority of the crowd to get into singing classics and drinking beer and suck down Jell-O shots. I made the following Jell-O shots: 1) Screwball peanut butter whiskey & chocolate pudding 2) Lime Jell-O and vodka 3) cherry Starburst Jell-O and vodka 4) Blue Berry & Malibu Rum. I’m still working on sharing some more random blog topics. My latest safety topic of choice is on the evolution of the sidewalk shed. If you didn’t check it out, go look for it in my list of blog posts. Before we dive into my attempt at deciphering two more posed Quora questions, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. My latest goal is to try and get back into releasing some more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. I initially thought I’d have some free time during the holiday weekends. I clearly missed the boat on Christmas weekend. Therefore, I shall try for this upcoming New Years holiday weekend. My established “$ugar Momma Baddie” themed clothing and accessory collection is available on both Spring and Shopify ecommerce platforms. Both my first children’s book and my #ConstructionTales book are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, and Audible. The audio versions of both of my books can be found in four Audible markets that include: France, Dutch, U.K., and the United States. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review this latest Quora topic that I’ve chosen for you as the latest bathroom reading distraction. You’re quite welcome in advance. The first question is on interpreting a phrase around finding yourself in jail. The second question asks for another way to say, “your voice is strong and diverse”. Like with any question that I respond, walk away and return, I’m sure I can expand on these questions even further. However, I often resist the urge to edit since that was my response at the moment. I find the thought of doing anything that would put me in jail to be highly undesirable. I worked in a prison for about six months back in 2012. Not long after arriving in the jail, I had guys on the food cart line leaving me a paper bag of kitchen cuisine on a daily basis. My foreman was perplexed as to why this phenomenon was happening. I shrugged my shoulders and said that I had no idea why they were hooking me up. I would joke that I would be “safe” in jail in the event of a prison riot. I’m aware that this doesn’t necessarily mean “untouched”. Some of the inmates expressed their distaste for some of my co-workers who were perceived to have their noses in the air with a sense of superiority. I learned in the slammer that this position is not a good idea to hold when navigating amongst inmates. One of my co-workers joked and challenged me: “If you have any pull at all in this prison, you can get shrimp ramen noodles!” Alright bet! I indeed got a delivery of shrimp ramen noodles!! 😛 I’m going to write about even more experiences while working in jail in my #ConstructionTales Volume 2 book series when I find time to go back to writing it. The morale of the story is to treat people with kindness and they will respond accordingly. Go ahead and jump right off the diving board and get right into the two posed questions and my responses below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What does “you will find yourself in jail” mean?”

By Krystal4505 Washington

MY RESPONSE:

“The writer of the phrase is saying that they are concerned that the person in question has done activities that are considered to be illegal in nature. If the person has not already committed the actions, then they are perceived to be on the path to doing so. This can also be said with total sarcasm. Meaning that the behavior is greatly exaggerated and the phrase is intended to get a laugh. I wish you much luck and success on your journey in life. #ConstructionTales #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls #VerballyDisastrous”

POSED QUESTION:

“What’s another way of saying “Your voice is strong and diverse”?”

By- Michael Okeke

MY RESPONSE:

“My alternate way of expressing this phrase: “You sure sing a wide range of notes with that strong set of pipes for lungs”. #ConstructionTales #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls #VerballyDisastrous”

Quora Advice: Things People Think Yet Afraid to Talk About?

Hello Everyone!

Despite technically being a holiday Monday post Christmas, I’m here in the office holding down the fort on a chilly morning here in New York City. I genuinely hope you had an excellent Christmas weekend with your beloved family and/or friends. I had an excellent time with my family and friends over the weekend. Before we dive into my attempt at interpreting another posed Quora question, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review this latest Quora topic that I’ve chosen for you as the latest bathroom reading distraction. We are looking at things that people generally think about yet are afraid to talk about. What comes to mind for you?? Typically, I don’t go in and read the other answers that were posed by other folks. However, I am intrigued to read about other responses to this question. The responses run the gamut with everything from sex to a person’s physical qualities to a lack of motivation. I’m honestly searching for an unpredictable comment that I wouldn’t even think about. I maybe saw one semi philosophical response that was a series of posed questions. When I read it, I imagined it was a series of rapid fire questions. The questions are all bouncing back and forth on the insides of the person’s skull. I’m imagining it as being chaotic like a Looney Tunes cartoon. Go ahead and get into the posed question and my response below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What are some things which people generally thinks and are afraid to talk about that?”

By- Important Life Lessons

MY RESPONSE:

“One of the things that people think about yet are afraid to speak upon would be uncomfortable truths. Are you on the giving or receiving end of the uncomfortable truth? Knowing this position helps in determining the level of fear. It is way harder to receive the uncomfortable truth versus dish out some painful truth. A person’s ego can be highly fragile and can only handle so much feedback at a time. There is a balance between sharing a round of constructive criticism versus systematically dismantling a person’s character flaws through a microscope lens. Too much uncomfortable truths can ruin that person’s self-esteem and sense of worth as a person. Even if the feedback is one hundred percent true, those kernels of truth do not take the sting of exposure away. I would imagine a person hearing bold face lies from a person, disguised as their “truth”, would not make it any more palpable. By exposing uncomfortable truths, you can’t remove it once it’s been said and hide it under the bed. When doing this type of exposure on another person, just know that you must be prepared to be exposed for your own flaws. It’s natural to unleash previously withheld feedback once you are faced with a sudden avalanche of uncomfortable truths. I believe that a person who doesn’t do that mutual reveal and absorbs the feedback is of a strong character and great discipline. When hearing uncomfortable truths, it’s always good to consider the source. Why is this person coming at me? It is always wise to hear the feedback and then give yourself a breather. Once in a calmer state of mind, it’s important to think about the main talking points. Are they worthy of doing self reflection and working towards taking action to change the behavior? If so, then be mindful of past behaviors and work on evolving, via adopting better patterns of behavior. If the feedback is just a bash fest, then just try your best to forget what was said. Apply some distance between yourself and the person making false and/or exaggerated accusations. The goal is to avoid even further feedback in the future. You can’t hit a moving target or one that’s at a distance. I wish you luck on your life path and much success! #ConstructionTales #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls #VerballyDisastrous”

Safety Topic Of The Day: Evolution Of The NYC Sidewalk Shed

Hello Everyone!

We are powering through another Thursday together on a rainy day here in New York City. I’m coming to you live from my high rise residential project in Queens. By now I sure hope you got your Christmas shopping done? As I had wished in a previous blog post, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with your beloved family and/or friends this weekend. I’m making Jell-O shots for Christmas Eve. I will share with you in a future post what I end up crafting with some photos. I’m still working on sharing some more random blog topics. My previous safety topic of choice was on the history of high visible clothing. If you didn’t check it out, go look for it in my list of safety blog posts. Before we dive into my safety topic of choice, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. My latest goal is to try and get back into releasing some more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. I may have some free time during the next two upcoming holiday weekends. I want to dedicate some free time to also work on creating safety learning content for my two YouTube channels. My established “$ugar Momma Baddie” themed clothing and accessory collection is available on both Spring and Shopify ecommerce platforms. Check out the two designs that you can choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. The “$ugar Momma Baddie” Shopify and Spring store links are down below in this safety topic blog post. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review my latest chosen safety topic on the use of sidewalk sheds and supported scaffolding here in New York City. Let’s first go into the history of how sidewalk sheds were even born in the first place.

I remember learning about sidewalk sheds as soon as I started working down here within the five boroughs of New York City. I had previously worked for about 20-years with the tools as an electrician in the suburbs of New York City. There is a huge business in creating, renting, and dismantling sidewalk sheds here in New York City. Believe it or not, the sidewalk shed contracting business is an $8 billion dollar a year industry here in New York City. During the course of just about any form of construction work, it is required to create a sidewalk shed in order to protect pedestrians along the perimeter of a building. If you are not from NYC, you are probably asking, “what is a sidewalk shed”? (Refer to the above photo) Sidewalk sheds are the street-level pedestrian protection wooden and metal sheds that are required by law to remain on the sidewalk until a building hazard or construction project no longer poses a danger to the public. It’s no surprise that there was a monumentally tragic accident that first spurred the need for the initial sidewalk shed building code requirements. Additionally, similar accidents that happened subsequently also worked to push city council members towards evolving existing building code while adding even more sidewalk shed requirements. Back on May 16, 1979, a Barnard College student named Grace Gold was killed by a piece of falling terra cotta from the 8th floor of a building on West 115th Street. This fatality influenced then-mayor Ed Koch to implement the first round of sidewalk shed building code requirements that became known as ‘Local Law 10’ by 1980. By 1997 and 1998, New York City experienced several more highly publicized exterior wall failures. Two of these highly publicized incidents involved both midtown’s American Airlines Theatre and the Church of Scientology Building on West 46th Street. In response to a series of 1997 façade failures, New York City ‘Local Law 11’ of 1998 was created. Local Law 11 further added even more requirements for inspection and maintenance of the façades of buildings that are greater than six stories in height. Both of these laws require owners to get full building inspections from either a Registered Architect or Professional Engineer every five years. The designated inspector must deem the building as either: 1) Safe 2) Safe with a repair and maintenance program or “SWARMP” 3) Unsafe.

By 2010, this program went into the 7th Cycle and was renamed to FISP; now known as the Façade Inspection & Safety Program. The latest new regulations eventually evolved into today’s FISP program that expanded even further with inspections on balconies and railings that belong to a building. The last 8th cycle of regulations were amended, via approved significant changes, and took effect on February 20, 2020. Of all of the sidewalk sheds in use throughout New York City, what are some main reasons as to they even erected? According to NYC Dept. of Buildings Press Secretary Andrew Rudansky, “Approximately 37 percent of sidewalk sheds in NYC are related to the City’s Façade Inspection & Safety Program (FISP), which requires property owners with buildings higher than six stories to hire an engineer to inspect exterior walls. The other 62 percent of sidewalk sheds in NYC are related to construction and maintenance operations.” During the course of my research, I learned that the New York City local government maintains a live tracker website of all sidewalk sheds throughout all of the five boroughs. I shall share the link down below this paragraph for you to check out for yourself. As of the posting of this blog, there are currently 9,372 sidewalk sheds that cover approximately 2,057,848 million linear feet. According to the same website, the average sidewalk shed on the website has been erected for 229 days. Manhattan is the leading borough that holds the most erected scaffolds. In other articles, I read that it is actually cheaper for owners to maintain a sidewalk shed and pay DOB fees versus actually working on the needed façade repairs. As per the Independent Budget Office, the number of sidewalk sheds have tripled in quantity over the past twenty years. The very first 220-foot-long “heavy duty sidewalk shed” that was issued for “remedial repairs” was first erected in Harlem back on April 26, 2006. I find it humorous that the Department of Buildings own building on Broadway in lower Manhattan has had a sidewalk shed ever since 2008. Attempts have been made to crack down on long-standing sidewalk sheds. Like with any government agency, I wish them good luck with that endeavor if an agency’s own building(s) are guilty of the same issue(s)!

ACTIVE SIDEWALK SHED PERMITS-NEW YORK CITY:

https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/buildings/html/sidewalk-shed-map.html

Now that we have covered the history of the sidewalk shed and some basic stats, let’s look at the cost of erecting a shed for a building. Sidewalk sheds cost approximately $90 to $110 per linear foot of shed for the first three months. Once you are past the initial installation cost, it is then roughly 5% or less of the initial installation cost for monthly rent thereafter. The sidewalk shed must extend twenty feet past each end of the perimeter. For example if your building is 100 feet long, you will need 100 feet plus the 20 feet past each end on each side. More often than not, the sidewalk shed will be required to cover all four sides of an entire building. Using this example of a 100 ft. x 100 ft. building, the installation would initially cost $50,400 to $56,000 for the first three months. The monthly rent, starting on month four, would cost the owner roughly $3,024 to $3,360 monthly in order to maintain the sidewalk shed during construction. This cost is not including the permit fees and penalties. The Landmark Preservation Commission, via the DOB, issues alteration permits at a flat rate of $95 for the first $25,000 of work, and $5 for each $1,000 worth of work above $25,000. For new buildings, the LPC charges a fee of 15 cents per square foot for new 1-3 family residences, and 25 cents per square foot for all other new buildings. Sidewalk permits expire a year after being issued or once a contractor’s insurance expires. In order to get an extension on the permit, the project engineer or architect must provide a letter to the Department Of Buildings documenting the condition of the building, the remaining scope of work, and the estimated time left to completion. There are sidewalk shed inspection teams that can issue violations as high as $2,000 per violation if the shed is not properly maintained. Other NYC agencies, such as the Environmental Control Board, can issue violations for sheds as high as $8,000 per violation. If the sidewalk shed extends into the street, the Department of Transportation agency must be involved with permits and potential violations.

My next move is to review some basic building code rules pertaining to sidewalk sheds and share it with you. Let’s pretend that you are a contractor or just a nosey neighbor. The majority of these rules come from NYC building code- Chapter 33: Safeguards During Construction of Demolition, Section 3307. If you have a facade alteration project that is more than 40-feet high or a demolition job at a height more than 25-feet, they both require a sidewalk shed. Obviously, a sidewalk shed must be erected prior to performing your scope of work. The first order of business would be to apply for a ‘Temporary Construction Equipment Permit’. This permit requires to be approved from the DOB. Next is the PW2 work permit application that also needs to be reviewed and approved. Once the permits have been paid, you must post them on the jobsite. They need to be readily available for periodic agency inspections. If necessary, you must also apply for after-hours variance work permits. All drawings for the sidewalk shed and work scope must be reviewed and approved by the Department of Buildings before starting any work as well. This includes the Site Safety Plan that indicates the need for the sidewalk shed and other relevant safety components. The sidewalk shed being erected must be illuminated with either natural or shed lighting. Sidewalk sheds must be at least five feet wide and eight feet in height. Sheds are either light duty (150 lbs./sq. ft.) or heavy duty (300 lbs./sq. ft.) in nature- the type needed depend on the height of the building and storage needs. An illuminated red light must be visible from the street so that the FDNY may know exactly where the standpipe connection can be found. The paint on the wood on the shed must be hunter green in color. It is illegal to post any kind of signage other than the contact information of the general contractor who erected the shed. This information is needed in order to determine who is responsible for shed maintenance and violations. If you see any advertisements posted on sidewalk sheds, the owner can technically be issued with a violation. If you walk along a shed, just know that the diamond shaped windows must be cut into the plywood and placed every 25-feet.

I might note that it’s very important that the sidewalk shed doesn’t hide any street signs. This conflict will get the Department of Transportation involved. The owner and/or general contractor must keep a daily sidewalk shed log of inspections, via a competent person who is on the project. At blind locations, such as an emerging parking garage entrance, a mirror is required to be installed. All sidewalk sheds must be created by a registered design professional. Once the design drawings are approved, the sidewalk shed must be erected exactly as per the drawings. If there are any field conditions that require a deviation from the approved drawings, paperwork from the design professional must be onsite to verify that the modifications are approved. Sidewalk sheds must be inspected and supervised by a qualified person that has been designated by the design professional, permit holder, or a third party that has been approved by both the designer and permit holder. Once fully erected, the qualified person must inspect and provide an inspector report for the shed. The re-inspections must subsequently occur every six months afterwards and after each and every required repair. Sheds must be installed by a team of trained scaffold erectors who have a wide variety of training: 4-hours, 8-hours, 16-hours, and 32-hours for scaffold erection. Any projects that have a site safety manager and a site safety plan require all workers onsite to have a minimum of 4-hours supported scaffold training. This is the minimum training that’s required to step foot on a jobsite and use the scaffold while at work. As I have mentioned in previous safety topics, workers are required to have 40-hr SST training cards while supervisors receive 62-hour SST training cards. Every worker must have the following at a minimum for the 40-hr SST card: 30-hr OSHA, 8-hr fall protection, and 2-hr drug and alcohol training. The 8-hour training is a refresher training course that’s required every four years for workers/supervisors who had previously completed the 32-hour training. Workers are required to complete the 16-hour training while supervisors are required to complete the 32-hour training. Obviously, workers can also complete the 32-hour training. As you can see, workers and supervision must be highly trained before erecting any form of scaffolding here in New York City. The main objective of training is to minimize the amount of deaths of both workers and nearby pedestrians. Once the scope of work has been fully completed, then it’s time to dismantle the sidewalk shed. The crew dismantling the shed must be qualified to do so and the DOB must be notified with a request that was approved beforehand.

I know that it sounds like there is a tremendous amount of red tape for the entire process. The objective is to protect local pedestrians, including global tourists, and workers from harm that can come from falling bricks from high up on a skyscraper. The age range of the average high rise building goes from brand-new to hundreds of years old. Some of the most detailed architecture is on the oldest buildings of the Manhattan skyline. I am not a fan of a ton of rules. However, if the rules didn’t exist, just know that corners would be cut and shortcuts on safety would be made. It’s just human nature to see what a person can get away with not even doing. In the case of protecting millions of humans and safeguarding some of the most expensive real estate on the globe, it’s better to be safe than sorry. This concludes my research and personal experience on this safety topic. If you would like, it’s your turn to share your own thoughts on this safety topic. I’m always interested in different points of view that comes from different people from around the globe. Quora Topic- Meaning Behind “I’m Falling Into You”

Hello Everyone!

We woke up this morning on the right side of the bed and got up for another Tuesday here in a chilly yet sunny New York City. I certainly hope that you get your Christmas shopping done on time this week. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with your beloved family and/or friends this upcoming weekend. I’m still working on sharing some more random blog topics. My latest safety topic of choice is on the history of high visible clothing. If you didn’t check it out, go look for it in my list of blog posts. Before we dive into my attempt at interpreting another common phrase, allow me to share some links and updates on my other projects. My latest goal is to try and get back into releasing some more episodes on my Verbally Disastrous podcast. I may have some free time during the next few holiday weekends. It’s tough when I have different things on my plate during the course of the day. Now that I’ve wrapped up my “Leslie’s book ad”, let’s review this latest Quora topic that I’ve chosen to share with my pal (yes..YOU!). 🙂 We are looking at the meaning behind this common phrase, posed on Quora, that is, “I’m falling into you”. Go ahead and jump right into the posed question and my response below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What is the meaning of ‘I’m falling into you’?”

By Ariana Love

MY RESPONSE:

“Before there is an emotional connection, there needs to be an initial chemistry connection that brings two people together in the first place. Initially, two parties need to have either a strong, mutual physical attraction or have a tremendous amount of things in common. Over time, two people will develop a strong bond and a close emotional connection. Some people claim that they fall in love with people immediately. Meanwhile, other lovers proclaim that this emotional process takes months if not years to achieve. I believe the fast and furious love claims are actually just lust. Those situations are usually hot in temperature and happen very quickly. Then, just as fast and furious as it came in, the fire burns out and so does the relationship. I believe that a slow and steady romantic relationship wins the race. Typically, I hear the phrase, “I’m falling in love with you” when referring to the process of developing strong emotion feelings towards each other. The phrase, “I’m falling into you” is not far from “I’m falling in love with you”. Therefore, I believe that “I’m falling into you” means that one party is expressing that they are falling in love with the other party. They are trying to express that they see themselves developing an emotional connection that becomes deeper and more intense over time. Hopefully, the feelings are mutual. There is nothing worse than one sided love much less the other person expressing indifferent feelings towards the party professing their love. I’ve always heard that it is better to have your partner love you more than you love them if you want longevity. May you have much luck on your life path finding exactly what you seek and deserve. #ConstructionTales #NotAllGirlsPlayWithDolls #VerballyDisastrous”
