I am sharing that I was able to load up Season 1, Episode #5: Hang Time With My Sons onto YouTube. Sometimes it takes me days to get it loaded. I was able to load it after a few attempts on Soundtrap. We spoke about a wide variety of topics that I had previously shared. I added a new exit trailer to the end of the episode as well. I welcome feedback as usual. I have another episode #6 with Tom & Johnny that I am editing to get ready to load onto Spotify & YouTube. hello everyone!

I spent quite a bit of time this week editing Episode #5: Hang Time With My Sons to get it ready to go live on Spotify. I have to still put it on YouTube- sometimes the loading process is frustrating and doesn’t happen right away. I will try to get it on YouTube for those who don’t want to go on Spotify. I have my two sons as special guests: Tom & Johnny. Johnny picked out some topics for us to discuss. I share some funny stories with them on the job back in the day. Tom brings his own things to discuss as well. I tried to water down some of their potty mouths via editing. However, I would be dishonest if I completely watered down the content. Johnny popped up with some wisdom, sometimes I sided with Tom because Jho has an immature viewpoint, and we all shared many laughs during this episode. I have another episode coming with the guys as special guests. I need to carve time to edit the content. I am hoping to have time next week to complete and get it on Spotify. For anyone coming in cold, Tom is my eldest son who is 26-years old and followed in my footsteps to work as an apprentice electrician. Johnny is a sophomore in high school who is turning 16-years old in about two weeks. The energy is always very high when I hang out with both of them. I definitely need to get the Verbally Disastrous podcast on multiple platforms. I have to research how to do that. hello everyone!

I am working on editing and reviewing two new podcast episodes that should be released between today or tomorrow. For the next two podcast episodes, I put on both of my sons, they are Tom and Johnny, to discuss a variety of topics. These podcast episodes will be labeled as: Episodes #5 & #6. I was trying to keep the guys on topic and not wander off the path too long. I hope I didn’t sound overbearing in the process. More importantly, I hope the episodes were entertaining. We will get together and do more podcast episodes very soon. For the next session with my sons, we will add Melissa into the mix. It would be awesome to get Melissa’s son Jimmy into an episode along with Tom and Johnny!

The #5th podcast episode was a discussion between my sons and I about some YouTube videos that Johnny had picked out. I didn’t get a chance to discuss all of the topics I has previously shared. We did try to tackle as much as possible. For the #6th podcast episode, I focused on my son Tom’s path as an apprentice electrician and his journey to become a journeyman. I give fair warning that Episode #6 is a LONG one. Hopefully, it doesn’t feel like it is long and drawn out episode. Here are the questions that I had posed to him during the podcast episode:

1. At what age/point did you want to become an electrician?
2. Name 3 most influential guys you have worked with in the field?
3. How do you like it becoming an electrician?
4. What are your references to construction?
5. How long do you plan to be in the business?
6. Do you expect your brother to come into the business?
7. Do you plan on coming onto the office side of construction?
8. Do you think about owning your own business?
9. What are the benefits about being in construction?
10. What are the disadvantages of being in construction?

I tried to tackle as many points as I could. I didn’t want to disrupt his flow either. I was okay if all questions were not answered. I will admit that Tom and I sipped on some beer while we chatted. As much as I would like to conduct the episode without beer, I am sure it added an interesting dynamic to it. Let us know what you think about the podcast episodes with my sons? What did you like? hello everyone!

I have been trying to dig for early trailblazing women in construction within a wide variety of trades. I recently discussed with another trade sister as to what era produced the earliest women in the trades? We both were initially thinking that women from the 1970’s were the pioneers. While some women started their careers in the 1970’s, I was pleasantly surprised to see key women, such as Edith Clarke, that were straight smashing glass ceilings at GE & AT&T as early as the 1920’s!! For the purpose of this blog post, I am trying to dig into different trades to sift for legacies of early women in construction.

The first licensed master electrician, from Massachusetts, grew up on West Union Street back in the 1950’s. The first Massachusetts female master electrician story began when Deanna Dunlevy was just 16-years old. Ms. Dunlevy was hired by Clyde Meserve to initially just help out around the shop. Deanna soon found out that she had a talent for all things electrical. She had even worked to build a transformer for the high school science fair. While Ms. Dunlevy was taking courses to become a teacher, she was still working part-time as an electrical apprentice for Clyde Meserve Electrical Contractor. Once a bystander made a comment to Ms. Dunlevy that electrical work wasn’t “dignified” work for a lady, she decided to figure out how to become a licensed master electrician. This new sense of direction prompted Ms. Dunlevy to put her college work on hold and pursue her electrical training to become a journeywoman electrician. Ms. Dunlevy completed the required 6,000 hours of her apprenticeship to become a journeywoman electrician. She didn’t stop there- she took classes in Electricity at the Franklin Institute in Boston. Her goal was to finish the course work and sat for three examinations- two written and one was oral. By 1962, Clyde Meserve hired 21-year old Deanna Dunlevy as his first woman licensed master electrician.

I looked up the very first female licensed master plumber in New York City and I discovered 26-year old Josephine Striano from back in 1977. Ms. Striano used to accompany her father on his plumbing business calls as a little girl. When Ms. Striano earned her master plumbing license, she joined the ranks of her father and three brothers within the family business. Ms. Striano received her license after fulfilling rigorous physical qualifications, 7-years of work experience with a master plumber, acing a 4-hr written exam, and testing through a 4-hr practical test. The fields of study include: blueprints, drainage system completion, and plumbing fixture installation. “I think we were more excited about it than she was,” said Jeremiah T. Walsh, Commissioner of Buildings, who delivered the license in a brief private ceremony. “We have always felt we didn’t discriminate against women, and now that we had the first woman licensed master plumber in New York City and also in the state, we were excited. Mrs. Striano didn’t seem to feel it was any big deal.” This is what happens when you belong to an entire family that is of the same trade. There were no barriers in her family, there was a set of expectations that she met just like anyone else in the family.

I admit that I have spent quite a bit of time searching for an early female carpenter. This search has yielded very limited information. I tried to not just limit my search to just the United States. According to the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, the first female carpenter, her name was Margaret Ellings, was initiated into the union back in 1935. However, I do not know for sure in what capacity that Ms. Ellings served as a union member. I stumbled upon Dawn Gladwin, who is serving as Ikea’s first female carpenter from the UK and Ireland. Ms. Gladwin reveals that, “my job involves building podiums and walls in the store – anything to do with carpentry, really. It’s great, I love it. I really like making stuff and really love wood”. Ms. Gladwin also serves as a property guardian where she maintains spaces for reduced rent. Ms. Gladwin sounds crafty where she takes things that would be heading for the trash and re-purposes them to make them a viable product. I plan to ask one of the trade women chat forums that I belong to about some further data on some early women who work in carpentry since data is limited in that trade.

However, I did find an article on the Altit Fort renovation project on an 800-year old fort in the Hunza Valley located in Pakistan. Back in 2001, the Government of Norway funded the renovation project on the fort and conferred the project to the non-profit organization known as, ‘Aga Khan Cultural Service, Pakistan’. The restoration project was carried out by a group of women from a well-known organization known as Ciqum. The Ciqum group was formed in 2003. More than 90 women, aged between 19-40-years old, work in a nearby workshop. Amongst these women is the first female carpenter from Hunza Valley whose name is Amina Bibi. She became a carpenter with the Ciqum organization upon the death of her father. The objective of the Ciqum organization is to provide a means for poor people to achieve a solid means of income. For Ms. Bibi, a job that started as a necessity to pay for living expenses became her passion. Upon completion of the the fort in 2009, it serves as a tourist attraction. Altit Fort is equipped with a guest house and a restaurant. In recognition of the work performed on the fort, the ‘Aga Khan Cultural Service, Pakistan’ received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in the year 2011.

hello everyone!

I had a super busy last week and the past weekend with my family. I have finally been able to put my head up for air to come back and say hello. As promised, in honor of Women’s History Month, I am offering a showcase of some more women. These women serve as a few initial trailblazers as early women in construction. I hope to have more time before the end of the month to showcase some more women. Once complete, I will put together a slideshow presentation and put it on YouTube. I shall see how the rest of the month goes.

For my next female early trailblazer, I am introducing you to the late Edith Clarke. Ms. Clarke was the world’s first female electrical engineer following this career path as a Professor of Electrical Engineering for the University of Texas in Austin. Believe it or not, Ms. Clarke was born in a small farming community in Maryland on February 10, 1883 as one of nine children. Sadly, Ms. Clarke, along with her siblings, became an orphan by the age of 12. Ms. Clarke went to live with her uncle for a short time before moving on to a boarding school. During this time, Ms. Clarke showed high proficiency in mathematics despite having a learning disability with regards to spelling. Ms. Clarke inherited a small amount of money from her parent’s estate that helped her go on to study mathematics and astronomy at Vassar College. Ms. Clarke graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1908. Post college, Ms. Clarke taught mathematics and physics at a girls private school in San Francisco. Some time later, Ms. Clarke moved on to teaching at Marshall College in West Virginia.

By the year 1911, Ms. Clarke enrolled as a civil engineering student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During summer break, Ms. Clarke got an opportunity to work with AT&T research engineer Dr. George Campbell. Ms. Clarke stayed on with AT&T to train a group of female mathematicians who were quickly calculating figures for computing systems until 1918. After some time, Ms. Clarke enrolled in night school for electrical engineering at Columbia University. Ms. Clarke finished her electrical engineering degree at MIT. She also worked at GE and was involved in the first transcontinental telephone line that spanned between New York and California. Each project Ms. Clarke was involved in was very challenging yet extremely enticing to be involved in at the time. Despite these lofty projects, she wanted to return to full-time education. Ms. Clarke’s master’s thesis, was supervised by A. E. Kennelly, and entitled, “behavior of a lumpy artificial transmission line as the frequency is indefinitely increased.”

By 1919, Ms. Clarke earned her MSc. degree as the first women ever to hold these credentials at MIT. Despite her successful tract, Ms. Clarke could not find work as an engineer. By June of 1919, that is when Ms. Clarke was hired by GE to become a “human computer” and supervisor in the Turbine Engineering Department. By 1925, Ms. Clarke received her patent for her first invention, the Clarke Calculator. This tool was the first step towards the “Smart Grid” technology- according to the U.S. Department of Energy. By 1921, Ms. Clarke took a foreign Physics teaching position for Constantinople Women’s College in Turkey for the duration of a year. By 1923, Ms. Clarke achieves her goal of becoming a salaried electrical engineer for GE. In turn, she becomes the first female electrical engineer in the world.

By 1926, Ms. Clarke made a major societal contribution of critical national importance via her paper submission to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE). The paper was entitled, “Steady-State Stability in Transmission Systems-Calculation by Means of Equivalent Circuits or Circle Diagrams”. This submission was the very first by a woman. This data was crucial during a time when transmission lines were becoming longer and longer that required higher electrical loads that could increase the instability of the entire system. Ms. Clarke moved on from GE after 25 years of insightful contributions. Ms. Clarke moved on to teaching back at the University of Texas in Austin. She broke another barrier as the first female electrical engineering professor in the United States until her retirement in 1956. Ms. Clarke was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Society of Women Engineers. Ms. Clarke contributed in a wide variety ways that were recognized when she was alive and after her passing in 1959. In 2015, Ms. Clarke was posthumously inducted into the prestigious National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF).

I was originally trying to put some other ladies in this blog post. However, Edith’s contributions were way too impressive, too grand, and too important for society to pass up any ounce of it. I will have to hunt for some other impressive women in history. The sad part is that I have never ever heard of her before digging for her contributions before now. As I dig for women in different arenas, it will open up my avenues of future discussion within different social circles. The best part of discovering these treasures is finding some kick ass women who didn’t take no for an answer and found a way to make it happen. hello everyone!

I have been sitting in an all day Zoom session for the past two days for an OSHA 502 course. I just have to sit in the class tomorrow and I will fully complete my renewal process. OSHA 502 is a course for authorized trainers who teach OSHA 10 HR & 30 HR courses to students. I must renew on time every 4 years. If you pass your deadline, you would have to take ALL of the courses to get the credentials back. I have had my OSHA 500/502 since 2013 when I first opted to get into safety. I always wanted another avenue to hustle and make money. The 2008 recession was brutal on my family and finances!! As a result, I pursued my MBA about a year into the 2008 recession. I typically like to go to different locations to sit for my OSHA renewals. I flew to Los Angeles back in 2013 so I could first get my initial OSHA 500 trainer credentials. I took my first OSHA 502 renewal in 2017 down in Savannah, Georgia at Georgia Tech. I had a great time and met some good people in the class. I was looking forward to hitting Las Vegas for 2021. However, Covid-19 has really taken the wind out of my sails. I opted to take the course online this year. This option means I must stay within my OSHA region #2. Region #2 covers: New York, New Jersey, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. I am thinking about sitting in an OSHA 502 in the Virgin Islands in the year 2025 when I have to renew every four years. I didn’t have to take the class until July. However, I didn’t want to run into a problem with getting in a class (because of Covid-19) so I erred on the side of caution and did it a few months earlier. This means that I will take the class in 2025 in the winter and can go take advantage of better weather in the Virgin Islands. 🙂 I have never been to the Virgin Islands yet. I have been to San Juan, Puerto Rico almost two years ago in August. I am in love with that city, the fun, the food, and old-fashioned cocktails!! Well, it is time for me to rest so I can be ready for the day’s activities tomorrow. Have a good wrap up of Hump Day (in the camel’s voice from the Geico commercial)!! hello everyone!

My son Tom was streaming games this past weekend. He is happy with my creative projects. I sure as hell push him to work on his creative projects as well. I told him I will try to promote his passion. I advised him to try to make something monetarily with his hobby. I know I have spent a small fortune on his games over the years!! He has been a gamer, as well as my son Johnny, FOREVER it feels like!! I have ZERO interest in video games. They railroad me into it once in awhile for the sake of quality time. I will more than likely be playing video games on Friday night with both of my sons. The goal is to have some discussions and create some podcast episodes. We are all scheduled to hang out together this weekend. I shall see what kind of podcast episodes I will be able to share by the end of the weekend. Check in next week for more podcast episodes with my sons. Those episodes should be amusing. 😛 I have been sharing videos of our dogs on my #VerballyDisastrous YouTube channel.
