Hello Everyone!

Guess who is back to share with you another safety topic? That’s right-your favorite New York female construction worker. 🙂 We’ve landed on another Wednesday that puts us right smack in the middle of another work week, my friend. Let’s make the best of it and finish getting through the week by tackling each day and each task as it pops up as a priority. For this safety topic choice, I want to review the dangers of silica. Before I go off the deep end of the knowledge pool with this topic, I want to share some updates on my various projects. As I stated in my last post, I’m re-releasing it under the name “$ugar Momma Baddie” in my online e-store through Spring and Shopify. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. Check out the revised designs in this blog post down below. So far, I still have the old slogans on the Shopify and Spring e-commerce platforms. I still need to craft the storefronts with the changed logos very soon. My last goal was to work on the revisions over the weekend. However, I fell short with honoring that goal. Therefore, I shall work on it during my down time during the week. I shall offer the “$ugar Momma Baddie” store links for the updated logos on the merchandise when I finally get around to making the revisions. The audio book version for, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” is now available on Audible in audio form as well as hard cover, paperback, e-pub, and on iTunes. The audio book went live back on October 10th within the French, Dutch, U.K., and U.S. markets on Audible. The links for each market can be found further down in this blog post. It’s time to get into the purpose of this safety blog post. I opted to work on investigating the dangers of silica.

You may ask what is silica? Why do I even have to be concerned about it? Silica is a hard, unreactive, colorless compound which occurs as the mineral quartz and as a principal constituent of sandstone and other rocks. Silica is known chemically as the dioxide of silicon SiO2 that’s occurring in crystalline, amorphous, and impure forms: quartz, opal, and sand respectively. Quartz is the most abundant form of crystalline silica. Lesser common forms would be cristobalite and tridymite. Silica is a chemical compound that has been formed from both oxygen and silicon atoms. This chemical compound appears in two forms; hazardous crystalline, or non-hazardous amorphous. It is crystalline silica that causes all the trouble for workers around the globe. Breathing in dust from silica-containing materials can lead to a health condition that’s known as ‘silicosis’. Silica dust particles become trapped within the lung tissue that causes inflammation and scarring. The particles also reduce the lungs’ ability to take in oxygen which is absolutely essential to maintain life. Silicosis is a health condition that develops over time after constant exposure over 10-years or more. However, the disease can occur much more quickly after heavy exposures. Silicosis results in permanent lung damage and is a progressive, debilitating, and sometimes fatal disease. Sadly, there is no cure for silicosis and it could even be required to get a lung transplant. Workers who have been exposed to silica and those who have silicosis are also at increased risk of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a contagious and potentially life-threatening infection. Other diseases that morph as a result of silica exposure include: lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), kidney disease, or an autoimmune disorder. How do you even know if you have silicosis? Symptoms of silicosis may include the following:

  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain

Your next question should be where can silica be found? Who are the people that are most exposed to silica? Silica is an abundantly natural material that can be found in various locations on Earth. Crystalline silica can be stumbled upon within: rock, stone, soil, clay, gravel, and sand. This natural compound can also discovered in concrete, brick, mortar, and other construction materials. Quartz is the most common form where crystalline silica is derived from. Quartz dust is known as, ‘respirable crystalline silica’. This means it can be taken into the body by merely breathing it in. Silica is present within building and landscaping materials such as: roof slate, bricks, tiles, concrete, glass, ceramics, and plastic composites. Silica is a pesky, lingering visitor during many common construction tasks such as: excavating, mining, quarrying, and tunneling. Miners often work to orchestrate an explosion of high-silica-content rock while in the midst of burrowing into the dark depths of the Earth. Once it becomes airborne, it wafts through the ventilation system where miners all take their breathes while burrowing and blasting underground. Masons are also within another industry that is exposed to high quantities of silica while handling cement and the dust that is laden with silica once the cement powder is disturbed. Masonry tasks, such as scabbling or concrete cutting, work to introduce silica into the workers lungs via the air. Silica dust is super fine and can easily be picked up once it becomes airborne. Silica is 100 times smaller than a grain of sand. Because of how small the particles are, say approximately 5 micrometers in diameter, the tiny micro grains are transported into the lungs. Once silica is transported to the lungs, it works to permanently scar and damage the lung tissue. In addition to miners and masons, here is a list of the other industries where exposure is possible:

  • engineers (ex: oil and gas engineers)
  • farmers
  • workers breaking, crushing, grinding or milling material containing silica dust
  • sand blasting or casting
  • paving, surfacing or cement finishing
  • bricklaying
  • demolition work
  • road construction
  • stone masonery
  • mineral ore-treating processes
  • manufacturer workers: of glass, ceramics, brick, concrete, tile, metals, or machinery

Within the United States, approximately 2.2 million workers were exposed to silica dust in the workplace. In China, is the top nation since it jumps up to 23 million workers who are impacted by silica exposure. India is the country that’s in second place with 10 million workers who inherited health problems from the workplace. It is estimated that over 500 construction workers are believed to die from exposure to silica dust every year here in the United States. What exactly happens to the lungs other than inhaling these tiny particles? Once the very fine silica dust nanoparticles are breathed in, they go deep into the lung where it is attacked by the immune system. This activation of the immune system causes swelling and a hardening of the lung tissue- known as fibrosis. Fibrosis causes the lung tissue to become permanently scarred and it can no longer be able to function properly. Depending on the duration and exposure levels, the process can happen quickly within a few years or slowly over a 10-20 year period of time. According to OSHA.gov, refer to OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153 (d)(2)(v) that offers guidance on the exact limits of exposure and maximum time of exposure to crystalline silica. This OSHA section applies to all occupational exposures to respirable crystalline silica in construction work, except where employee exposure will remain below 25 micrograms per cubic meter of air (25 μg/m3) as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) under any foreseeable conditions. Meanwhile, the mandatory limit for silica dust exposure in Australia is 0.05mg/m3. It’s reported to be as low as 0.025 in some states of Canada. An independent occupational hygienist is recommended to be tasked with monitoring the air particulates if exposure if a business is believed to expose employees to more than what’s normally allowed. Silica testing equipment needs to meet OSHA ID-142; NMAM 7500 analytical method qualifications. Nowadays, small personal air monitors are available on the market to protect the average worker. Be sure to do your homework prior to making that purchase.

Now that we know what silica is and how it impacts the body, let’s look at the industry standard to control exposure. Industry professionals use what is known as the ‘hierarchy of risk control’. These are a series of controls that range from low to high reliability. The control measure with the highest rate of reliability would be to totally eliminate the hazard. If you remove the material with silica in it, you remove the hazard completely. Yes, I’m aware that this magic pill of elimination is not always available on the jobsite. If elimination is not remotely possible, the next control measure to attempt to substitute a lesser hazard than what is currently in place. The third layer would be engineer controls. This means that team will engineer a control system in an effort to reduce the exposure of silica. The fourth layer of control would be in the form of administrative controls. This includes offering signs and instructions for workers in an effort to provide data and reduce the worker’s level of exposure. The fifth and lowest reliability comes in the form of personal protective equipment. The employer offers the employee a series of protective equipment to arm the worker in an effort to limit exposure. Workers receive face masks and gloves to be used during their shift in an effort to lessen exposure to silica. If you are a worker on the jobsite, it is wise to save this hierarchy of risk control to serve as a guide if you are experiencing high levels of silica exposure. No one is going to be your advocate quite like your own self. Therefore, you need to do the homework in an effort to arm yourself with the right tools so that you can enjoy your senior years. Sadly, before I got into the role of management, I didn’t do much research on the effects of environmental hazards. I walked into work essentially blind since getting the job done was on the front burner. As a widowed mother, I was more worried about staying on the jobsite as long as possible so that I could put food on the table and keep a roof over our heads. If your focus is the same, then you get where I’m coming from during my worker bee years with the tools. Try to learn at least one new thing per week that could aid in your longevity on this planet. Over time, it will cause you to be slowly become more aware of your surroundings.

By this point in this blog post, we have learned much more about silica. I do have some basic knowledge on the topic, via forced silica awareness courses that I had to take. I’m posing this next question. How do we drill even deeper into this topic? Let’s look into exactly what air monitors can be used on the jobsite. If you are on the jobsite and the employer is not willing to monitor the contaminants in the air, how do you arm yourself in a cost effective way? So far, we have learned that when an independent air monitor contractor comes in, they are looking to gather and record the contaminants during an 8-hour period of time. If the report comes back with high levels of silica, then the hierarchy of risk controls need to be implemented. The air is then re-monitored at time intervals that are based upon the initial report findings. According to OSHA.gov (https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/2019-03-21), the time intervals are at least every 3 months after the first air sample. These mandatory intervals shall continue until the tests yield lower than the (PEL) permissible exposure limits. It appears that the “Hanna Instruments HI 770 Checker HC Handheld Colorimeter, For Silica High Range” is an air monitor that retails on Amazon for $59.95 with favorable reviews (and some sarcastic ones). It claims to be plus or minus 5% accuracy. For water monitoring, a Tap Score water monitoring kit retails on their website for $55.00. You purchase a water test kit on their website at: https://mytapscore.com/ and they will send you all that is needed for collection. After collecting a water sample, you ship it to their lab, and they will be send a report of the test results. Apparently, wells can get contaminated with silica and under certain conditions, that also poses as a health hazard. A number of silicon compounds, such as silicon halogens, are corrosive and extremely toxic. Silicon tetra chloride is an eye irritant, and may also cause breathing problems and skin irritation. In drinking water only silicic acid is present, which is relatively safe. I’m truly thankful that ingesting silicon doesn’t cause stomach cancer or other health problems.

It took a little bit of digging in order to find the equipment used for air monitoring. I found a PowerPoint presentation from a Salt Lake City based testing lab called ALS Limited on YouTube. I shall provide the link down below in case you want to drill into more details than what I’m offering in this blog post. Air testing is done with different types of cyclones. Here are five different types of ISO 7708 compliant cyclones: 1) SKC GS-3 Cyclone 2.75 L/min 2) Dorr Oliver Cyclone 1.75 L/min 3) SKC Aluminum Cyclone 2.5-2.8 L/min 4) BGI GK 2.69 Cyclone 4.2 L/min 5) Higgens-Dewell 2.2 L/min. Testing has been going on and evolving for the last 40-years. According to the presentation, the cyclone favored to be used today SKC GS-3 Cyclone 2.75 L/min. The testing cyclone uses a combination of gravity and air flow to capture and separate the air contaminants. Once the air intake brings in the air, the heavier particles drop to the bottom toward the grid pot. The lighter particles rise up toward the PVC filter cassette. Once the monitor is done with the sample, the PVC filter gets removed from the test machine. The filter within the PVC filter cassette is what gets sent to a lab for further analysis. It’s important to keep the cyclone in a vertical plane for the entire time. Depending on your objective, there are both disposable and reusable filters available for air sampling. The costs of these filters vary as per the unit used ($80+). The battery life on these cyclones air monitors will last for approximately 12-hours. Even if the test results don’t yield much silica, they encourage the testing of respirable dust since that still presents as a health hazard for workers. Whatever lab you choose, just make sure that they provide crystalline silica analysis by NIOS method 7500 and OSHA ID 142 using x-ray diffraction. Additionally, ensure that they are accredited by the (AIHA) American Industrial Hygiene Association as per OSHA Appendix A 29CFR 1910.1053 guidelines. I had a discussion on silica with my fellow site safety managers today. We all started out in construction with working with the tools in a variety of capacities. One thing that is the general consensus- we didn’t worry about our health as young workers. We are all aware of the risks taken and the fact that we may or may not encounter health problems, within the next 10-15 years, as a result our lack of concern for future health problems. We spoke about having no desire to wear the extra PPE since it serves as both a burden and a distraction while working. If you are a young construction worker, hopefully you will think about this discussion more than we did. We are not going to live forever and avoid the almighty ‘dirt nap’. However, you can at least try to minimize the health problems that will come at an advanced age.

Safety Topic Of Today: The History Of The Hard Hat

Hello Everyone!

I’m honored to share with you yet another safety topic from my jobsite. As a site safety manager, I’m basically an adult babysitter. I work with my team to protect people from harming themselves via not taking steps to protect themselves. I always tell the workers that I want to see them go home in the exact same condition as they came in this morning. We’ve made it again to where we are wrapping up another work week, my friend. For this safety topic choice, I want to review the history of wearing hard hats on North American jobsites within the last 100-years. Before I make a splash with this topic, I want to share some updates on my various projects. As I stated in my last post, I’m re-releasing it under the name “Sugar Momma Baddie” in my online e-store through Spring and Shopify. The latest goal is to work on the revisions over the weekend. I shall offer the “$ugar Momma Baddie” store links for the updated logos on the merchandise when I finally get around to making the revisions. The audio book version for, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” is now available on Audible in audio form as well as hard cover, paperback, epub, and on iTunes. The audio book went live back on October 10th within the French, Dutch, U.K., and U.S. markets on Audible. The links for each market can be found further down in this blog post.

It’s time to get into the purpose of this safety blog post. I opted to work on investigating the history of the hard hat. Each year, it is estimated that 6 million hard hats are sold in the United States. The very first head protection was released in 1889 in the form of a leather miner’s hat. Just like the first steel toe shoe, the military was the birthing place where head protection evolved into a hardened structure. The U.S. Navy commissioned E.D. Bullard Co. with the task of creating a protective hat that resembles the WWI “brodie” or “doughboy” helmet. Shipbuilders used to cover their hats with tar to harden them and create a layer of protection. Wearing a military helmet saved many soldiers from flying shrapnel and debris along with a hail of rapid fire ammunition. A young lieutenant, who served in the U.S. Army’s cavalry, first saw the effectiveness of the military helmet for soldiers during his time while serving in World War I. He was looking to use his war time knowledge so that he may design an even better hard hat. By 1919, Edward W. Bullard returned home to the family business, known as E.D. Bullard Co., in San Francisco and opted to develop a hard hat for civilians. Today, the main headquarters for E.D. Bullard Co. is in Cynthiana, Kentucky. E.D. Bullard Co. is now one of the leading manufacturers of personal protective equipment on a global scale. The family business was founded by the inventor’s father Edward D. Bullard back in 1898. This family business started out as a manufacturer who created carbide lamps and other equipment for miners in California, Nevada, and Arizona. After returning from the war, Edward Jr. began developing ideas for affordable safety headgear that would effectively work to protect the miners. This new means of personal protective equipment was first known as the “hard boiled hat”. This head protection was made out of heavy, duck canvas and leather and it was coated with shellac. This civilian hard hat version needed to be smaller and lighter than the military version due to miners working in small underground locations. One hat was made of Bakelite which was an early form of plastic. The early hard boiled hats were rather heavy and made out of steel.

Edward Jr. had crafted and patented 13 different designs for his hard hat creations that were designed for different industry applications. The second hard hat patent in 1928 was the introduction of inner suspension within the hard hat that was actually awarded by 1930. Hard hats were not required to be worn until the creation of Hoover Dam, formerly known as Boulder Dam, back in 1931. Later on, the chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge required workers to wear hard hats during the erection of the bridge by 1933. The engineer was highly concerned over falling rivets that would serve as a hazard for workers during the bridge erection process. By 1938, the hard hats of that era were engineered to be lighter in weight since they were then made out of aluminum. The downside is that these hard hats are a natural conductor of electricity. By the 1940’s, fiberglass hard hats were introduced to the market in an effort to combat high heat issues. The first thermoplastic hard hat was released by 1952. The hard hat composition began transitioning to polyethylene material by the 1960’s. The MSA-V Guard design, released in 1962, is still in use today. By 1982, E.D. Bullard Co. introduced yet again a redesigned helmet that incorporated a non-slip, ratchet suspension with a knob in the back for adjusting the snugness around the worker’s dome. All safety helmets have been made out of plastic ever since the early 2000’s. The more modern plastic hard hat became known as the “3000 R”. The 3000 R was produced from polyethylene plastic. This latest round of technology produced a hard hat that is lightweight, durable, easy to mold, and non-conductive to electricity. This polyethylene plastic hard hat was even treated with an ultra-violet inhibitor. This extra safety feature helped the hats weather the outdoor work environment. A modern helmet today is sold at a price range between $15 to $20 dollars each. Once released to be purchased, the original “Bullard Hard Boiled Hat” was listed for less than $3. When adjusted for modern inflation, the very first hard hat cost roughly $45.

E.D. Bullard Co. took on field feedback in an effort to re-design the hard hat even further. They went to work and designed the vented hard hat, known as the S62, that allows for air flow inside the hard hat while still offering the best protection. These hard hat designs must comply with OSHA regulations that also require the use of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) compliant head protection (ANSI Z89.1-2014). The OSHA rule (29 C.F.R. 1926.100) states that employers must provide head protection equipment that meets or exceeds the industry consensus standard ANSI Z89.1. I have never worn the hard hat with the ventilation feature. However, I have seen some guys on my project have that air flow vent feature on their hard hats. From what it sounds like, via field feedback and online reviews, the ventilation feature does provide a noticeable difference in the summer. There is a general color code that indicate job roles out on the jobsite. Yellow is used for general laborers and contractors. White (or sometimes black) indicates supervisors and managers. Inspectors and new workers wear green hard hats and visitors are often given blue ones. Despite having a set industry standard color code in existence, it doesn’t mean contractors follow it at all. After the majority of my experiences, most managers indeed wear white hard hats. However, contractors will often choose a hard hat color that goes with the company brand color(s). For example, I’ve worn a blue hard hat some projects as an electrician. However, I’ve also worn a red EJ Electric hard hat since their brand was predominantly red and Verde Electric since green was the predominant brand color. There are two types of hard hats along with three classes of head protection. Additionally, there are three types of adjustments for hard hats. ANSI Type I hard hat works to protect against blows to the top of the head and meets vertical impact and penetration requirements. The ANSI Type II hard hat works to protect against blows to the top and side of the head and meet both vertical and lateral impact and penetration requirements. Type I hard hats are predominantly used within the United States while Type II are predominantly used in Canada. Here are the three classes of hard hats along with their main function in regards to protecting the worker from momentary brushes with electricity:

  • Class E (electrical) provides protection to withstand 20,000 volts
  • Class G (general) provides protection to withstand 2,200 volts
  • Class C (conductive) does not provide protection from electricity

The standard type and class of hard hat that’s used on the average jobsite is the Class C hard hat for workers who are not exposed to electricity. However, the average electrician here in the United States would be wearing a Type I, Class E hard hat. It’s also suggested for the hard hat to be blue in color. Hard hats come in a wide variety of styles with the intention of providing protection within different work environments. However, the two most popular are the “Cap” and “Full Brim” style. The cap style has a front brim with a rolled edge that’s intended to allow water to drain off the bill. The full brim style is a wider brimmed hat that gives eye protection from sunlight and even rain while working outdoors. As with any product on the market, they come with a wide variety of accessories. These accessories are intended to provide comfort and ease with various applications: light visors, face shields, ear muffs, mirrors, liners, chin straps, cameras, pagers, radios, neck shade protection, and lights. There are three different types adjustments on the hard hat that include: ratchet, pin lock, and one touch. Obviously, the worker must visually check the hard hat for damage and take it out of service immediately if it is damaged in any way. The recommended life span of a hard hat is five years. I’ve worn a bandana under my hard hat for many years to protect my forehead. It works to protect my forehead from pimples that can surface along the suspension strap that connects the hard hat to my forehead. I’ve used those soft liners that snap onto the suspension strap. However, they get dirty and laden with sweat very easily. I’d rather stick with my pink or blue “do-rag” instead. On the project that I’m currently on, the workers for the general contractor all wear the safety helmets in lieu of a traditional hard hat. They have the ability to accept the various accessories such as a face shield, ear protection, and the chin strap. The crew literally look like they are wearing a fancy bicycle helmet. Despite looking ridiculous, it does makes sense to have the chin strap in order to keep the hard hat on the worker during stressful moments. I’ve never been a fan of wearing a hard hat since it works very well to trap the heat on your head to within the hard hat. Additionally, every day is a bad hair day after wearing a hard hat. When you work on high rise projects, you have to tether your hard hat to your clothing. In the event the hard hat falls off and drops from a high elevation, it can injure a passerby who is walking on the ground level. I wear a tether on my hard hat since I’m walking around on a 20-story scaffold within an occupied residential complex. I cannot imagine the long-lasting mental anguish of hurting or even killing an innocent bystander with my personal protective equipment.

Safety Topic Of Today: What Is A Safety Shoe?

Hello Everyone!

I’m back with another safety topic here on this partly cloudy Friday. We endured rain and high winds last night in the streets of New York City. Thankfully, it is much nicer today. I have a varsity football game for my son and his team the Carmel Rams tonight. They are again undefeated in their division this year. How was your work week for you this past week, my friend? I want to review the requirement, on some construction projects, of wearing safety composite toe shoes. Before I dive into this topic, I want to share some updates on my various projects. As I stated in my last post, I’m re-releasing it under the name “$ugar Momma Baddie” in my online e-store through Spring and Shopify. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. So far, I still have the old slogans on the Shopify and Spring e-commerce platforms. I still need to craft the storefronts with the changed logos very soon. I shall offer the “$ugar Momma Baddie” store links for the updated logos on the merchandise when I make the revisions. The audio book version for, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” is now available on Audible and other distribution chains. The audio book went live on October 10th in the French, Dutch, U.K., and U.S. markets on Audible. The links for each market can be found further down in this blog post. Now, let’s get into the meat and potatoes of this safety topic. I’m so not a fan of having to wear either steel toe or composite toe work boots. Oftentimes, they feel narrow, heavy, and are extremely hard to break in and make comfortable. After an 8-hr shift, it feels like you were wearing ankle weights all damn day. I have a new pair of Red Wings Irish Setters and they are still slightly uncomfortable to wear longer than I absolutely have to wear them. I always go home and to work in my sneakers. My Irish Setters are loaded with pretty much all available safety features. My old, black Timberland Pros are my preferred work boot to wear. I actually just bought a brand-new pair of grey Timberland Pros. The downside is that they are not equipped with a safety toe. I can only imagine how heavy logging boots are since they must be made with cut resistant material to withstand a hit from a chainsaw. Logging boots are required by OSHA to be cut resistant under standard 29 CFR 1910.266(d)(1)(v). The average logger must have lean, mean legs for days after wearing them daily.

You may ask as to why are “hardened tip” safety shoes even required? The goal is to protect your toes in the event that an extremely heavy item drops on a worker’s foot. The other danger is that this sheet of metal that’s in your boot serves as a guillotine for all of the digits upon impact on the foot. Many, many moons ago, the first protective boots were wooden boots, called “sabots”. A sabot can be defined as a kind of simple shoe that was shaped and hollowed out from a single block of wood. This heavy footwear style was traditionally worn by French and Breton peasants. These “wooden boats” worked to protect workers from falling objects. I can only imagine how heavy and uncomfortable these shoes must have felt on the feet after a long day in the field! Sabots protected farmers on the field from sharp objects and protected toes in case a horse or cow stepped on them. During the early industrial revolution, workers used sabots to destroy machinery by throwing them into the gears of factories to stop production. The word sabotage came from this activity. The first attempt at steel toe protective technology was reported to come from Germany back in 1930. This very first boot was intended for industrial workers and ended up being geared for the military. Based upon my research, it is unclear as to exactly who actually invented the steel toe boot concept. Believe it or not, the non-commissioned German soldiers had metal caps placed in their boots. During my research, I learned that the footwear company Red Wing Shoes, based in Red Wing, Minnesota, was founded by Charles H. Beckman back in 1905. Within 10-years of starting up, Red Wing Shoes was producing 200,000 pairs of boots each year. Over the years, I’ve owned quite a few pairs of Red Wings. I was on a deck job where I was working in the basement with the brick layers. We were wading in a few inches of water all day in the basement. To my pleasant surprise, my socks stayed dry all day! I’ve kept my Red Wings and went to a cobbler and had them re-soled. They last for a long time despite the rough conditions the boots are subjected to each day. Red Wing Shoes became the preferred manufacturer of American soldier during World War I. Red Wing Shoes was the first company to mass manufacture steel toe boots for American soldiers during World War II.

Prior to World War II, it was actually cheaper to just pay off a family after a fatality and then get a new worker versus introducing any personal protective equipment onsite (known for short as PPE). Imagine how rough it was for the families of workers who had gotten injured while at work during the Industrial Revolution with no PPE and no laws in place to protect the worker? The passing of various U.S. legislation all worked to put the average company on the hook for compensation after worker accidents. Wisconsin was the first state to pass the Wisconsin Worker’s Compensation Act back in 1911. By 1948, Mississippi was the last state to get on board with protecting their workers via compensation laws. Once legislation was passed and a company becomes liable, it’s time to get worker’s compensation insurance to offset the cost of accidents. The insurance representatives then collectively work to force the entire industry to reduce the likelihood of accidents through the introduction of safer practices and protection for workers. If a company chooses to not work safer, then it’s a guarantee that company insurance premiums will soar to new heights. When it boils down to it, companies see workers as a financial liability. Therefore, they are only making the work environment safer to keep costs down. Protecting the worker is a side effect of keeping worker compensation costs down. No matter the reason, it is still much easier and safer to work within dangerous environments than ever before in history. Over the years, I used to hear about the various construction urban legends while at work. Seasoned workers said that unfortunate workers who fell in during a 1930’s concrete pour for a bridge were not rescued. The deceased worker drowned in concrete and became a part of the foundation since retrieving the body was impossible. However, I struggle to find an actual published story on these urban legends.

Back when I served in the military in the U.S. Navy Seabees, I was required to wear steel toe boots with my uniform. The steel toe adds a significant amount of weight to the feet. We had to run at least 5 miles per day while wearing them. I feel entirely too old to attempt to do that today. Thankfully, safety work boots have shifted away from steel toe and morphed into other material compositions. I discovered this website, known as Justia Patents, that listed some patents for engineered safety footwear. The modern material that’s used to create safety footwear, via next level technology include: plastic, composite fiber, thermoplastic, neoprene, polyaramid or aramid (Kevlar), graphite or engineering polymer, vulcanized rubber, plastic resin, glass-filled polyurethane, aluminum, and fiber-filled plastic resin. The timeframe for these submitted safety shoe patents on this website ranges from 1974 to 2000. I’m unsure if newer patents have hit the market after the year 2000. However, it makes sense that new patents exist since the goal is to always become the next big product. The term “composite” means a blend of multiple material sources that work together to form a strong compound that’s used to protect the foot. Modern safety shoes have safety features such as toe and metatarsal guards, electric hazard, electro static discharge, puncture resistant, and slip resistant. A key factor to keep in mind is that once the surface has been compromised, it can no longer guarantee against future hazards. Modern safety shoes have a big job to provide protection since each foot contains 26 bones for support and 38 joints for movement. As you can see, you have quite a few bones and joints in your foot that require protection. For some subcultures, as early as the 1960’s, steel toe boots were considered fashionable. In response to this fashion trend, shoe brands such as Dr. Martens and Grinders actually became popular with skinheads. Brand popularity grew due to the sturdiness of the steel toe boots. This was largely due to the fact that the boot could be considered dangerous in fighting and were used as weapons. Later on in the ’80s and ’90s, other punk and Rivethead subcultures adopted the use of steel toe footwear as well.

I recently discovered, during my research for this safety topic, that there are two major categories of work related foot injuries. The first major foot injury category includes foot injuries from punctures, crushing, sprains, and lacerations. This first round of major foot injuries account for 10 percent of all reported disabling injuries. The second major foot injury group consists of injuries that result from slips, trips, and falls. This second foot injury category accounts for 15 percent of all reported disabling injuries. Your feet are laden with a series of blood vessels, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. Let’s not forget that your entire body weight rides on those feet while being out and about during the day. This is why foot injuries are so painful and debilitating when they occur. Foot injuries remind you exactly how important your feet are for your body. The legs and feet get the least amount of rest during injury recovery since going to the bathroom and the fridge is the bare minimum requirement to survive. The Occupational Safety & Health Act, first passed back in 1970, along with other types of safety legislation all work together to force your employer to pitch in and help protect your little piggies from being crushed while on the jobsite. Safety equipment, such as safety shoes, shall comply with American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ANSI Z-41-1991, “American National Standard for Personal Protection-Protective Footwear” [62 FR 40141, July 15,1997]. For many employees, safety shoes are not provided by the employer and must be purchased by the employee. In the past, buying safety boots are considered to be a high expense of obtaining employment. Due to modern technology, you do not absolutely have to wear safety shoes with the toe guards imbedded within the shoe. Retail vendors carry toe guards that can be slipped over your work boot and even a tennis shoe. Some have a rubber strap that stretches over your heel. I actually just purchased a toe guard that has an adjustable strap that goes over the back of the heel. I’ve even seen rubberized slip on covers that slide over the bottom half of your boot on Amazon as well. This add-on safety feature costs between $25-50 online. Therefore, you have no excuse to not protect your own damn feet. 😛

Just Released On Audible!! Audio Version Of Not All Girls Play With Dolls!!

Audio Credit: Not All Girls Play With Dolls-Now On Audible!!

Hello Everyone!

Yes, we have indeed made it to another hump day Wednesday here on the streets of New York City. How is your week going, my friend? As I stated in my last post, I’ve been very involved working on some of my creative projects. I’m in the process of making some changes to my product line’s name. I’m re-releasing it under the name “Sugar Momma Baddie” in my online e-store through Spring and Shopify. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. So far, I still have the old slogans on the Shopify and Spring e-commerce platforms. I still need to craft the storefronts with the changed logos tomorrow or Friday. I shall offer the store links for the updated logos on the merchandise when I make the revisions. I’ve been actively working on trademarking my brand and I ran into some minor hurdles. It appears that using, “I’m My Own $ugar Daddy” will have a high probability of being rejected since parts of the phrase have already been trademarked. Therefore, I’m going with “$ugar Momma Baddie” instead. I find the name to be humorous in nature. The slogan is the following, “I’m Proud To Make My Own $Money$”. The book and t-shirt line are indeed my solo projects. I’m also working on team projects with my business partner. I REALLY like having a motivated partner!! I can only do so much solo in the course of a day. My partner Nick and I are also in the process of launching our new website, “Safety First Training Academy” that can be found at http://www.safetyfirstllc.net/. As of now, the website is still under construction and we are in the preparation process. As you have seen, I’ve added some construction safety related topics to this blog for your reading pleasure. The main purpose of adding them here is intended to be also available on the Safety First Training Academy website. I do plan to return to cherry picking some Quora topics in the future when the needs of my other projects slow down. As I had shared in previous posts, I dedicated about 10 to 14 days of my down time towards editing the audio book version for, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls”. After tons of painful hours of editing, the book has been approved on my end and it spent a few weeks under ACX review. I went to look yet again for the millionth time to check and see if it was approved yet. I’m proud to say that the audio book went live on October 10th!! Hooray!! It is now available on Audible for purchase in multiple markets!! I also have the audio version for, “Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey To Become An Electrician” in the French, Dutch, U.K., and U.S. markets on Audible. The links for each market can be found down below in this blog post. Here are the links for “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” that can now be found on Audible within the same (4) global markets:

I thank you for checking out my blog post on the NEW RELEASE of my, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” audio book announcement today!! You are highly appreciated. I’m looking forward to my very first sale of this audio book!! I think I started the children’s book project back in 2015. Yes, I intend to write another children’s book in the future. I have the concept in my mind already. I intend to write about a young boy who grows up with his momma after losing his dad in an accident. My eldest son Tom is the source of inspiration for this book. I shall share more details of the book when I start that project and pick an illustrator. Don’t forget to follow me at leslie_m_jasper on Tik Tok or Verbally Disastrous on YouTube. Share your feedback on my content down in the comment section at the bottom of the blog post. If you appreciate listening to podcasts, I encourage you to review my last (8) podcast episodes that are listed down below from The Verbally Disastrous Podcast, via links for Spotify & YouTube down below. If you are into reading on a Kindle, check out my newest short story release that belongs to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library short story series on Amazon down below. My last short story #11 is entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. The previous short story is #10 is entitled, “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. If anyone has read any of my other previous short stories, let me know your thoughts? Feel free to go ahead and check out the many links for my book #ConstructionTales down below. Sadly, it is now time to pry yourself from your screen so that you can finish up your Wednesday work/school/home tasks so that you can go home and unwind for the rest of the day. My hat goes off to you if you are hitting that second job and/or night shift! I actually like night shift since I can sleep in and I don’t have small children anymore to wake me up. However, I shall stick with the day shift for the time being until I’m faced with a night shift in the future. I wish you a great morning/afternoon/evening on your side of the globe and a restful or productive day!

I shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.

Pending Review: Audio Version Of Not All Girls Play With Dolls On Audible

Audio Credit: Not All Girls Play With Dolls-Coming Soon To Audible

Hello Everyone!

We made it to another hump day Wednesday here in New York City. How are you doing, my friend? I wish you nothing but success and smooth sailing on your life journey. Thankfully, the weather has cooled down significantly compared to the summer. If you are in the sun, it’s rather warm. However, if you are in the shade, it’s rather chilly. However, I’m totally cool with the current sweater weather! The last time I wore a sweater was back in May. My thoughts are with the folks sheltering in light of a Category 4 hurricane that is ongoing down in Florida. As of recently, I’ve been busy working on some of my creative projects. I’m truly honored to be sharing my new release of the “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” online e-store through Spring. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. So far, I’ve made them available on Shopify and Spring e-commerce platforms. I’m sharing with you that all I’ve made some brand changes with the logo name. I’ve been actively working on trademarking my brand. I really like having a partner who is as motivated as I am. I do plan to return to cherry picking some Quora topics in the future. For the past week, I’ve been working on the audio book version for, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls”. I’m declaring that the recording process was the easiest while the editing process was the most painful part!! Actually, painful is an understatement!! Regardless of the format, I could never survive as an editor. After tons of hours of editing, the book has been approved on my end and it is currently under review via ACX. It takes about 10-days for ACX to review. Once approved, it will be available on Audible for purchase in multiple markets. I have the audio version for, “Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey To Become An Electrician” in the French, Dutch, U.K., and U.S. markets on Audible. Safety Topic Of Today: The Dangers Of Asbestos

Hello Everyone!

Welcome back to another Monday that launches yet another work week here in New York City. Thankfully, the weather has cooled down significantly and they are serving pumpkin lattes in coffee shops everywhere here. October is my favorite month of the entire year. I absolutely love running through haunted houses and graveyards, with my sons Tom and Johnny, in order to find the scariest Halloween venue out there. I sincerely wish you nothing but the best luck and much success along your personal path. For today’s blog post, I’m discussing another safety topic on the dangers of asbestos. Before I proceed even further with the asbestos topic, I might as well share with you my latest Amazon promotions for my e-books. My first adult e-book entitled, “Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey To Become An Electrician” is now scheduled to be in the Kindle Countdown Deal, within the United States market, from September 8th-15th. My first children’s e-book entitled, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” and my edited teen version entitled, “Construction Tales: A Young Person’s Guide To Accomplish Anything In Life” just wrapped up their Kindle Countdown promotions. I shall share when they are enrolled in new discount promotions. As a reminder, the promotions only applies to the e-book versions. I’m truly honored to be sharing my new release of the “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” online e-store through Spring. I’m working on making it also available on Shopify, Printful, and other e-commerce platforms. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. Check out my two design concepts for the product line along with the Spring store links down below this safety blog post. As I have also shared a few times before, we are in the process of launching my new website, “Safety First Training Academy” that can be found at http://www.safetyfirstllc.net/. As of now, the website is still under construction and we are in the preparation process. I’m going to add some construction safety related topics to this blog for your reading pleasure. The purpose of adding them here is that they will also be available on the Safety First Training Academy website. I vow to go return to cherry picking some Quora topics in the future. I’m very much looking forward to the future success with our various business ventures!!

For this blog post, I’m going to discuss the hazards associated with handling asbestos. I know, as an apprentice back in the 1990’s, I walked all over pipes that were covered with asbestos. I was even involved in popping up some tiles that contained asbestos at work. Handling asbestos was something that was mentioned in passing at the coffee break table while at work. However, it didn’t seem to be as much of a recognized hazard compared to how it is today. You might ask me what is asbestos? What is the big deal about it? Asbestos is a heat-resistant, fibrous silicate mineral that can be woven into fabrics or integrated in other materials. Until the 1800s, people mainly used asbestos to make fireproof cloth in small amounts. By the time of of the surge of the Industrial Revolution, asbestos became widely used for steam engines and as insulating materials for pipes. The explosion of the Industrial Revolution caused a development of technology that aided in easily mining the mineral along with infusion of asbestos into materials. An even deeper demand for asbestos came as a result of the World War ship building industry as well as the post war building boom that followed. This highly sought after asbestos mineral can be mined from all over the world. It was once mined from various parts of North America. Today, it’s main exporters are: Russia, Kazakhstan, and China. There are (6) different types of asbestos. Most of them have a straight, jagged shape with the last type that has curly characteristics. Here are the names of the (6) different types of asbestos minerals:

  • Crocidolite
  • Amosite
  • Anthophyllite
  • Tremolite
  • Actinolite
  • Chrysotile

As stated previously, the U.S. military used asbestos extensively, from the 1930’s to the 1970’s, on Navy ships. This extensive use of asbestos gave Navy veterans a higher chance of exposure to asbestos related diseases. To make matters even worse, veteran family members were also subjected to asbestos related diseases, via second hand exposure. Exposure to asbestos builds up in the body over time due to continuous exposure. Asbestos is responsible for workers developing, after a 10-40 year span of time, diseases such as: mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. The asbestos fibers hook into the lungs and develop some scar tissue. By the 1970’s, the first asbestos lawsuits were launched in an attempt to make asbestos manufacturers liable for the harm inflicted on workers who are subjected to exposure. There was an attempt to ban asbestos back in 1989. However, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit overturned the ban in 1991 under pressure from industry lobbyists. There are still some regulations on asbestos that were not overturned. Today, there are approximately 1.3 million construction workers who are at risk of exposure while on the jobsite. Why is this mineral worth the health risk anyways? Asbestos was used for it’s amazing ability to strengthen and fireproof materials as well as resisting corrosion. Asbestos is the main ingredient that is used in a variety of products that include the following:

  • concrete
  • bricks
  • fireplace cement
  • pipes
  • Adhesives
  • Automotive parts
  • Cement
  • Construction mastics
  • gunning mix
  • Diaphragms
  • Duct connectors
  • Electrical components
  • Felt
  • Fireproofing
  • Gaskets
  • Insulation
  • Laboratory equipment
  • Plastics
  • Cement sheets
  • Textiles
  • Tiles
  • Vinyl products

Asbestos is a valuable mineral that has been added to many products. The lobbyists are clearly strong and powerful within that industry. However, I believe that no one beats the pharmaceutical industry lobbyists. Awareness on the dangers of asbestos started happening between the 1950’s and 1970’s. Although the use of asbestos has been largely phased out since the 1980’s, it can still be found in products such as gaskets and brake pads. Workers knowingly exposed to asbestos are recommended to document their exposure as much as possible. Diseases from asbestos lie dormant in the body for a long period of time before resurrecting as a devastating disease. By this point, you may want to know exactly how does the asbestos fibers attack the body? The asbestos fibers attack the lungs. Some of the airborne fibers can become lodged within your alveoli. The alveoli are tiny sacs inside your lungs where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in your blood. The asbestos fibers irritate and scar lung tissue, causing the lungs to become stiff. This makes breathing rather difficult. As asbestosis progresses, more and more lung tissue becomes scarred. Eventually, your lung tissue becomes so stiff to where the lungs can’t contract and expand normally. You might also ask what are the symptoms of asbestos related diseases? Here are the symptoms of various diseases that come after asbestos exposure:

  • Shortness of breath
  • A persistent, dry cough
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Dry and crackling sounds in your lungs when you inhale
  • Fingertips and toes that appear wider and rounder than usual (clubbing)

On my jobsite, we have asbestos handlers and monitors working. They are required to post warning signs The asbestos handlers have created their decontamination shed and prepped some areas for future asbestos removal. My main job is to keep the tenants safe and make sure the contaminated material gets removed from the jobsite. When that crew gets really rockin’ and rollin’ onsite, I’m sure I shall discuss those adventures for your reading pleasure. In the meantime, I certainly hope you learned something from this blog post topic. If you have any questions on this topic, drop the comment down in the bottom of this blog post. I will answer your question when I get a chance to do so. I’m also open to other safety topic suggestions as well. I thank you for stopping by this safety themed blog post today. Safety Topic Of The Day: Some Of The Dangers Of Electricity

Video Credit: ARC Flash Consultants On YouTube

TODAY’S SAFETY FACT: It takes as little as 50 milliamps to stop the heart. You must always be alert as to where your hands are when working on electricity. If the hand placement allows the path of electricity to cross your heart with one hand on live electricity and one hand that taps into ground, then you become the path to ground. This is why I place my left hand in my pocket when I’m tying in a circuit onto a circuit breaker. It’s also wise to look away prior to energizing the circuit breaker for the first time. There is a danger of an arc flash (another future topic) that could spew molten copper in the event that the breaker is faulty.

Hello Everyone!

I wish for you a stress-free, smooth work week so far. Are you planning for the weekend already? I’m just thinking about the opportunity to sleep in on the weekends. Anything else is just the cherry on top. 🙂 For today’s blog post, I intend to discuss another safety topic on some of the dangers of electricity. Before I proceed even further with the topic on electrical hazards, I might as well share with you my latest Amazon promotions for my e-books. My first children’s e-book entitled, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” will be available from August 31st to September 7th on Amazon within the United Kingdom market. I was able to add my edited teen version entitled, “Construction Tales: A Young Person’s Guide To Accomplish Anything In Life” to the Kindle Countdown Deal from August 31st to September 7th is also in the United Kingdom market. My first adult e-book entitled, “Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey To Become An Electrician” is now also scheduled to be in the Kindle Countdown Deal, within the United States market, from September 8th-15th. As a reminder, the promotions only applies to the e-book versions. I’m also truly thrilled to be sharing my new release of the “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” online e-store through Spring. I’m working on making it also available on Shopify, Printful, and other e-commerce platforms. I have two designs to choose from: 1) Feisty Lady Trio 2) Sugar Momma Bed. Check out my two design concepts for the product line along with the Spring store links down below this safety blog post. As I have shared before, my business partner and I are in the process of launching my new website, “Safety First Training Academy” that can be found at http://www.safetyfirstllc.net/. As of now, the website is still under construction and we are in the preparation process. I’m going to add some construction safety related topics to this blog as well. The purpose of adding them here is that they will also be available on the Safety First Training Academy website. I’m looking forward to the future success with our various business ventures!!

For this blog post, I’m going to discuss the some of the dangers of electricity. For today, I opted to discuss the importance of using a GFCI strip while using power tools when at work or home. However, I’m aware that, since this subject is in my wheelhouse, I can use my home run topic and branch circuit out to a variety of different topics (see what I did there?) while losing track of time. I know that I also want to touch briefly on arc blasts since that is an interesting topic. I will share an arc blast video in this post. In a subsequent post, I shall go more into depth as to how they happen. For now, we shall cover the importance of a GFCI strip. The modern power tool protects you since they are double insulated. Additionally, they also have a clutch these days to keep you from getting hung up while drilling surfaces such as concrete. Ask any old timer who has been in the business for at least 25-years about the old, heavy duty masonry drills with no clutch!! As a first year apprentice, I remember having the job of holding the ends of the extension cord at eye level. My journeyman had the masonry drill wedged between the wall, himself, and a ladder. The importance of this drill positioning strategy would be soon discovered not long after he started. When the masonry bit got bound up in the deck, the power tool would wildly continue until the power source was removed. Boy, I realized the importance of my role the first time the drill bit got bound up!! The poor guy went for a ride for a few seconds until I killed it!! That experience initially put fear in my heart!! I had to push down those fears since learning the business meant more to me than the fear. I was up on an 8ft ladder drilling through a wall with a 3/4″ x 12″ drill bit. I almost broke my wrist when the bit bound up while in the hole. I think my screams of agony were heard in the next town over! I learned real quick to put pressure on but not too much and hold tight!! Nowadays, you can penetrate a concrete wall with a battery powered masonry power tool. Let’s move on and discuss the importance of using GFCI strips on the job. Prior to each use of your power tool, visually inspect the tool for any form of damage or leaking grease. Additionally, it is very important to make sure that the power tool cord is not worn, torn, ripped, or frayed. This also applies to the extension cord being used. If you see any of these poor conditions while using the power tool, remove them from service immediately. You may want to know what is a GFCI? GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. It’s designed to essentially monitor the flow of electricity, open up the circuit if it detects any unusual paths to ground, and de-energize the GFCI strip instantaneously.

Envision in your mind that an electrical circuit flows is a loop- so to speak. If there is a difference in potential, the GFCI is designed to pick up the problem within 1/40 of a second. Once detected, it opens up the circuit and stops the flow of electricity for the entire GFCI strip. The difference in potential is basically a malfunction that causes electricity to leak to ground. This malfunction can be caused by a break in the wire’s insulation, a driven nail that shorts out the wires, rolling over the device with a vehicle, etc. Once the loop’s integrity is compromised, it is no longer contained strictly within the loop. If not quickly prevented, such as the tripping of the GFCI, this is exactly how people get electrocuted. After all, it only takes 50 milliamps to stop the heart if the electricity travels across the heart. The best way for electricity to flow in that direction is to have one left hand on the hot leg and the other right hand on a piece of metal that serves as a means to ground. The electricity always looks for the path to ground. Therefore, the electricity can travel from the left hand to the right hand and pass right over a person’s heart. This is exactly why I place my left hand behind by back in my pocket. I then use my right hand to turn the screwdriver to lock in the circuit breaker into the panel. I’m trying to avoid creating a path where one hand goes to power and the other goes to ground. Electricity, especially in higher voltages such as 277 volts, can cause your muscles to contract and freeze. This can make removing yourself from the path of electricity almost impossible. The best thing you can do, if witnessing your co-worker being hung up on an energized circuit, is to hit them with a piece of wood or something rubberized and knock them off the power source. Wood and rubber both serve as an insulator that protects you from making contact with the person who is energized. There is actually one person in this business with whom I held a stick of 2″ x 4″ just in case he got hung up on the panel that he was working in. I was fully prepared since I perceived him as rather reckless in nature when he was working. He was one guy that I genuinely thought would take me down with him with an arc blast! Of course, that is another story for a later date. Switching gears back to rubber and wood who both serve as insulators. Here is another interesting fact for your mental rolodex. You should stay in your car during a thunder and lightning storm since your rubber tires insulate you from potential electricity leaks to ground. The water on the ground pools into puddles and serves as a conductor. Therefore, you should stay in your car. Besides, walking around during a thunderstorm makes you a sitting duck for when lightning strikes. On the other hand, if you run around in the field with a long, metallic object, you run an even higher risk of getting electrocuted, via a lightning strike. Of course, this is because a metallic object is made out of material that actually conducts electricity- it allows it to freely flow to ground. You serve as the path between the metal and the ground. Just stay in the car! Just avoid those dances with electricity since they are not any fun. Just know that the longer you dance with an energized circuit, the more likely you are to suffer a heart attack and die. Electricity will also cook a person from the inside-out and dehydrate them. Make sure to call an ambulance immediately if you see a person under these circumstances.

By now, you should understand the importance of using a GFCI strip either while completing tasks at work or plugging along on hobbies while at home. After reading this, you may want to use one at all times. They are very important to use while working in construction. When you are on a jobsite, such as a brand-new deck job, you are susceptible to different weather conditions. Weather conditions, such as a rain or snowstorm, can make you even more subjected to being a part of the impromptu path to ground for an electrical supply. If you see a GFCI strip submerged in water, do not assume that the circuit has been de-energized while underwater for the GFCI strip. Visually trace the cord back to the source of power, use gloves, and disconnect the power. Another good thing to do is to periodically test your GFCI strip. In the center of the strip, there is a test and reset button. If it doesn’t immediately trip and reset as designed, then proceed to remove it from service and replace it with another GFCI strip. Be mindful that water also serves as a conductor of electricity. It’s a bad combination if you choose to wade in a body of water that contains stray electricity. There is a high probability of getting electrocuted by wading in the water. Also beware that you cannot have multiple GFCI strips on the same circuit. Adding multiple GFCI’s to a circuit will just cause problems such as constantly shutting down, via opening the circuit. Another key thing to remember when you are installing a home GFCI receptacle is to make sure that you don’t cross the wires of the line side hot leg (black/red/blue) and neutral (white) with the load side of the hot leg and neutral. As per the National Electrical Code (NEC), GFCI receptacles are required in wet locations such as the bathroom and kitchen. All electricians must be able to quickly reference and follow the National Electrical Code. This electrical code is considered the “worst job” that you are allowed to do. In large cities, such as New York City, the NEC has an amended section in the code book that gives out even more rules than the National Electrical Code. This is because local jurisdiction applies that supersedes the national standard of business practices. Crossing the line and load wires will cause the GFCI receptacle to not work properly. The best way to avoid confusion is to test and identify your line side duo and mark them with white tape. You can either write “hot” or “line” for the “home run” group that comes from your main electric service panel. The wires that continue to another location are called the “load” side. If you are using a GFCI circuit breaker in your electrical panel, then you identify the outlet(s) being energized in the kitchen or bathroom as “GFCI protected”. Always put in the effort to lock out/tag out the circuit to ensure that it is de-energized while you are actively changing out the GFCI receptacle. Yes, that is another safety topic to discuss in the near future.

Please take your time and work as safely as possible. Do not allow anyone to force you to do something that you are not comfortable doing. This is especially true if you are an amateur working on electrical components. After all, it is your life that is on the line and not anyone else. I hope you learned something from this blog post topic? If you have any questions on this topic, drop the comment down in the bottom of this blog post.

Safety Topic Of Today: Fall Protection

TODAY’S SAFETY FACT: Falls are the leading cause of death in construction here in the United States. In 2020, there were 351 deaths, out of 1,008 fatalities, that came as a result of falling while at work. {Source: OSHA.gov} It takes 1/3 of a second to recognize that you are falling. You could have fallen as far 30 feet by the time you finished the remaining fractions of a second. By the time your brain has registered what is happening, your death could have occurred immediately!

Hello Everyone!

How was this past Labor Day Weekend for you? Compared to the previous two weekends, this one was more low key for me. It is a very rainy day here in New York City. This weather sure makes my joints hurt. I sure can forecast the weather according to my aches and pains. For today’s blog post, I intend to discuss the safety topic on fall protection. Before I proceed even further with the fall protection topic, I might as well share with you my latest Amazon promotions for my e-books. I’m not trying to travel on a negative road with this product line. It’s intended to empower the person wearing the shirt and not tear anyone else down. I’m not attacking a gender with this product line either. Some people will feel empowered while others laugh. I totally expect a mix of both! As always, I’m open to hearing other design concepts. Drop them down in the comment section below if you wish to offer a design suggestion. Here are my two design concepts for the product line and the Spring store links for each design:

As I have stated in my previous blog posts, my business partner and I are in the process of launching my new website Safety First Training Academy that can be found at http://www.safetyfirstllc.net/. As of now, the website is still under construction. I’m going to add some construction safety related topics to this blog as well for the purpose of adding them to Safety First Training Academy. I’m looking forward to the future success with my various business ventures!! As a construction worker, have you ever asked the question, “why do we have to keep discussing these toolbox talk topics”? Regardless of how many years you have in the business, refreshing the mind on these safety topics can work to help mitigate a jobsite accident. When you always have a variety of safety topics on your mind, you will react better when dealing with an emergency on the jobsite. This is exactly why toolbox talks are mandated for crews each week. If you have ever wondered why you are forced to discuss different safety topics, you now have a better understanding as to why this is a required weekly task. Here in New York City, crews are required to discuss what tasks need to be accomplished each day before work even starts. This is known as a “pre-task” meeting and/or a “job hazard analysis” (known in the field as a JHA). Workers need to know what tools they will be using and the hazards associated with each task. After discussing the hazards and matching remedies, the worker then signs the pre-task sheet and then goes to work. Each worker is acknowledging that they are properly prepared for work for the day. The objective with this pre-task exercise is to help the worker identify the potential hazards and share the ways to avoid an accident. When it’s time to go to work, the crew member has this discussion on the front of the brain.

One of the biggest issues that I’m dealing with on my project is workers not being consistent with using a proper anchorage point for a worker’s fall protection system. I’m working in conjunction with two other site safety managers on this project. We are working together on a large 20-story residential high-rise complex here in Queens in New York City. We all witness the same issues in regards to fall protection. You may ask what is fall protection? Generally, fall protection can be provided through the use of guardrail systems, safety net systems, or personal fall arrest systems. For the purpose of this particular blog post, I’m going to speak on the personal fall arrest system. A personal fall arrest system means a system that’s used to arrest an employee in a fall from a working level. It consists of an anchorage, connectors, a body belt or body harness and may include a lanyard, deceleration device, lifeline, or suitable combinations of these. In my region, body belts are not allowed. Some of our workers wrap their lanyard, also known in the field as a “yo-yo”, around the aluminum railing that serves as a fall protection for the concrete breezeway. There are two different types of lanyards. The first lanyard is called a positioning lanyard. A positioning lanyard controls where you’re physically able to move to in order to keep you from entering a fall hazard zone. The second one is called a shock absorbing lanyard. A shock absorbing lanyard contains an energy-absorbing unit to limit fall arrest forces in the case of a fall. The anchorage needs to be pull tested and capable of holding at least 5,000 pounds. Relying on an aluminum railing, that was installed back in the 1950’s, is not a good idea to rely on in order to avoid a falling death.

Another issue, in relation to fall protection, we see is the lack of consistency with connecting the lanyard to the anchor. In an effort to minimize the gap with being continuously connected, three vertical lifelines have been dropped from the top floor. The lifelines are connected to the building concrete support intended for the scaffold support on the top floor. Of course, the anchors were pull tested and recorded for our records onsite. Despite having the lifelines, I have caught workers not continuously connected from the yo-yo to the lifeline. In the event of working at a spot where the lifeline doesn’t reach, it’s wise to engineer a horizontal lifeline. The average worker onsite is between the age range of 20’s to 30’s. Sadly, the younger workers take more risk as opposed the older workers. This makes them wide open to accidents. I’m even guilty of taking risks when I was younger. I thank God that I didn’t have to pay the price for my cowboy moves from the past when I was much younger and less experienced. The cold, hard reality is that it takes only a fraction of a second to fall. By the time you even realize that you are falling, you will be already on the ground. Deaths by falling off a ladder could happen even while only being on the first step of the ladder. All a person has to do is hit their head in a particular spot and life is over for the victim. The odds of surviving a fall of several floors is rather slim. In order to avoid falling to your death, just work to make sure that your lanyard is always connected to the anchorage point. If you fail to be consistent with being connected to the anchorage point, you are just playing Russian roulette with your life! Please be safe my friend!

Newly Released!! “I’m My Own $ugar Daddy” On Spring!!!

Hello Everyone!

We’ve made it to the last work day before we enjoy Labor Day Weekend, my friend! Are you are celebrating the 3-day weekend? If so, what are your weekend plans? As of now, my plans are totally open at the moment. I will more than likely spend part of the weekend with my boyfriend and work on my creative projects for the rest of the weekend. Before I proceed with the purpose of this blog post, I might as well share with you my latest Amazon promotions for some of my books. My first children’s e-book entitled, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls” will be available again from August 31st to September 7th for $.99 cents on the Amazon United Kingdom market. I was able to add my edited teen version entitled, “Construction Tales: A Young Person’s Guide To Accomplish Anything In Life” to the Kindle Countdown Deal from August 31st to September 7th is also in the United Kingdom market. My first adult e-book entitled, “Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey To Become An Electrician” is not currently scheduled to be in the Kindle Countdown Deal for now. Let me know what Amazon market that you are in and I will work on a promotion in your region? Don’t forget to check out my latest Tik Tok videos that are now published and available on YouTube. For this blog post, I’m truly excited to be sharing the new release of my “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” online e-store through Spring, Shopify, and Printful. As I shared in the previous blog post, I was having a conversation with my best friend Melissa about the concept. We said it would be funny to have t-shirts printed with the “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” logo. I told her that I was going to carry the torch and actually create the product line. She is proud of me for actually following through with our conversation and making it come to life!! I did some research on the internet. To my surprise, I saw that the concept has never been done until now. Therefore, my design concept has been born out of a necessity since it doesn’t currently exist. 😛 I find the concept to be super humorous in nature!! I would find it even more funny when I find out men are wearing the t-shirts!! Honestly, it is intended to make some people laugh as a source of humor. I’m not trying to go down a negative road with this product line either. Some people will feel empowered while others laugh. I totally expect a mix of both! I totally plan on crafting new designs in the future. As always, I’m open to hearing other design concepts. Drop them down in the comment section below if you wish to offer a design suggestion. Here are my first two design concepts for the product line and the Spring store links for each design:

As stated before, I’ve taken the steps to trademark my “I’m My Own $ugar Daddy” design logos. I have taken those steps to protect my work through Legal Zoom. There was no way that someone was going to come behind me and try to claim my creative work. This goes the same for my books and podcast content. I am still in the process of establishing my “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” e-store on Printful. Eventually, the product line will become available through major distribution chains for purchase. I’m totally excited about this new adventure. I totally believe in it’s success too!! I plan to promote it on all of my social media platforms so beware. I would be totally honored if you like the concept and share on your platform of choice as well. In return, I can share your content as well. When I find out that my Shopify e-store and other electronic e-stores go live, I will post another blog update. I totally thank you for reading about my new Spring e-store here in my blog post today. Don’t forget to follow me at leslie_m_jasper on Tik Tok or Verbally Disastrous on YouTube. Share your feedback on my content down in the comment section at the bottom of the blog post. Launching My “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” Product Line!!

Hello Everyone!

How are you are doing with your Wednesday mid-week work flow? Here in the United States, we are approaching the upcoming Labor Day weekend. If you are celebrating, what are your weekend plans? As of now, my plans are totally open at the moment. For this blog post, I’m truly excited to be sharing the establishment of my “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” online e-store through Printful. I was having a conversation with my best friend Melissa about the concept. We said it would be funny to have t-shirts printed with the “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” logo. I told her that I was going to carry the torch and actually create the product line. She is proud of me for actually following through with our conversation and making it come to life!! Of course, I vowed to give her some retirement money when the store is successful for the design ideas! To my surprise, I saw that the concept has never been done until now. Therefore, my design concept has been born out of a necessity since it doesn’t currently exist. 😛 The funny thing is that, when my father was alive, he used to joke and call me his sugar momma. On his headstone, I inscribed as a joke, “I’m going to miss my sugar daddy”. It was his way of using humor and telling me that he was proud of my successful career path as a journeywoman electrician. I would find it even more funny when I find out men are wearing the t-shirts. Honestly, it is intended to make people laugh as a source of humor. I’m not trying to go down a negative road with this product line. In order to create the concept, I went on Fiverr and worked with a graphic artist to create my first two t-shirt logos. As always, I’m open to hearing other design concepts. Drop them down in the comment section below if you wish to offer a design suggestion. Here are my first two design concepts for the product line:

“I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” Fiesty Lady Trio Design on Printful:

Of course, I’ve taken the steps to trademark the design logos. I have taken steps to protect my work through Legal Zoom. There was no way that someone was going to come behind me and try to claim my creative work. This goes the same for my books and podcast content. I am in the process of establishing my “I’m My Own Sugar Daddy” e-store on Printful. It will then become available through major distribution chains for purchase. I’m totally excited about this new adventure. I totally believe in it’s success too!! I plan to promote it on all of my social media platforms. I would be totally honored if you like the concept and share on your platform of choice as well. In return, I can share your content as well. When I find out my e-store is live and available for review, I plan to post another blog update very shortly. I totally thank you for reading about my new online store here in my blog post today. Hurry up and wrap up your Wednesday work/school/home tour and think about what’s for dinner tonight. I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon.
