A Pep Talk Given to A Fellow Tradeswoman Receiving Jobsite Harassment

Hello everyone!

I am sharing a pep talk given to a fellow tradeswoman who was experiencing a difficult time with coworkers on the construction site. I was moved by what she wrote and wanted to share.
I wish I had someone to convey these thoughts when I was dealing with the worst parts of my career working in the field. As one guy used to say to me, “Sexual harassment starts for Leslie at 7:01am”. I endured plenty in my 21 year career as a journeywoman electrician. I combatted alot of the nonsense with tons of humor.

You must learn how to manage plenty of poor behavior working as a woman in construction. Enjoy this pep talk I am sharing: Sometimes when you are harassed at work, you text your girl on break, and she gives you a pep talk. This was a particularly good one, so I’ll leave it here, and anyone who needs a pep talk can refer to it:

“You make some of the men you work with angry. They don’t like you because you’re capable. They don’t like you because you’re smart. They don’t like you because knowing that you can do their job makes them feel worthless. They don’t like you because they know you go home every night to a wife who loves you — they don’t like you because you have everything they thought only men should have.

That’s just true. But that makes you STRONGER than they are, not weaker.

They are hobbled by their short-sightedness and their entitlement. You are free. He wanted to see you uncomfortable. And that’s ALL HE GETS. Because otherwise, he’s fucking pathetic. He needs you to feel okay about himself. You don’t need SHIT from him. So you are going to look him in the eye and you are going to remember that, every single time he lashes out: He needs you to feel bad so that he can feel okay. But if he was blown into outer space tomorrow, you wouldn’t know the goddamn difference. YOU are the one with the power. Because he has been taught to compare himself to other people as a man. Being a man is all about comparing yourself to others and trying to be on top or as close to the top as you can be, and sometimes, if you have bad self esteem, you have to really kick the people you think are at the bottom of the ladder, just so you make sure you’re not coming in last.
However, you don’t give a shit about him or his feelings. None of that matters. That’s what makes you MORE powerful.

So you gotta clean yourself up, take some deep breaths, and remember to let him wash right over you.

His bullshit means nothing because YOU DON’T NEED HIM TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF. You already ARE good.

Just remember how much messing with you matters to him. You don’t want him to get what he wants, right? Keep your cool and carry on. I love you and you’re doing a good job.”

She smiled and felt much better & empowered! 👊👊

Cheers!

hello everyone!
Here is an article on celebrating the history of women in the trades.
I never think about it in this manner. However, women in construction are a part of history.
Not alot of women dive into this line of work. I see ALOT of women do it nowadays.
However, it still is not enough!
Enjoy the article and feel free to share:

My First Book Interview- Let’s Talk Writing Episode 69

hello everyone!

Here is my very 1st first book interview with Vinny Daquino for Let’s Talk Writing Episode 69:

 https://youtu.be/gNiI08b0evs

I was nervous but I believe I did okay despite feeling that way. I try to keep my composure and not let fear take over me. I am focused today on my job re-training process and doing alot of studying. Once the dust settles, I will share and praise the person who has given me this amazing opportunity. I walked away from a situation that wasn’t working for me. This has required some seclusion and healing for me in order to move forward.

I thank you for stopping by and reading my blogs. I surpassed 10,000 visits to my former blog at http://www.lesliemjasper.blogspot.com. I used an email that became inactive and lost access to my 1st blog. This is my 2nd attempt at a blog that I am active on. I am frustrated but understand and must deal with life’s issues and navigate accordingly.  I am starting over and learning how to explore the blogs of others and interact.

I am thankful for people from all over the world stopping by!! Have a great day and speak with you soon!

Cheers!

Word Press With Lawrence Wray Interview Questions- My Answers For The Interview Coming In The Future!

You can now click on the above “LISTEN ON SPOTIFY” (WHEN AVAILABLE) to hear this in audio!

Hello everyone!

Here are some of the questions I have filled out for an interview with author, Lawrence Wray.

Here is the format

I am keeping it that way so fellow authors can copy and paste it for their use. It may not stay that way as I see it when posted. You can cut and paste and work on your own interview. There are a lot of questions to fill out so pace yourself and take your time! I hope to help some fellow authors out getting the exposure they need for their book.

Good luck to all!

I’ve decided to throw my hat in the ring and do some author interviews on my blog. I’m aiming at one per week, so first come first served.

Email the finished interview to lawrencewray@hotmail.com

If there are any questions that you would like to have included, just put them in. I don’t expect to have to edit anything, so if I do find something that needs looking at, I’ll let you know before I post and we’ll talk it through. Please provide up to 5 photographs. (Author, books, etc) Book blurb, etc., get it out of your system. Everything welcome.

Lets get that author/book out there folks. . . . . . * All sections marked with an asterisk will be deleted before uploading. . . . . .

Welcome all, Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Leslie M Jasper, author of Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey to Become an Electrician

Hi Leslie, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background? I started my electrical career, at 17 years old, in the U.S. Navy as a construction electrician in the Seabees. I have been a union electrician for the past 23+ years. For the past six+ years, I got the opportunity to transition into the office and train to become a CAD operator working on some electrical engineer. I started working closely with my project manager learning those tasks as well. I went in that direction to work on a few projects as a project manager. I am now going into safety arena. I work within the five bouroughs of New York City, Westchester County, and Fairfield County in Connecticut. In addition, I have worked for seven years as a writing coach and instructor for Empire College in New York City.

What were you like at school? I was the quiet and shy band nerd who enjoyed an educational challenge. It took me 20 years to go back and finally get my MBA. I also have an OSHA 502 certification- meaning I can teach and offer OSHA 10 and 30 cards.

Were you good at English? It is fair to say I was since I had a very good GPA in school.

What are your ambitions for your writing career? I would like to write at least four more books for the Construction Tales series and a fiction book about a little girl who struggled within an abusive home life to become a successful self-made millionaire. I would like to write a few memoirs for some of my interesting friends as well once retired.

Which writers inspire you? I enjoyed reading V.C. Andrews and Stephen King as a teen and young adult. I have not been able to find time to dig more deeper into writers since I am usually very busy. I do have a tendency to read and assortment of work that is thought provoking and maybe controversial.

So, what have you written? I have written the first volume of my Construction Tales series. My first book is entitled, Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey to Become an Electrician. Nine months later I edited my teen version of the book. It is entitled, Construction Tales: A Young Person’s Guide to Accomplish Anything in Life.
These books will cover my journey to becoming an electrician in New York.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
In this book, I am the main character. What makes my character so special is because I step foot into a male-dominated work environment and attempt to learn a trade. I worked hard and earned a great working reputation despite the lack of a warm embrace from some co-workers. I am attempting to do something few women are brave enough to do.

What are you working on at the minute? I have been very busy promoting my first (teen and adult version) book. I started writing Volume 2 that is entitled, Construction Tales: My Illuminated Path Continues… I need to carve out more time to write the book.

What’s it about? Volume 2 offers more construction stories in different environments as well as what it was like working outside on the railroad in the winter while pregnant.

What genre are your books? I would say inspirational and self-help books.

What draws you to this genre? The fact that I was working in a field that is very difficult and managing very challenging people. I offer guidance on how to naviagate this treacherous field of business.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book? I have thought about someone in between Jennifer Garner and Melissa McCarthy would be a fun and zestful choices for that role.

How much research do you do? Very little research was done- I just have to remember what happened 20 years ago.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers? No, not yet.

When did you decide to become a writer? My first stint of huge unemployment while working with the tools. I had plenty of time on my hands to try my hand at it.

Why do you write? I wanted to share my story in an effort to demonstrate it is difficult to get into this business but it can be done. I am a part of women’s history and it was important to preserve those periods of time.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something? The great recession of 2008 brought on my need to start writing. I was thinking that there are probably few books out there that showcase women in construction.

Do you write full-time or part-time? I write when I can find blocks of time to putting my story on paper.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured? I will think of a funny story and write a short story and post on my Facebook book page. I will then go back and expand on the moment in time with more details and feelings during that snapshot in time. I then carve out a small block of time and then go back to other tasks.

Do you write every day, 5 days a week or as and when?
No I do not write every day. I do write short stories on my lunch break or while walking on the treadmill during the first 15 minutes of my cardio routine. I must then find a nice quiet time to write more in-depth.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?
I think a great goal would be to get a 1,000 words in per day. In reality, I probably do 250 words a day. I am heavily involved in social media book promotions. I really need to work on beefing up my daily word content. For now, my writing is on the back burner.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?
On my computer. I try on my iPad or G9 but it is not very efficient.

Where do the your ideas come from?
The jobsites from the past and my crazy work coworkers!

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?
I think of a funny story then write it out. I go back and expand on it big time.

How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?
I have evolved creatively through my journey of obtaining a college education. This process opens your mind and allows new ideas to come in fluidly.

What is the hardest thing about writing?
Finding time to do it! I have a few things on my plate that take up blocks of time.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?
Remembering funny old stories from jobs in the past.

What is the easiest thing about writing?
Coming up with a story and running with it. I naturally like to offer “too many details” in the real world.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
If that was my only task, maybe a month. Juggling it in between jobs, it could take a couple of years. It depends on how bad I want it finished.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?
Sometimes, hard to remember some great and crazy events on jobs in the past.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?
I would say walk away from it. When an idea pops up, it will be in the shower or driving. Just find the next free moment and jot it down.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?
This book is the first part of my Construction Tales series. I have written about what it was like to become a female electrician in New York. I have 23+ years and counting of stories to tell. I have co-workers who have offered to share some of their stories as well. I share my personal journey and challenges I endured and overcame during that time period.

What are your thoughts on writing a book series.
In my situation, it is great! I cannot fit and remember all the stories to put them into just one book. I don’t pressure myself too much. I write the stories and come back to them to expand when I am ready.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
I have little time to do personal reading. I was once commuting hours to New York City so I was reading current events and a few books during the long ride in. I was reading some success stories from Jack Welch as well as some self-help inspirational books. I have also read some books about fellow women in the trades.

For your own reading, do you prefer e-books or traditional paper/hard back books?
I definitely prefer to have the book in my hand while reading. I am not a fan of the e-book just yet.

What book/s are you reading at present?
I have dived into yet didn’t fully finish the book entitled, The Joy of Plumbing by Hattie Hasan. It is about a group of women plumbers in business together in England. Lately, I have been studying safety related material for some upcoming exams.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?
Oh no! That process is painful! I would much rather have someone else edit it for me. I had to help editing with this book and I will make sure I have help on the next book!

Do you let the book stew – leave it for a month and then come back to it to edit?
When I helped edit the last time, I spent almost the entire summer of 2013 going over it multiple times. I will not do it alone with my editor again! I will let and editor handle the entire process!

Who edited your book and how did you select him/her?
My book was edited by a family member, Jeanine Larkin. I chose her since she is family and offered to help me on the process.

Tell us about the cover/s and how it/they came about.
The book cover has a pink hard had with a pair of pliers and screwdriver shaped together in a phallic symbol. I wanted someone to immediately recognize that the book is about a woman electrician. My “mom figure” told me to put the phallic symbol on the hard hat so in case someone doesn’t get the symbolism.

Who designed your book cover/s?
My brother-in-law Nick Jasper. I told him what I wanted and he made it happen for me.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?
I definitely think it does. I know I would pass by an unknown author if the book cover was not alluring to me.

How are you publishing this book and why?
I published through Createspace since my book falls into a category that publishers do not normally know how to market to audience. Instead of waiting for a publishing house to find it interesting, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing against being published or the other way around?
One main advantage to self-publishing is that you can make it happen where it was not a possibility before.
The main disadvantage is that you must work super hard to make it known to audiences.

How do you market your books?
I make it happen through TONS of social media exposure. I abuse hashtags for many big book fair events. I reach out to as many libraries, book clubs, and people accepting interviews as I can.

Why did you choose this route?
I chose this route since it is the cheapest way to promote my book. I must keep my costs down.

Would you or do you use a PR agency?
I don’t currently have one at the moment. I would like to have one if one becomes available.

Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books?
Use every tool out there available. If you want to use more, ask many people. Join forces with other authors and join marketing forces with them.

What part of your writing time do you devote to marketing your book?
At the moment, all my writing time is devoted to marketing.

What do you do to get book reviews?
At the moment, I have offered my book to a few friends in exchange for a review. Some people have failed to complete their end of the bargain. My book ends up as a dusty old book sitting somewhere solo.

How successful has your quest for reviews been so far?
I would say it is decent for the adult version. I have one for the teen version so that needs help tremendously!

Do you have a strategy for finding reviewers?
I thought about a free book in exchange for a review. That has not been as fruitful as I had hoped. I will have to come up with something else.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?
Both are good to serve as guides for writing the next book! I had one somewhat bad mention so I fixed it in the teen book.

Any amusing story about marketing books that happened to you?
One of my buddies private messaged me after seeing the book, buying it, and reading it. He said I made him look like a real asshole in the book. I said the good thing is that no one knows who it is but you. I told him to wear it if the shoe fits. It was a very funny conversation.

What’s your views on social media for marketing?
I think it is a fabulous and cheap way to market and promote the book!

Which social network worked best for you?
My Facebook book page is definitely my best vehicle for posting book material and reaching people who would be interested in my book. Twitter feels good too.

Any tips on what to do and what not to do?
I would say don’t pay to get published when you have the marketing world of Amazon already at your fingertips. It gets printed, shipped, and funds are collected while you carry on with your life. A royalty check just pops up in your bank account.

Did you do a press release, Goodreads book launch or anything else to promote your work and did it work?
I have not explored those venues yet. I have worked with The Combined Book Exhibit to create a book trailer and the promotion that comes with that exposure. I did promote through the Virtual Book Café and did go on internet radio along with other book interviews that were loaded to YouTube. I would not say I received tremendous book sales and cannot retire or quit my job from it- maybe just known amongst people who read various avenues on the internet.

Did you get interviewed by local press/radio for your book launch?
No, I did not do that. I will be sure to do those marketing steps for when I launch Volume 2. I am a rookie to marketing. However, I am learning fast on how to proceed. I do seize opportunities when they present themselves.  I did get an opportunity, Summer of 2019, to go on #SecondShiftRadio on #TuneIn internet radio and do an interview.  I am returning to chat with House & Kyle this upcoming Sunday (Oct 2019).

Is there any marketing technique you used that had an immediate impact on your sales?
Abusing the designated hashtag, for a book fair event, on Twitter for an event did have a huge impact. I kind of felt bad when I received complaints from a few librarians attending an event that I was clogging up their feeds with my book trailer.

Did you make any marketing mistakes or is there anything you would avoid in future?
I probably have that are yet to be discovered. I didn’t market before the book launched is one mistake. I don’t think I need to sign up and pay for every book fair out there. I did that with little results. I will try to market as cheap as possible from now on!

Why do you think that other well written books just don’t sell?
Perhaps the right readers do not know the books exist. Not everyone has access to major tv network channels.

What do you think of “trailers” for books?
I think they are a fabulous marketing tool. Once you have one, you can keep using it at different venues for a long time.

Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one for your own book/s?
Yes, I do have one. It was created by The Combined Book Exhibit and ran in both NYC’s Book Expo America and the San Francisco book fair. I will probably do it for future book fairs in the future.

Do you think that giving books away free works and why?
I hear that it is a good marketing tool. I donate copies every so often to different events. I have donated free copies for a few Independent Author Book Expos I had previously attended and other promo events.

Here is the book trailer for Construction Tales:
https://youtu.be/RChC9wp97kk

Did you format your own book?
I used the Createspace template to format my book. That way it can be uploaded for Amazon for sale.

In what formats is your book available?
Available in paperback, Kindle, Nook, Audible, and iTunes worldwide

If formatted by someone else, how did you select them and what was your experience?
I used the formats offered through Createspace, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble and I have no complaints at the moment.

How do you relax?
I have a difficult time relaxing. I would say my best methods are to meditate nightly, go to the beach, go away somewhere peaceful, or on a cruise ship.

What is your favorite motivational phrase?
Go Hard or Go Home!

What is your favorite positive saying?
You are the captain of your own ship.

What is your favorite book and why?
I would have to say it is Flowers in the Attic. I read it as a teenager and for some reason it was my favorite for many years later.

What is your favorite quote?
“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”- Nelson Mandela

What is your favorite film and why?
I would say The Bone Collector is my all time favorite since I have a huge interest in forensice science.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?
I see myself older, wiser, with a man who has a good & loving soul, a couple of years more experience within the business side of the electrical industry, more accomplished in my goals, and closer to retirement!

What advice would you give to your younger self?
I would tell myself to not get so worried about stuff. God has a plan so when things happen it is for the best.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
I would like to meet Sheryl Sandberg who is the author of “Lean In”. I would like to meet her since she is strong, energetic, and a smart leader in business. I share being a widow with her so I can relate to that issue in her life.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
I would like to be the author of “Lean In” since I would like to write a book about being a successful executive who inspires other people to figure out how to find balance and live your best life that works for you.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
I would say pick up some mentors in the business and ask alot of questions. If you don’t know about something, find out by asking around until you find someone who knows. Then make yourself available to help others.

Where do you see publishing going in the future?
I see more works of literature from different sources becoming available. Perhaps the normally closed publishing world will dedicate a part of themselves to searching and reaching out to writers who pick up major steam in the social media world.

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?
I did sign up on an international platform, IPR License out of England, for an gaining international interest in my book.

How can readers discover more about you and you work?

hello everyone,

I figured I would share my first week journey with you. As with everywhere, there is the saturation overload of information. I have to figure out established procedures and then establish some new ones as well. This past week was loaded with getting acclimated to my contractors and the work load that is needed to submit. I’m used to having AutoCAD so having to give it to another person is frustrating. I am sure I will have it before I know it.

I am going to jobsites and figuring out what safety issues are of concern and what needs to be addressed. I am fortunate to have the safety rep from the union to serve as guidance to me. I have been taking a series of safety exams in an effort to become the safety manager for the company. It is a responsibility that I take seriously and plan to serve the team to the best of my ability.

Overall, it is an exciting journey and an amazing opportunity to build with my team so we can grow. We are determined to continue to grow and build to become next level with our work on the books. It is an honor to be one of the team to contribute to the growth that is here now and what is to come. My dream has always been to be a part of an amazing hard working team. We have a wonderful woman as our fearless leader. I took great pride this week in seeing her master electrical license. Her photo absolutely radiated with amazing positive energy and pride!👊 👊

It is an honor to become a part of the next generation of women owned businesses. We have quite a few kick ass women working on the team in a variety of capacities. We have some amazing men on the team as well. The landscape is changing in a big way. I never thought I would see it in my lifetime. I envision big things for our future! The goal is to see our shop bring in a billion dollars worth of work on our books. Loads of hard work and dedication while working as efficiently as possible. It is a powerful possibility that would be fabulous to achieve. We shall see where we go.

I want to see us grow in such a capacity that both my sons come join the team in the future. One son as a general foreman (he is a 3rd year apprentice) and the other working as a future electrical engineer. I have always pushed them to work hard and have the eye on the prize. One must work hard for what they want. We shall see what the future holds. As always, thanks for stopping by and reading my blog. Have an amazing week everyone!

Cheers!

HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone!

I hope and wish that everyone had a SAFE NYE???!! Drunk or sober, it was definitely not the night to be out on the roads last night for any reason. When I worked with the tools, we often referred to NYE as “amateur night”.  The rest of the year is reserved for professional drinkers (joke). I kept to myself and watched the festivities on tv last night.  Being a hermit has been my theme for 2019.  I need to force myself to venture out and stop staying in the house.

#2020 NEEDS to be better than the last!!👌👌 Upon reflection, I describe the year #2019 as, “going in like a lion and going out like a lamb“.🤔 This has indeed been the monumental year where I no longer accept, “half ass“, “minimal effort“, and “useless lip service” 🤷‍♀️🙏. I had finally put myself to a place where it is “okay” to walk from things that only serve as pain while managing to make one feel less than deserving. Solitude is a fine tool to reset your mind and body (almost too used to it) that leads to internal growth.  It took almost a year of being in solitude to reverse the damage done by a person who essentially did a quick build up and a gradual tear down over the past five years. Simultaneously, I have been taking major steps to end some physical pain.  After some physical healing, it has brought me some relief.  That helps me to continue functioning in life so I am grateful for that.

I call my two sons my “dudes”.  The shining part for 2019 is that the “dudes” have grown bigger and wiser.  My youngest son, we call him Jho, now has a shoe size that is very hard to find. I learned this fact over the holiday season. I keep mentioning to Jho that he needs to study electrical engineering and get into my union with his brother as well.  As of late, Jho speaks about going into the military.  He has some time to figure it out and I have some time to convince him. Meanwhile, my eldest son is still on his career path to become an electrician like his mom. He is becoming more and more adult like in nature so that is a wonderful thing.

Overall, the year 2019 has brought on more changes in many avenues than it has been in a long time in my circle. The best part of this year has been the flood of gifts of good people entering in my life when I needed it the most. I am learning that actually terrible stuff happens and makes other foreseen stressful events better.😳 That must have been the oddest lesson learned over the past two years.  I have also learned that continuing on a path that one is not supposed to be on any longer can bring on tremendous bad luck! Once I found the strength to pull myself away from a growing and evolving bad situation, the air felt lighter and my luck got better.  I am in a place in life currently where I am very cautious about putting myself in a new situation in the event that it brings on more pain or bad luck.  One tends to lose themselves in many aspects during the motion of service in a relationship. The ability to laugh again is a blessing along with coming and going as one pleases.  Despite it all, I wish those I have parted with peace, love, and light.  Life is too short to hang onto anything that can be too heavy to carry.  The focus for 2020 is my creative and 9-to-5 work, more solitude, hanging with the dudes, and digging out of the pile from the recession.

May the year 2020 give you the inspiration to stay on the path that works and to change within the avenues you need changed with the pace of one step at a time….

hello everyone,

I am continuing my work, with my essential worker crews, during this ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in various locations throughout NYC.  We have gotten into a decent stride and have a work flow going.  This is despite the fact that there are further PPE requirements on top of the regular PPE needs.  This is also despite the fact that it is much harder to work with a mask on vs nothing.  I am proud to be at the helm, although exhausting, of making sure our crews are feeling safe.  These are those monumental moments where your leadership skills are either considered stellar or not even close- it is one or the other.

It is certain that, during these times, you find out who people truly are during this moment in time. We find out who is strong vs weak, who is a leader vs a follower, who is selfless vs selfish, honest vs a scam artist, etc.  You truly get to see who is who during these moments in time.  I oftentimes feel like a lot of people choose to depend on me.  It is good since I have shown strong leadership skills.  It is not so good when I feel like my work load has been increased exponentially.  I want to see our team grow exponentially so I try my best.  The problem is that people do not realize the amount of hours I put in.  It is a labor of love for the interim.  I just wish others felt the same way that I do.  The sad part is I don’t always feel that reciprocation.

The biggest reward is being able to stop the blood flow on the initial job foolishness that had went down on the jobsite in the beginning.  Then the job not only finishes on time but exceeds expectations.  We do have a hard working and talented crew working with us; with some exceptions, of course.  The goal is to keep the crew working and finish ahead of schedule.  We want to turn the ship around and come in ahead of schedule.  As a woman in this business, this is super meaningful to me.  The good thing is that this is also super important to my general foreman as well.  He is super hard working and very much a forward thinking.  It is a good match to get things accomplished.

I am working on trying to find work balance and figure out how to also study.  I need to ensure that I do not constantly focus on work seven days a week.  It is a challenge when you are trying to add a new coworker to come on board and not allow yourself to constantly work the entire weekend.  I need to continue my safety credential studies in an effort to complete and work within a different capacity.  The good thing about it all, I will be locked in with a safe and secure means to finish my working career.  The studying topics are everything from physics to algebra.  I need to get some audio books in order to study via listening.  The objective is to continue a positive path and smash my goal by December 2020 or sooner!

I wish you all to be safe and enjoy the rest of a fabulous weekend! 🙂

Cheers!

hello everyone!

I hope you all are enjoying your 3 day weekend!?!

It is a great moment to in time, as an essential worker, to get some rest and re-group to accomplish things that I could not get a chance to take care of during the week.

The stress of acquiring and maintaining PPE was a hardship in the beginning of the global pandemic.  However, my resourcefulness served me well in the initial acquisition process for the shop.

I have held the fort down managing multiple projects in many aspects for the past six months.  It felt like a start-up company in the making.  A lot of hard work was required to help grow to next level growth.

My goal has been to become a site safety manager since I was first approached about it in Aug 2019.  I have been helped by my current shop CEO to achieve that next level.  It helps me build my job security and adds more skills to my tool box.  It also helps the shop so it is mutually beneficial.  The goal is to serve as a sentinel and keep the shop safe.  This effort requires some down time and more extensive training.  Therefore, I am stepping back from being a project manager and heading towards my sabbatical to finish my safety training.

I am so thrilled with the opportunity to rest from the weight of the shop on my shoulders!!  I took the responsibility very seriously and certainly hope that the coverage will take care of my forepersons on various projects.  I am so looking forward to the rest for my mind.  I will be able to detach and focus on my studies.  That focus is very needed to re-emerge and start the next journey with the next level of success.

I have appreciated the opportunity for the past 6+ years as being a project manager.  There is a lot of details and elbow grease that is required to ensure the crew continues with the work flow.  When you are sitting in project meetings, I am the ONLY female unless there is an admin taking notes.  This is why now working for a woman is both unique and different on many levels.  In the beginning, I was so nervous and excited to learn back in 2014 after leaving the tools.  I didn’t immediately get the opportunity to try it out.  Once I got the opportunity, I was often thrown at already losing projects prior to even setting foot on the jobsite.  That has been the theme of almost every project I have worked upon.  It is no coincidence that these projects were thrown at me since they were a loser- I might as well give it a go, be the scapegoat, and try to stop the bleeding.  I have learned so much from each and every one of them.  I am grateful for the opportunity but it is time to step up to the next level.

As I have mentioned in the past, I started my safety journey back in 2013.  I chose to go and train to become an authorized OSHA trainer.  I taught OSHA in a labor college for about 8 years before moving on from that position.

I then chose to go deeper with the safety training after crossing paths with my current employer.  She is a champion for women and a big sister to me.  Our goal is for me to finish my career at the shop.  As the safety officer, I will serve as a protector of the shop.  That is a wonderful opportunity.  I have a lot to do to build our company safety program once I finish training.  I have a few more exams and courses to pass before achieving my goal.

I studied in the fall and took the CHST Certified Health Safety Technician exam in October 2019 and passed.  I then tried to take the ASP Associate Safety Professional exam only two weeks later and I didn’t pass.  My mistake for not giving myself enough time to study.  This is especially evident since the content is a lot more math and more safety content that I didn’t give myself enough time to study.  Those are lessons learned so I must give myself more time and be very disciplined with it.

I plan to give myself two months to study daily as it is a job to go take the ASP again and pass it.  I will then give myself one month to study daily and then take the CSP Certified Safety Professional exam.  I know that any other smaller certifications that may expire, I must renew them in a timely manner.  Once I ensure that all of my pre-requisites are complete and I pass the CSP, I will sign up for the NYC Department of Buildings approved 40 hour Site Safety Manager course and take the class.  Once I complete the class, I can schedule the subsequent exam.  I must pass background checks and have no child support issues in order to get my NYC Site Safety Manager license.  Once I complete the course, I will re-emerge and become my shops Safety Officer.  I will also become registered with the Metropolitan Transit Authority.  I will end my working career in safety with no intention on returning to the tools.

I believe in helping other people, while serving as a mentor, to guide them through the process if they also want to follow my career path.  In the next few months as I finish my safety training, I will offer the courses that I have taken since 2013 until I officially become a site safety manager in the future blog posts.  Questions are welcomed if you have an interest.  If not, that is perfectly fine.  At some point, I will start a YouTube channel to speak about my journey and to help others navigate their career path.  I will let you all know when that time comes. 🙂

This is all I have in the tank for this evening.  As always, thanks for stopping by to read my blog from all over the world.  Be safe with your family and enjoy this Memorial weekend!

Cheers!

hello everyone!!

I hope you all are enjoying your summer!?!  Keep cool and be safe!  I am focusing on studying.
I shared above the screenshot of the e-book that I listen to to aid with my studying.  I am writing while listening to the e-book entitled, “Safety Professional’s Reference and Study Guide”.  This book was issued as per the purchase of the (BCSP) Board of Certified Safety Professionals- the official organization that issues many safety exams, courses, and provides the safety certifications upon successful completion.
I have been heavily involved in studying for my (ASP) Associate Safety Professional exam.  I am also studying for the (CSP) Certified Safety Professional exam- I intend to take after the ASP exam. I intend to take the ASP in the next few weeks.  I have discovered that, during my study journey for this particular exam, not all ASP study programs are the same.  I am going to share what I have been using to help me study for the exams so that it may be helpful to you on your safety journey.
I attempted to first use flash cards.  They worked for my (CHST) Certified Health Safety Technician exam that I passed in October.  For whatever reason, the information was so overwhelming, the cards appeared to not work as well as they have for me in the past.  I then chose to go with the online study, via the Institute of Safety & Systems Management, Inc.  It cost about $250 for just the written online program.  I didn’t purchase the videos since I didn’t want to initially spend $1000 on the study program.  I am glad that I didn’t waste the video money on that program- in hindsight.  However, I must say that the math portion is super helpful to ensure that you can get your head back into the math concepts.  They do walk you through the math problems to help solve.  I was studying like crazy for weeks the bank of test questions.  Once I started scoring consistently high on the practice exams, I arranged to take the exam.  I was so anticipating passing and working on the next safety exam.  Boy…. a cold hard reality slap sure hit me in the face when I started the exam!
I wanted to scream when I was sitting in the exam!!  The study material’s test questions was NOTHING like the ASP exam questions!!  I didn’t feel confident with my responses at all!  I had an hour left to review the questions-an opportunity that I usually take.  I walked out and so hoped that the proctor would give me a passing grade.  Upon discovery of my results, I was soo disgusted!!  I felt like a I had a HUGE punch to the gut after walking out of the test center!!  I was screaming in my head on the ride home, “I NEVER FAIL TESTS!!!” I was a 3.8-4.0 student in high school & college.  Getting an F was unheard of in my educational career!  I was absolutely mortified and ashamed with the test results!
My ashamed and angry disposition molded into the need to, “figure out what happened?”  I needed to get off the ground where I fell, get up, and find a solution to pass the exam.  I didn’t spend the money on the full program.  However, I was not confident that would have helped since the practice questions were nothing like the exam questions.  I then decided to see how much the study program, issued via the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, would cost me.  The BCSP ExamCORE Training was $1000/course.  If you get the ASP & CSP program, you save $100.  I pulled the trigger and went for the combo since I must do it anyway.  I must say the training is more intense and has much more study modules compared to the ISSM online course!  They offer you an opportunity to take a pre-exam.  I opted to do that and I saw that my test result was the EXACT SAME as the ASP exam score.  This has given me confidence that once I score consistently above an 85, it is time to take the exam and I will pass.  I have gotten through almost 200 tutorial video modules and now running through tons of practice questions.  My goals is to get above an 85 practice test score and then go take the test.
I have learned that one must spend the money on the course in order to get the correct safety related study material.  It is wise to go with the study program that comes from the organization that issues the exam. I have learned that I did spend time on getting my head back into the math so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.  I plan to get back on here and blog after I pass the ASP exam.  I will do the same after the CSP exam.  I will then blog after I sit in the NYC DOB 40 Hr Site Safety Manager course- after I pass the CSP exam.  Stay tuned for my safety journey within the construction industry.
I am going back to studying and shall speak with you all soon! Wish me luck! 🙂

hello everyone!

I have not written to you all in awhile; my apologies.  I have been deeply engrossed in studying for a few very important safety exams.  They consume a tremendous amount of time.  The fear of failure is tremendous.  I am looking forward to the next chapter of my career in safety.  Admittedly, I struggled to study and pass the (ASP) Associate Safety Profession by the end of August.  The safety material was not easy and required a specific type of study content in order to pass the exam.  After discovering my original study material didn’t work out, I chose to use BCSP ExamCore tutorials.  BCSP is the same company that generates the exam and provides the certifications within the safety industry.  The study material contains at least 100 video tutorials, 50 practice study questions, and the 200 mock exam.  I completed the video tutorials and religiously went through the practice study questions.  Once a week, I would do the mock exam to check my score.  Once you get a score higher than 80, it is recommended to go sit for the exam.  Once I passed the ASP, I shifted gears and started the (CSP) Certified Safety Professional ExamCore study tutorial.

I was required to go through all of the videos and then rigorously go through all of the 50 practice questions until the content was seared into my mind.  Once I got a high 70 score on the mock exam, I set up the CSP exam.  By mid-November, I passed the exam and immediately switched gears to start studying for the NYC DOB Site Safety Manager exam.  For the month of October, I had to sit in the 40 Hour Site Safety Manager course.  I also had to re-take the OSHA 30 and another 30+ hours of required course work that must be taken prior to applying for the site safety manager license.  I had to receive the SST card via using the DOB course curriculum guidelines.  Thank goodness for my union since they supplied the majority of the required courses in order to meet this educational requirement.

The pile of paperwork and hoops required to apply for the Site Safety Manager license is a lot.  The paperwork is available online to download.  I found out, after printing the paperwork, that it is required to type write out the forms.  The exam is the first step at a cost of $525- money order ONLY along with the notarized form.  I received an email from the DOB two weeks after submission for the exam invitation.  I am scheduled to sit for the exam next Monday Dec 21st.  I pray that I pass the exam the first time around.  I am unsure if there is a waiting period in the event that I fail.  I need to have my mound of paperwork notarized and ready to go for the appointment once I pass the exam.  I can work anywhere in the country as a Site Safety Manager which is great.  My current plan is to remain as the Safety Manager for my WBE electrical contractor here in NYC.  It is less stressful than being a project manager.

Ever since the 2008 recession, I felt like I was in a tiny employment box with my electrician skill set.  It pleases me that I have developed more education and opportunities since that time frame.  It is super important to me that I never again endure more than a year of unemployment until I retire.  I believe that I endured a total of about 3-4 years of no unemployment as a result of the 2008 recession.  The best things in life are learning from past harsh life lessons and working to not repeat them in the future.

I have been studying via recording while reading aloud and posting my study content onto YouTube.  I currently have over 20 site safety manager study videos on YouTube.  Check out a sample of my amateur site safety manager study guide videos on YouTube (I need to learn how to get into editing):

I have been repeatedly playing it back to myself.  I noticed there is not much currently available on YouTube- as far as available study material.  I was hoping to find someone’s site safety manager study material; I yielded no results.  Perhaps that is a niche of unique content that I can get into deeper at some point on YouTube.  Why not work to provide a roadmap to other folks attempting to dive into this safety study journey?  I know the holidays are around the corner and I need to market my book.  I have been slacking on my book marketing.  I need to get my children’s book, “Not All Girls Play With Dolls”, finished and onto Amazon too.  It is something that I have on the back burner.  The next goal is to work on my own illustrations and produce some more children’s book under the “girl power” theme.

It is time to go back to my studying and work on passing and smashing that exam next Monday.  I must score above 70% on 80 questions for a 3 hour time frame.  Wish me luck and speak with you all soon.

Cheers!

Leslie M. Jasper
