Vol. #17: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Are you braving the bitter cold and wind on this blistery Tuesday evening!? With continued cold winds, the air is frightful on any exposed skin! Be sure to bundle up if you are in a cold climate. If you are in a warmer climate, then you can only imagine the cold and snow drifting around in your path as you walk. I’m quite sure that you don’t think of us freezing our asses up in the north! May your Tuesday be both uneventful and efficient as possible. Hey, check out my 16-year-old son John’s “Call To Action Marketing” business; it will also be known on social media by the hashtag #CTAMarketing. If you could find him under his name and business name and connect with him, that would be highly appreciated. Now, this post is intended to share even more work of some independent authors, such as myself, and earn some good karma in the process. Why not offer you a taste of a variety of authors with different content? Let me know if you have discovered a new author during this “Showcased Author Series”? My objective is to pick out different authors that offer a variety of media content. For the record, I know nothing about the author other than what is showcased in the author article that was shared, via Awesome Gang. Feel free to copy and paste and share this content on your blog, if you like. As an author, if you want to add more information, drop it down in the comment section below and I will edit and add at my earliest convenience. For now, I’m connecting with the authors in an effort to build my author network. Hopefully, they will follow me back on social media. I’m game to cross promote each other on social media as well. Just let me know or re-tweet one of my posts and I will automatically return the favor. I’m totally cool with many ways to help each other market each other. When you are a small content creator, it is important to help others out. Do you have any requests for a specific author or style of content? Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. Here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Ange DuBellet

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am ANGE.
I am a retired “worker” and I now appear as an erotic writer. I’ve written a lot of books, but I’m reworking and publishing them right only now.
It seems that in life, we don’t do what matters most until too late, for various reasons.
I have already published two books and two more will follow in the coming months.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Trans Hotel”. Staying awake until late in the night inspired me. I mean staying up late at night, out of bed, out in the blue, sometimes hoping that dawn never comes because that moment is magical. I like to go to public places at night like highway restaurants, or a laundromat that never closes, or a hotel lobby. One night, I was sitting in the lobby of a cheap hotel, sipping a mini-bottle of Jack Daniel’s, snow started to fall. The concierge looked bored. We were in the stillness of the blue. It was the beginning of my novel “Trans Hotel”. The magic but also the despair that brings solitude. I imagined ghosts and people with deep stories who had nowhere to go.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I wander in hotels’ lobby. I pretend that I have a room there. I do the same in airports, pretending that I am waiting for my flight.
I take an extraordinarily long time to shop something at convenience stores to listen to what people say.
I go to municipal zoos and study animals’ habits.
I drink very fancy and expensive vinagars. That’s how I avoid drinking too much alcohol.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Lots.
I love Jack London and Hemingway. There is also Flaubert. All of them have deep influence on me.
I also love deeply Mary Oliver for her poetry. And Robert Frost, of course. These are the author I am made of.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a book that goes in the opposite direction of Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”. The main character is a woman who turns into an elephant instead of an “ugly” beetle. She won’t finish in a trash can like Kafka’s insect but travel the world. She will free herself after a devastating marriage. She will be the antithesis of Kafka. All the crazy sex you can experience with a trunk as a very dominant woman!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t know. After all, despite my age, I am a new author! It can’t be Amazon itself since I write erotic porn and Amazon doesn’t allow advertising for this category. So, I am trying elsewhere. This site seems nice and not very costly for an indie.
As an erotic porn writer, there may be erotic show or salons. We’ll see.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, not only for the writing but in general in life:

What you do must make SENSE to you.

Don’t care much about the rest. Mary Oliver was telling that you can live with just what it takes to feed a chicken and be cheerful with it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Watch out!
No, more seriously, it may be quite the opposite: don’t care too much about it.

What are you reading now?
I am re-reading “The Matamorphosis” by Franz Kafka. I frequently read a poem by Robert Frost. I am also reading a book for children : “The Magician’s Elephant” by Kate DiCamillo. Maybe someday, I’ll write for children. For the time being, I like sex too much and it drives my writing feverishly.
On the erotic side, I just read “Taken by the Burlesque Dancer” by Margeaux Adler that is very very well done.
There is also an indie writer who usually writes romance named R.B. O’Brien. I just read very good poetry from her “Ruin my Lipstick.”

What’s next for you as a writer?
I think I will stay in the hard-core erotic niche for quite a while. It drives my energy. I know there is a lot of very bad writing in this category. But a good porn story is very powerful. This is my goal to achieve.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

  1. The Old Man and the Sea – Hemingway
Because it gives me hope that life is possible without something big (a fish here) even though you catch it, the purpose is elsewhere.
  2. The Homer’s Osyssey.
Since in your question, I am alone on a desert island, it makes a lot of sense.
  3. Trois Contes by Gustave Flaubert (Three Tales)
The writing is so perfect that I think I could discover more and more in it on my desert Island
  4. Outer Dark by Cormac McCarthy
I couldn’t live without darkness. And this is the darkest. Even the title is dark since it states that darkness comes from outside.

Showcased Author- 2.) John Poitier

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Well, I am sixteen years old and I currently live in The Bahamas(where I am from). I am an uncle( basically one of my best achievements so far). Reading and writing are two of my favorite things to do and ever since I was extremely young, I have always loved doing that.

So far, I have written and published one book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Mangoes in the Summertime was inspired by, unsurprisingly, my love for food. From there, I actually made a correlation between mangoes and joy. Everyone likes mangoes, because…they’re mangoes! So Mangoes in the Summertime stands for the happiness(mangoes) in our lives, during a given period of time(summertime).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write everything from the back- meaning that all of my stories, poems, or whatever, are written in the reverse order. This helps me to flesh out the details of the story and see where I’ve been. That way, I know where I can start from…if that makes sense.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tracy Deonn(the author of Legendborn) is definitely one of those authors who have inspired me with their works. Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is also one of my major inspirations.

What are you working on now?
Time will tell…

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media for sure! Facebook, Instagram, etc…

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write something that will, at the very least, add a little bit of joy into the world.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do anything.

What are you reading now?
Right now, I am re-reading The Color Purple by Alice Walker and Wicked by Gregory Macguire.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would love to branch out into different genres of writing(fantasy, drama, non-fiction, etc) while also learning new styles of writing. Furthermore, I plan on writing more about my culture and national origins, for I do feel like these things are essential to my development as a black, Bahamian author. As a writer, I also hope to do some sort of collaboration with my favorite authors.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh wow! Ok, so I would bring…Mangoes in the Summertime, The Color Purple, Percy Jackson, and the Lightning Thief, Legendborn, and The Journey.

Showcased Author- 3.) Carrie Close

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Carrie Close was born and raised in Maine, where she is currently pursuing a BFA in Creative Writing from the University of Maine at Farmington. She and her boyfriend Josh, have a son named Zephyr and a daughter named Zarya. Her first collection of poetry and short stories, What Have I Done? is forthcoming from Unsolicited Press in March, 2022.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
What Have I Done? is a collection of poetry and short stories that I worked on for several years. A lot of the pieces I wrote from prompts given in my writing workshops in school, while others were inspired from my lived experiences, or pulled from my imagination. They only became a collection when one of my professors insisted I put it all together.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
These days I mostly write while my baby daughter climbs all over me and tries to get to my laptop. Although my preference is to write undisturbed, with a drink in hand.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Anne Carson, “Glass, Irony, and God”
James Baldwin, “Giovanni’s Room”

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a novel, about a girl named Simone. There are some short pieces about her in “What Have I Done?” I’ve been working on her story for a long time, almost 10 years. I hope to be finished with it soon.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t know, this is my first book, so this is all entirely new to me!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m not nearly wise enough to be giving advice.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep writing. Even if you think it’s bad. Don’t look back. Just keep pushing forward, you can edit later.

What are you reading now?
I’ve been reading lots of poetry. I just finished Deke Dangle Dive by Gibson FayLeBlanc and Lawrence Booth’s Book of Visions by Maurice Manning

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing my novel and getting that published hopefully! Oh, and I’ll be finishing up my BFA in the fall, and then I plan on applying to MFA programs.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“Glass, Irony, and God”
“Giovanni’s Room”
“Pride and Prejudice”
“The Art of Racing in the Rain”

I recently shared my latest short story that has been loaded up to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library on Amazon. This is short story #11 entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. I share the various challenges I faced and lessons learned along the way. The previous short story is entitled: #10: “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. I decided to write about some life lessons such as guarding your personal information, managing nasty rumors, combating sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism. Overall, the construction culture has improved dramatically over the past 25-years. Developing both a thick skin and a sharp tongue are key tools needed to survive various jobsite antics. I hope you learn something from this short story. There are more to come. These short stories are now also available as Verbally Disastrous podcast episodes.

Showcased Author- 1.) Ben Le Fort

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Ben Le Fort, I am an economist by day and a personal finance writer by night. I live in Waterloo, Ontario with my wife Trish, son Harrison and cat Trixie.

I’ve been writing about personal finance since 2018 and in 2022 I self-published my first book “The Financial Freedom Equation.”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of the book is The Financial Freedom Equation. This book is a summation of everything I learned over a 10-year period where I paid off $50,000 in debt and put myself in a financial position to do work that I love and help those closest to me who were struggling financially.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write 5 blog posts per week. I spend one day writing all the posts, another day working on the headlines for each post, and another day finding the right cover images for each post.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
In the personal finance space, my favorite book is probably “The 7 Most Important Equations for Your Retirement: The Fascinating People and Ideas Behind Planning Your Retirement Income” by Moshe A. Milevsky. It’s a brilliant book on retirement savings.

In the non-fiction space, my favorite series is a song of ice and fire. George, we are rooting for you to finish the books!

What are you working on now?
I am working on my second book, with the working title “Invest like an economist.”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I write articles on Medium dot com and I have a Substack newsletter.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get on a writing platform like Medium, write and publish as much as you can, collect feedback from readers and turn your best ideas into a book to self publish on Amazon.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best investment you can ever make is in yourself.

What are you reading now?
“Turning pro” by Steven Pressfield

What’s next for you as a writer?
My goals are to continue to grow my readers on Substack and publish a new book every 1-3 years.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The final-yet to be written- entries in a Song of Ice and Fire!

Showcased Author- 2.) Erin Leigh

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the mother of four children. I was born and raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. I attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee for my undergraduate education, where I competed in Division 1 cross country and track and field for four years. I attended Loyola University Chicago School of Law where I received my J.D. I enjoy swimming, running, reading, hiking, biking, playing the piano, and spending time outdoors.

I have enjoyed writing since I was a child. I find writing to be rewarding, challenging, and fulfilling. I love journaling, brainstorming ideas, researching issues, and writing about topics that are meaningful to me. I published my first nonfiction book in January 2022.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Navigating the Newborn Months and Beyond is my latest book. As the mother of four children, I wanted to help other mothers feel less overwhelmed and more confident.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I consider myself to be old school in my writing habits. I make lists of ideas on paper. I outline. I research. I write. I revise. I revise. I revise. It may sound boring but it works for me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I enjoy reading books by Lisa Genova, Kristin Hannah, Lisa See, John Steinbeck, Glennon Doyle, Jodi Piccolo, Ken Follett, and many other authors. Untamed by Glennon Doyle is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. A few others that made an impact on me were A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, Becoming, Educated, and the Book Thief.

What are you working on now?
I am outlining and doing research for my next book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Word of mouth

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I believe outlining is still important for any written piece of work. Double-checking and triple-checking your sources is also highly recommended. If you can hire a professional editor and book cover designer, it is worth it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’ve received great advice from many people in my life. My mom, my coaches, and my friends have given me incredible advice over the years. “Getting out of your comfort zone” is one piece of advice I appreciate the most. Being uncomfortable can be difficult but very rewarding.

What are you reading now?
The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a list of things I would like to write about, so I look forward to many years of research and writing.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Untamed, the Bible, Grapes of Wrath, and Gone with the Wind

Showcased Author- 3.) Catherine Berra

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an avid writer, poet, equestrian, and world traveler, a dedicated mother and friend, a and true lover of nature. I hold a BA in communications/business management from Metropolitan State University in Denver and an Animals and Human Health graduate certification from the University of Denver. For more than twenty years, my career in Washington, D.C., revolved around senior-level logistical and management support to a U.S. Ambassador/philanthropist and technical writing at the U.S. Department of State. Upon my return to Colorado in 2014, I resumed her passion for writing and giving back to the world. I live in Littleton, Colorado, am the proud mother of my son Alexander Aziz, and relish my role as caretaker of my rescue horse, Dancer.
My previous works include:
Lucid Life: A Collection of Lyrical Poetry (Amazon)

Contact me at Sassypantspress@comcast.net

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is These Stories Are True… I S#!+ You Not: A Humorous Look at Online Dating for the Unsuspecting Older Human. This book was a labor of love, or shall I say the result of way too many ridiculously funny bad online dates. I also include stories from men and other friends, but wanted to focus on the humorous nature of human behavior when it comes to modern-day dating for older humans.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’ve been writing poetry since I was a young girl. My biggest inspiration was Emily Dickinson. The most unusual writing habit that I have is that I often wake up in the middle of the night and write an entire poem that just flows from where, I do not know.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many books have influenced me. When I was a young girl, I read The Diary of Ann Frank which, to this day, has impacted the way I view the world and the human condition; how human beings tolerate and manage through devastation by depending on their vision of hope.

What are you working on now?
I might just write a sequel to this last book because there are so many stories and so many funny adventures that people have related to me. Otherwise, my next book will somehow cover the need for levity and humor when dealing with death; whether due to illness or age.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have recently started using TikTok (#booktok) and Instagram to engage with people in my age range. They are good passive marketing avenues – plus they are fun!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stay true to yourself. It is never too late to start anything. And…everyone has stories to tell. I’d also advise that if you are going to self-publish like I did, to hire editors, layout artists and publishing consultants (My Word Publishing) to help you navigate the process.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Risk it.

What are you reading now?
I did read You Have to Kiss A Lot of Frogs since it was similar to my new book. Laurie Graff, the author, has been tremendously supportive of my new book and even gave me an endorsement! I’m also reading, Sgt. Reckless, The Perfect Horse (I own a horse), and The Real Anthony Fauci.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Lot’s of marketing work, book launch parties and podcasts for 2022 to get the word out about my new book. It takes work, but it’s all good.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Jane Eyre, Sense and Sensibility, Night, Rumi poetry

Vol. #15: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Are you braving the bitter cold and wind on this blistery Monday morning!? OMG! With the 19 MPH winds, the air is so painful on my exposed skin! Be sure to wear a hat and bundle up if you are in a cold climate. If you are in a warmer climate, then just imagine the cold and snow drifting around in your path as you walk. May your Monday be both uneventful and efficient as possible. It was a good game last night! I enjoyed meeting new people and socializing with my pal for the Super Bowl.

Showcased Author- 1.) Lucille J. Knight

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was raised in the state of Alaska and lived there for almost 20 years. I currently live in Missouri with my husband and our two Australian Shepherds, Ham and Bean.

I just released my first novel!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Hexen Blood: Damnation is my debut novel. I took some inspiration from Beauty and the Beast. Especially when creating my main character, Eve. Eve is basically Belle, longing for something more, not quite fitting in with “normal” people, and Alucard is her Beast, surly, angsty, and struggling with his humanity. This wasn’t intentional at first, but once I realized I had that dynamic going I just embraced it!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to write in the dark… I think that might be unusual?

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Reading Star Wars novels as a kid was incredibly influential to my writing throughout the years. As I matured, I turned to other sources as well. Namely J.R.R. Tolkien and Mercedes Lackey.

What are you working on now?
I’m swept up in a couple projects right now. Namely, a sword and sorcery meets dark fantasy series with some inspiration from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Rurouni Kenshin. With dragons. You can’t forget the dragons or they get cranky!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As I’m a new author I’m still working these things out and finding my groove. I’m expecting it to be a trial and error process for a little while until I find the strategies that work best for me.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Find an editor (or two!) that you trust and listen to what they have to say. My editors have been invaluable to me. Also, stock plenty of chocolate and coffee!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Anything from Joanna Penn at the Creative Penn. She is a wealth of knowledge and advice for authors at various levels of their careers.

What are you reading now?
I just started reading the first Witcher book, Blood of Elves!

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing! I have several trilogies and series planned that I’m very excited to finish and share with the world.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Definitely Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion, Kenobi by John Jackson Miller, and I, Jedi by Michael A. Stackpole.

Showcased Author- 2.) B. Frohby

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Describing oneself is always the hardest question: How to walk that fine line between self-praise and self-effacing, especially when you’re promoting a self-published book?

For my attempt I will begin and end with my loves. What else is important, or what better way to help my readers relate to myself and my characters? I love to travel abroad, but I haven’t been everywhere. I love to read widely, but my habit is to stick to the classics. I love to cook, and am getting some serious chops as a pizza baker. Who doesn’t love pizza? I can relate.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Death to Janus, inspired by the general sentiment surrounding the titular villain who becomes a despotic, seemingly divine figure to the ancients in the spirit of Joseph Conrad’s enigmatic Mr. Kurtz in Heart of Darkness, or even the “Naziesque” alien dictator who subverts a world culture in an original Star Trek episode. The type of charismatic leader who upends the natural order, violates the Prime Directive and makes playthings of humanity. Without fail such petty tyrants are better off…removed from power.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
For years I would have said it was my singular obsession with spinning this yarn morning, day and night, but somehow I doubt that sets me apart. Nowadays it’s a different story: I’ve taken to editing my work during my morning Peloton rides, and this despite the intense workout, profuse sweating, blaring soundtrack and frankly gorgeous spin-class instructor that might otherwise distract me from reading the novel at hand. Whatever the case it’s become the perfect recipe for concentrating on my work while staying in shape at the same time, and it goes without saying I can’t ignore the instructor’s charms completely. A double victory.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Above all my attraction to irreverent sci-fi authors like Alfred Bester, Kurt Vonnegut, Roger Zelazny, the list goes on. Too many books have influenced me personally to take stab at listing them here, but when it comes to my own work I’ve drawn inspiration from classic books set in the ancient Mediterranean world (as an aside, Spartacus by Howard Fast was an unexpectedly powerful and poignant work, and it is easy to see why Ben Hur was immensely popular in its day); several of the “classical” works themselves, some of which I thankfully held on to after college (break out the Plutarch!); and lastly the obscure 1939 alternate history novel Lest Darkness Fall by L. Sprague de Camp, about a history professor unexpectedly teleported to the ancient Byzantine Empire, of all places. And while I can’t blame old L. Sprague for eschewing the Roman Empire as the setting for that already ambitious novel, I can and should object to the deplorable anti-Islamic sentiments he inks in a bizarre afterword to the story. Give it a read if you’re more than passably interested in an experimental 1930s alternate history novel, and by all means ignore the addendum if you don’t want ruin an otherwise decent adventure story. If it were me, I would suggest skipping his book entirely and immediately burying your nose in Death to Janus.

What are you working on now?
These days I’m hard at work self-promoting self-published books, which means enduring all the lingering doubt that entails while nursing the unyielding hope that when I find my audience I can resume writing in earnest and as a full-time novelist, the starry-eyed fiction author’s dream since time immemorial. Optimism is my life’s blood in this venture, plus an engaging writing style and a heartfelt, genre-blending sci-fi adventure story of friendship and self-sacrifice that teases an epic, if I had to describe it myself, and keep in mind I know how it ends.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Perseverance perseverance perseverance, also an author’s profile on twitter (one among millions), a free book promotion every now and again (as enticing as any free literature from dubious sources), and this very interview, truly my first moment to shine if ever there was one. I am grateful for the opportunity, Awesome Gang!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never forget that as artists we have to be perfectionists. And we are artists of a sort, where the page is a medium and the best authors can practically paint with words. Also they use the entire canvas, they know how to convey big ideas obliquely, where to avoid the pitfalls…the whole bit, plus an absolute economy of materials, in our case words. A thousand artist metaphors can spring to mind now that I’ve invoked a few, and surely it is better to roll with that technique than to risk miring the plot and discouraging the reader. Keep the story moving and let their mind’s eye fill in the details wherever you can get away with it. We’re not actually painting, after all.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Never take a job you can’t quit.” That was a professor’s reply when I once requested an extension on a paper due to my National Guard obligations, and jokingly asked if he knew of any special tricks to get out of the army early. He didn’t laugh, either, but that was his immediate response and you could tell it was an old axiom, doubtless passed down to him at some point. I like to think so. It’s certainly one for the ages, and true.

What are you reading now?
Always a handful of books at once: I’ve just finished rereading the Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin for probably the fourth time, and of course that story lingers. I’m finishing Alone in the Light by Benjamin W. Bass, a friend from college and the army and a fellow self-publisher, with his wife A.J. Bass’s debut novel Paige’s Story to follow. Meanwhile I’m halfway through Jacques Vallée’s Passport to Magonia, for some unique insight into what in the hell UFOs might be, and still putting off cracking open The Tale of Genji, a Christmas gift from my wife, who knows my love of giant tomes.

What’s next for you as a writer?
It is up to the readers to decide! I could write all day, but what is supply without demand?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

  1. The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester – It’s hilarious, it’s eccentric, it’s creative, it’s meaningful and heartfelt, and of course it’s classic sci-fi.
  2. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire – Gigantic, endlessly fascinating and Gibbon is a master storyteller. I might as well bring the unabridged addition, which probably hasn’t been read cover-to-cover in a long, long time.
  3. Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny – I had no idea that sci-fi could be this cool. And I’m talking about sci-fi, for God’s sake. So cool.

B. Frohby Amazon Profile: https://www.amazon.com/B.-Frohby/e/B09FYFV42H

Showcased Author- 3.) Angela Lam

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a writing instructor at Gotham Writers’ Workshop and the author of ten published books. Love Again, the first book in the Women of the Crush series, debuts February 28, 2022.

In addition to writing and teaching, I am a landscape artist and an avid reader.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Love Again was inspired by my love of senior softball. My husband belongs to a tournament league, and the women in the stands always nagged me to write about the sport and include the love lives of the wives and girlfriends for a soap opera-like drama. After several years, I succumbed to the peer pressure and the Women of the Crush series was born.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I get up at 5 AM to write. I used to listen to music, but now I babysit a geriatric dog who needs constant attention.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Sophie Kinsella introduced me to chick-lit. Amy Tan inspired me to dive deep into my culture. Michael Chabon gave me permission to write outside my comfort zone. And Ernest Hemingway reminds me to write succinctly. My books tend to be shorter.

What are you working on now?
I just submitted the final book in the Women of the Crush series to my publisher, The Wild Rose Press. I am currently querying my midlife memoir, The Fool and the Magician.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still exploring the best methods. Before the pandemic, I had the most success with in-person events, including book signings and book festivals. My contemporary sweetheart romance, Friends First, debuted in the midst of the pandemic, and I feel I didn’t give that book the launch it deserved.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make writing a priority. You might have to sacrifice time, sleep, or other hobbies, but you need to make that investment to see results. Consistency is important, whether you write every day or once a week. Find a community of writers. Take a class to improve your craft skills. And, most importantly, respect the need to lay fallow between big projects. Even the fields need a season to replenish the soil. Give yourself permission to just be. Don’t worry. The words will return when they are ready.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do not be tossed away. Too often we have ideas of what a successful writing career looks like, and if we don’t achieve that goal, we fall into despair. A healthier approach is to put in the effort and let go of any expected results.

What are you reading now?
I just finished Dear Memory by Victoria Chang, a lovely meditation on family history, personal memories, and the sense of self.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I don’t know. I am open to the universe.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Emily’s Quest by L.M. Montgomery, and whatever two books I have purchased but haven’t read yet. Today those books would be What Happens in Chicago by Liz Crowe, a hot contemporary romance, and The Energy Codes by Dr. Sue Morter, a mind-body-spiritual healing instruction manual.

Vol. #14: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

How are you spending your day on this peaceful Sunday evening!? May your weekend also either be uneventful and efficient as possible. As I mentioned in previous posts, my 16-year old son, named John Collazo, is in the process of building his social network on social media. He has taken a recent interest in marketing and wants to build his brand and help creators promote their creative work. His business enterprise that he is building is called, “Call To Action Marketing”. Call To Action Marketing will be known on social media by his hashtag #CTAMarketing. If you could find him under his name and business name and connect with him, that would be highly appreciated. This post is intended to share even more work of some independent authors, such as myself, and earn some good karma in the process. Why not offer you a taste of a variety of authors with different content?

Showcased Author- 1.) A. G. Fleury

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My full name is Alain Gerard Fleury. I am a Canadian author born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario(Central/Eastern Canada). Currently, I reside in Kelowna, British Columbia(West coast) where it’s been my home these past 23 years. My fascination with writing began as far back as elementary school when we had short story assignments. I did not start writing seriously until September 2017. I’ve written two novels so far. The first is still in its first draft stage. The second one is my first published novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my book is called Kill Per View. It is a work of fiction which mainly covers crime drama, science fiction, and political thriller genres. The inspiration behind the idea was a “what if…” scenario. What if every country in the world adopted the death penalty? How would that society function? From there, the idea continued growing along with a protagonist(a Corrections Manager from the Toronto prison) and the antagonist( a serial killer). The title of the book is inspired by the reality tv show(same title) within my story where executions are live streamed on a pay per view channel.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if this particular habit is considered unusual. I create a list of “chapter ideas”. I think of different situations and write them down. Good or bad, I write down as many as I can think of. Then, I sift through them to see which ones best suit the flow of the story and the rest are discarded.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Authors who have influenced me the most would have to be Stephen King, Dean Koontz, H.G. Wells, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

What are you working on now?
My third novel I’m working on is a suspense/thriller where the main theme is “secret society”. Not “Illuminati” nor “One World Order” either. I can’t expand on the story at this time.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, Goodreads has been pretty useful since new authors like myself need as much exposure as possible. We can plug our books through our blogs, discussion groups, and access other resources from other authors who submit their suggestions and vice versa.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m still learning as I go. So, the best advice I can give other new authors prior to making big decisions is research, research, research.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve heard from many authors refers to writing the first draft of a story; don’t stress yourself out trying to write a perfect story during this first stage. Just keep writing!

What are you reading now?
Jaws by Peter Benchley.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I must finish writing the first draft of my third story. Afterwards, I wish to begin a fourth story which I already have a two-page outline written so far. Other than that, I must keep plugging my first published novel(Kill Per View).

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The War of The Worlds by H.G. Wells
The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom
The Lord of The Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien

Showcased Author- 2.) William Mesusan

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written two books in The Andalusian Trilogy series. I’m currently working on the third book and researching a dystopian novel. A trip to northern Spain, and subsequent historical research, helped me decide to focus on 10th century Islamic Spain during the glory days of the Umayyad Caliphate. THE GALICIAN WOMAN, the first book in this trilogy, inspired additional research and a trip to southern Spain. These experiences led me to develop the two additional storylines.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest book is THE BONE RELIC. It was inspired by a trip to southern Spain and research into the Great Mosque of Cordoba. I learned that the mosque kept a sacred relic, the arm bone of the prophet Muhammad, in its treasury. What if robbers stole the holy relic? I asked myself. This became the basis for the second book in the series. My protagonist, Solomon Levy, has to embark on a medieval adventure in order to preserve the legitimacy of Europe’s most enlightened culture.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My unusual habit is not to have any set habits when it comes to writing. Oftentimes, I’ll wake up in the morning, in that twilight state between waking and the dream, and snippets of conversation and/or scenes will come into my imagination. Sometimes it’s after dinner. There is no set time or any one thing that might create an inspiration. I write mornings, afternoons, and nights whenever I have a stretch of time with no distractions.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I was younger I was influenced by Joseph Campbell, C.G. Jung, Anais Nin, and Erich Neumann. I read The Masks of God series, much of Jung, the Diaries of Anais Nin, and most of Neumann. Mary Ester Harding and Irene Claremont de Castillo wrote about women’s mysteries. John Fowles was my favorite novelist. I devoured all of his books. I must have read The Magus in a single sitting (or two). I was blown away. As for most other authors, I tend to read one or two of their works rather than attempt to take on an entire oeuvre.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing the third and final book in The Andalusian Trilogy series. It’s called THE LOST MANUSCRIPT. It’s serves as a prequel to the first two novels and reveals new aspects of protagonist Solomon Levy’s life and times. The role of language and books in 10th century Islamic Spain, and the Arab world’s desire to preserve the works of the Greeks, is a constant theme.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m new to self-publishing so I’m starting slow and trying to minimize expenses until the series is complete. So far I’ve used Freebooksy, Discount Bookman, Awesome Gang, free99books, and a host of other mostly free promo sites. I also publish on Amazon select for the first three months to take advantage of the five free download days they offer. I hope to expand marketing efforts in the future and try new methods.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My personal advice is to cultivate a love and receptivity for your own creative spirit. Have courage and be willing to follow where it takes you.

As for developing your craft, author Somerset Maugham wrote: “There are only three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are.”

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.

What are you reading now?
Teachings of the Buddha. But mostly research notes for my new novel. Not a lot of extra time for outside reading because I just finished editing the proof copy of THE BONE RELIC.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’d like to finish THE LOST MANUSCIPT this year and publish the story later this year or early next year. And, I’d like to complete research for a dystopian novel. I’m also a songwriter and I have half a dozen songs to put to music this year.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Gravity’s Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. If I’m going to be stranded I’m taking “long” books.

Let me know your various suggestions down the in the comment section below. Here are (3) showcased authors down below:

Showcased Author- 1.) Karen Leah Scott

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Always having a love for romance and writing, when I retired I decided to combine the two. Started off by ghostwriting Amish romance books and finally made the big move to self-publish my own. Since then I have published around nine books of my own and still going strong.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest book is entitled “Promise Me.” It was inspired by a friend who was in a relationship with a man who made all kinds of promises but never followed through.
The first two books I ever wrote were inspired by a move to Leamington, Ontario along the shores of Lake Erie. That’s where I came with the idea of a series that take place in Leamingville Meadows.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No really. I tend to spend time writing out a summary, chapter by chapter then when I begin writing, I never follow it. I go where my characters take me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Nora Robers and Danielle Steele were big influencers along with Diane Gabaldon.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on another Leamingville Meadows story about a young girl who owns her bakery trying to find the love of her life.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Right now I only use amazon and Facebook, but I’m thinking of expanding and trying some others. I always used to say I don’t care if anyone reads my books, but I actually do. If I know I have made one person feel good after reading a book, I know I have accomplished something.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid. Get those words down on paper. It will all fall into place.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write. Don’t worry about mistakes in the beginning, Get the story down on paper, then fix it.

What are you reading now?
Not reading anything – too busy writing.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To just keep on writing. Keeps me busy and my mind active.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Naughty words for nice writers, Outlander, and anything Danielle Steele

Advice: How To Manage People Issuing Negative Comments

Hello Everyone!

How are you holding up on this Sunday afternoon!? Now that Super Bowl Sunday is actually here, what are your plans? Are you betting on the Rams or the Bengals? As I mentioned before, I’m heading over to my buddy’s spot to watch the game. I have to tread through the snow, get some White Claws, and head over to his house for the game at 6PM. People are betting $$ on the game. I will live vicariously through the people betting on the game since I’m cheap as hell. I’m looking forward to the half time show! Now, I’m sharing my son John Collazo’s desire to build his, “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand and get into becoming a marketing expert. I’m sharing his brand logo and profile picture that can be found on his social media platforms down below the advice. I appreciate the help with networking with him on social media. Let’s speak about this latest round of advice. This piece of advice is about how to handle a person speaking bad about you. You have to think about as to why they are speaking bad about you? Who is this person? Where does this person fit in your world? What is the root of this bad advice? After some deep digging into the person and their motives, you can get a better idea on the motive for the negative feedback. I’ve always said that most successful people do not waste time trying to tear anyone down. They are too busy climbing and working on chasing their goals. Usually the people who feel compelled to divert energy from their own path to focus on another path are not happy. In a weird way, I feel sorry for that person. What is the best way to tell a miserable, negative person to stop wasting energy elsewhere and get back on the horse of their own path? It is hard to do without insulting them. Perhaps it is just as hard to give a person good constructive feedback while bypassing some pent up emotions. This is why it is best to take in all criticism and offer no emotion. For those looking for emotions, you starve them of what they seek. If the feedback is helpful, then you benefit. If it is not helpful, turn them into mere words in your mind. When you think about a person who goes out of their way to get an emotional reaction out of you, they are not focused on their own path. If they are not focused on their own path, then they are not working on their goals. If they are not focusing on their own goals, they will become stagnant and unhappy in their life. Sometimes we need to assess how we fell off the horse and focus on getting back on the horse. Focusing on what another person is not doing right is a distraction from your own progress. In a way, I feel sorry for people who would rather give feedback on what others are not doing right and not focus on their own pitfalls and how to get back on their own path. How do you react to negative comments? Do you starve the haters of emotions or are you feeding them? Let me stop discussing this topic and share the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What do you say to the person talking bad about you?”

By Nandkishore Deopersad

MY RESPONSE:

“We all cannot get through life without people talking bad about us to some degree. The heat from criticism varies depending on what is being accomplished. If you are an ambitious, hard worker and doing well in life, it happens even more. You have to ask as to what is the root of the bad message? I look at it like I have harmed no one along my life path. If anything, I try my best to encourage and uplift people in need. Therefore, the bad comments do not stem from accusations on evil deeds. Perhaps the person doesn’t like my approach, via using words and/or actions? My approach somehow ruffles their feathers. You have to step back and take a logical, non-emotional approach as to who is speaking badly about you. Who are they? Where do they fit in your life? Are they on the outside? Are they offering constructive criticism? Is the critic giving you a view and matching feedback that is vital to improving your efficiency within your business? Are they criticizing you from the couch? (those people are the worst!) Why is this critic frustrated with you? Instead of approaching you directly, they speak with friends, in your mutual social circle, and are counting on the critical issues getting back to you at some point? Those kinds of people are toxic who should be cut off as much as possible. If you don’t have courage to give feedback to a person directly, you have no business speaking behind a person’s back. More often than not, highly successful people are not the folks who are speaking poorly about you. Most of the people who are speaking poorly are not happy within their own realm and have not achieved the same level of accomplishments. Instead of focusing their energy on their own goals, they waste energy on critiquing your actions and goals. Often times, it is best to just take the “advice” on the chin and keep it moving. If you give a reaction, you are going to give the person what they wanted in the first place. Perhaps they want to see you react in either an angry or emotional manner. Go ahead and starve them of what they seek. If the person is looking out for your best interest, then thank them for the feedback, write it down, and think about it when it doesn’t sting you emotionally. If it is for your best interest yet stings, it will make you better in the long run so that is good. React the exact same if the feedback is not intended for your best interest. Anyone can react crazy to criticism. A person who can harness their emotions, within the winds of negativity, are a force to be reckoned with in life. If you allow yourself to be semi-blinded by emotion, it will slow down down your pace and momentum. Life is entirely too short to allow anyone else to slow down your momentum. Don’t let anyone slow you down to where you are now down to their speed. You will have accomplished what the critic set out to do. The bigger the “Army of Trolls” builds up behind you, you must be doing something right. Yes, people tend to kick others when they are down. However, the level of energy your personal “Troll Army” wastes to get your attention is impressive! When you think about it, it is sad that they feel so compelled to dedicate and waste their precious energy reserves on your life path. It is at that point where you may pity their plight. These same people absolutely can’t stand to see people doing better than them! We all have the same 24/hours in a day. Some people make the most of their valuable time while others allow themselves to waste time being idle or fear of failure or lack confidence. Many paths in life require a tremendous amount of grit and determination. People don’t see that grind; they just see the fruits at the finish line. In order for you to not get consumed by the critics, you must view it differently. It is actually even more amazing that complete strangers on the internet make it their life mission to tear fellow strangers down. There must be this sense of power when you perceive that you hold another person’s emotions “hostage”. It’s important to let that negative energy slide off your back like rain water and keep climbing with the same energy and pace as before! May you have much success and continued determination! #ConstructionTales”

Hopefully my advice blog post helps someone out today. The goal for today is to encourage a person to keep grinding and climbing. Let me know if you agree or disagree with my advice? If you hold a different position, why do you believe the way you do? Hopefully, I helped the author with managing another person with either criticism and/or just negative feedback. Advice: Dealing With Someone Who Has Text Message Meltdowns

Hello Everyone!

How the hell are you doing this evening!? Now that Super Bowl Sunday is actually tomorrow, do you have plans? I’m heading over to my buddy’s spot to watch the game. He has some other friends that are joining. As I asked in a post prematurely before, who are you rooting for to win?! If you are outside the United States, let me know if you even watch American football?? Now, I’m sharing my son John Collazo’s desire to build his, “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand and get into becoming a marketing expert. I’m sharing his brand logo and profile picture that can be found on his social media platforms down below the advice. I appreciate the help with networking with him on social media. He is very intelligent and logical thinking and will be a future advertising/marketing executive if he keeps it up. John is my marketing manager and will become my future manager. If my book becomes a movie, tv show, play, etc., he will be my manager. John will also be marketing his brother’s video game streaming channel Tswoooh23_ on YouTube. We spoke about him earning his MBA in marketing in the future. Let’s shift gears again and talk about advice. Your New York homie found another question for your reading pleasure on Quora. My kneejerk thought, when I stumbled upon this question, was frustration with the person’s sensitive communication style. It’s frustrating to deal with super sensitive people. It’s a challenge to feel like you have to walk on egg shells around a person. A person tends to be concerned about the person over reacting to a simple conversation. Perhaps letting the person know ahead of time that you are just saying what you feel is necessary ahead of the chat? Are they super sensitive or is the other person just a bully? It is impossible to tell without reading text messages and listening to personal communications. Then again, some people are rather rough around the edges since they had very unforgiving life experiences. This makes it a challenge to communicate with a sensitive person who often cries and has melt downs at the drop of a hat. It is possible that both sides need to tweak their approach in order to make some progress. The question would be how exactly to both toughen and soften up each party in need? Do these two people even need to maintain a relationship? Is the person who is having melt downs in desperate need of therapy to help sort out and manage their emotions? In some situations, melt downs are temper tantrums and a poor way to communicate their dislike for the subject matter. Melt downs can also be a form of manipulation. I am not a fan of people who use melt downs in order to manipulate others. Clear and direct communication is a tall order to request from many people. Without giving away the store, here is the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“How do you deal with someone who has a lot of meltdowns over text message?”

By Veronica Thornton

MY RESPONSE:

“It’s hard to tackle this question without further information. If you are at work, as co-workers, and this co-worker keeps having meltdowns while at work and after responding to their text messages, this person may need to be spoken to by the manager. If this person can’t conduct themselves properly, this person either needs to stop reading texts during work hours or go home every time they disrupt the co-workers. If this situation is a private matter between two parties, you have to ask why is this person having a meltdown? Is this person taking everything that is said super personal? Study the triggers that cause meltdown person the emotional stress? When in a face to face meeting, does the other person always appear to cut the meltdown person down? Does meltdown person have a sense of inferiority? A bad temper? Do they jump to conclusions? When texting, it is hard to gauge the temperature of the message. This can cause a person to take a harmless text to a whole other emotional level. If you are the person texting the meltdown person, you will need to be super clear with your intentions each and every time. You may have to offer way more data in advance of a text conversation than you would normally. You may remind meltdown person that what you are about to say is either how you feel or that you are just joking with this person. You can’t control how another person reacts. You can only work on your end to try to be as clear as possible with your intention of your words. At least you know that what you have to say has a deep impact on the meltdown person. They would not react emotionally if you had no impact whatsoever on their life. Hopefully, you don’t take advantage of meltdown person’s emotions. I wish you better luck in the future with your interactions with the said meltdown person. #ConstructionTales”

Vol. #12: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Hopefully, you are hanging at home relaxing or diligently working day on this Saturday evening!?

Showcased Author- 1.) Joan Havelange

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Canadian author of four published mysteries. I live in a beautiful little prairie town, surrounded by hills, valleys, and lakes. I’m also a world traveller. The inspiration for ‘The Suspects’ comes from my visit to Russia. And I’m an avid golfer and I directed little theatre for 15 years. “Writing is a lot like directing; only my characters show up on time and always know their lines. Although sometimes they do go off in a direction that surprises me.” I began writing romances but soon found I was not the romantic type; murder is my line. The change of genre was the right choice, as my first whodunnit mystery, ‘Wayward Shot,’ was published by BWL Inc. in 2019. Followed by ‘Death and Denial,’ ‘The Trouble with Funerals,’ and my latest ‘The Suspects.’ I’m currently working on my next cozy mystery, “Murder Exit Stage Right.”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
On tour to Russia, my tour guide related a story about a tourist in her care who died in a Moscow hotel. And all the hoops she had to go through with the authorities. Of course, the cause of death in ‘The Suspects’ is murder.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do write in a comfy chair with my feet up. I’m a morning writer, except in the summer months, because I golf eighteen holes every morning. But I still try to write at least two hours a day.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Agatha Christie the original cozy mystery/ whodunit writer. Linwood Barcley a great storyteller, lots of plot twists. And Rhy Bowen, humour combined with mystery.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on my next mystery, ‘Murder Exit Stage Right.’ I directed little theatre for many years, so this mystery is a joy to write. The publishing date is in October of this year.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Awesome Gang. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. And online book clubs

Do you have any advice for new authors?
“The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” Quote from Terry Pratchett. The next step, edit, edit and edit again. And never give up.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” Quote from Terry Pratchett

What are you reading now?
The Amethyst Box by Anna Katherine Green

What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep writing mysteries. I have more ideas than time.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I can’t choose, too many good authors. By the way, does this island have a golfcourse?

Showcased Author- 2.) SS Turner

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been an avid reader, writer, and explorer of the natural world throughout my life which has been spent in England, Scotland and Australia. Just like Freddy in my first novel, Secrets of a River Swimmer, I worked in the global fund management sector for many years but realized it didn’t align with my values. In recent years, I’ve been focused on inspiring positive change through my writing (which resulted in my first novel Secrets of a River Swimmer), as well as trying not to laugh in unfortunate situations (easier said than done!). I now live in Australia with my wife, daughter, son, two cats, and ten chickens.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
It’s called Secrets of a River Swimmer.

My friend Matt and I used to jump into the River Tweed every few weeks, including in the depths of Scottish winters, just to see where it took us. Every time we immersed ourselves in the Tweed’s majestic waters we’d experience love, joy, and fun in more beautiful ways than we could have imagined on dry land. We’d laugh like kids at the silliest little things. We’d feel euphoric to be accepted and free and alive. We’d meet fascinating characters alongside the river who were shocked and amused that two crazy humans were swimming so close to the enormous salmon in the river. We’d have life-affirming conversations that put the world to rights, and that involved us speaking our truth to one another and to the universe. We always emerged from the river with newfound energy, clarity, and love for our lives. It was like pressing a reset button on life.

After a few years of swimming in the river once a month like this, Matt and I both noticed we felt healed. When we’d started, we were both lost in our careers. But each time we emerged from the river we were one step closer towards clarity of what we wanted from our lives. And after a few years, we were finally ready to make the career and other changes we needed to make. We were finally ready to take responsibility for all aspects of our lives.

And that’s why I wrote Secrets of a River Swimmer—to capture and immortalize the life-changing love, the fun, the joy, and the mysteries of the river’s world.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always listen to music when I’m writing. And I generally spend some time selecting the right music to match the scene and book I’m writing. For example, if it’s a peaceful introspective scene I may go with Max Richter or Laura Marling, while a more uplifting / energetic scene may call for All Hail the Silence or Gabriel and Dresden.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been influenced by many authors but I’d say Mark Twain has been a big influence, particularly Huck Finn. Twain’s ability to get inside his characters’ heads to beautifully express their emotions, motives, and real thoughts is so powerful. For me, this is the timeless beauty of writing, and it means we can all be transported back one hundred and forty years ago to when the novel is set to discover that people haven’t changed at all.

In terms of modern writers, Neil Gaiman has been an influence. I really enjoy the uniqueness of Neil’s story writing.

What are you working on now?
My next novel, The Connection Game, is a psychological thriller based in London.

A family of four, The Basilworths, have fallen on hard times after becoming victims to an online fraud. They are forced to move into welfare housing in London as they’ve been declared bankrupt. The flat they are allocated is located on the ground floor in a rough area, and the only light that enters the flat comes in through a tiny window which only provides a view of the feet walking past on the street above.

Benny, the husband and father, is angry about their downfall and starts ranting against the world. Then one day, he starts staring out the tiny window at the feet walking past on the street, and he calms down. There’s something about seeing people as nothing more than a pair of passing feet that’s therapeutic for him. However, watching the passing feet soon becomes a passion for him, and he starts noticing unusual patterns in the feet, patterns which deeply concern him.

The more he watches the feet, the more Benny believes the entire city is in serious danger. He convinces his children Will and Wendy to join his foot watching operation at the window, but his wife Belinda is concerned for his mental health. However, the more excited Benny becomes by the foot movements, the more Belinda is drawn into the mystery. She’s determined to discover if there’s any truth behind Benny’s inexplicable theories about the passing feet.

The Connection Game is due to be released towards the end of 2022.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Secrets of a River Swimmer is my first novel so I’m learning more about this as I go. I’ve been told by a few authors that the key is to stay positive and engaged in a wide variety of forums.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start writing a novel with a question rather than an answer in mind.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do your best and forget the rest.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Normal People by Sally Rooney. She’s been super successful so I’m enjoying experiencing her strong character creation skills.

What’s next for you as a writer?
This is a big year for me as I’m publishing Secrets of a River Swimmer in February and The Connection Game in October. These two books have taken a number of years to complete and I’m super excited to go to market with both of them. And the next novel I will be working on this year is a romantic comedy.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
The Women in White by Wilkie Collins
The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Mister God, this is Anna by Flynn

Showcased Author- 3.) Ali Ashhar

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Well, I consider myself an inquisitive soul who’s seeking the definition of life, and everything coming in its way. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Literature. I am the author of poetry collection, Mirror of Emotions. Being an introvert; my aura and art is often honed by inquisitiveness I follow in solitude. I observe things and people around me, and I believe curiosity is the key to be a good writer.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a poetry collection titled Mirror of Emotions. I feel if you have the art of putting emotions, experiences and situation into words, then you should utilize your art to inspire, motivate and heal people around you. You should have the goal of touching the hearts of million people with your art.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I try almost every genre I can.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
As far as inspiration is considered: I believe it to be something that comes from within only but undoubtedly there are sages like William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Robert Frost, WB Yeats, Rumi and Kahlil Gibran whom I look up to.

What are you working on now?
I am working on my next poetry collection.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I believe doing more and more author interviews through different media.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I would advice them to have faith in their art. When we are new, we are a bit nervous chasing perfection, but believe me if you try to be perfect you will never write a single word. So have faith in your skills and be optimistic. Don’t fear failure and keep learning everyday, and from anything you can in this universe.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To define yourself in your own way. Never let someone tell you that you can’t do this or that. No one knows your strength or weakness more than you do.

What are you reading now?
I am reading The History of Modern India.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I am working on my next poetry collection. I hope to keep motivating and healing people around myself through my art.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Learning how to fly by APJ Abdul Kalam
Secrets of divine love by A Helwa
Stories of the Prophets by Ibn Kathir
The Essential Rumi by Rumi

Vol. #11: Showcasing (3) More Awesome Gang Authors!!

Hello Everyone!

Hopefully, you are hanging at home relaxing or diligently working day on this Saturday evening!?

Showcased Author- 1.) Veronica Jeans

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written 5 books and 2 Social Ecommerce Planners.
I am an eCommerce business consultant, speaker, Shopify partner, lecturer, and bestselling author. I have been coaching and teaching business for 30 years but ecommerce for 10+ years. I help people get their products online and selling internationally with Amazon, Shopify etc.
I teach authors how to get paid in 3 days! and grow their email list to bring their readers back for more.
I also help them create micro videos to educate their readers on their books, lessons, which helps to sell more books. Creating ideas of how to sell more than books from their stores is essential for the times when books sales go down.
78% Of commerce businesses will fail in 2022. Most entrepreneurs have only a vague idea how to set up their business. In my new book, I provide business owners with the right way to start their online business to show them how to take advantage of the internet. What’s more, they don’t have to be tech-savvy to get up and running quickly.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Shopify Made Easy – Optimize Your Store.
I get the same questions all the time. How can I make more sales, how can I attract more customers.
In this book I show them all the different marketplaces they can sell to and also how to keep their websites/stores optimized for conversions and Google searches.
I love helping people with ideas and get very excited when they are successful.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I know of but I start writing in bed with my first cup of tea! Since I am a granny I always feel like Charlie and the Chocolate factories grandparents – not getting out of bed immediately and waiting for my tea!
Then I go for a walk and back to my book for another hour or so before I have meetings.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I actually started writing because I wanted to give a book when doing lectures or speaking engagements. I felt left out when I attended one in CA! Everybody said…it is a business card and you will get more speaking gigs. You won’t sell that many books!
2 years later and I am now selling 100+ book regularly every month just with my first book and I have just launched my next 2 in Dec 2021 and the latest one about 1 week ago. And my sales have been going up to 125+ already. I am having way too much fun doing this.

What are you working on now?
I am working on my 4th book in my 7 book series – Shopify Made Easy – Positioning Your Brand.
That should be out end of Feb – March, 2021.
I am also working on a short book – 115+ Ways To Market Your Products or Services (no title yet)

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon and Shopify right now for websites.
I am going to be selling on Ebay and all the other Ebook marketplaces by end of the month.
And I do Live recordings regularly on Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter and get invited to Amazon Live.
Amazon Ads
And promoting it to sites like this when I publish

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Treat your writing like a business. Know your goals for your business and not just your goal writing. Have a contingency plan if you sell on KDP so you can get paid before the 90 days!
Know where your customers are and how are they going to get to know you.
Treat your Amazon author page like a business brochure. Make sure you utilize all your assets.
Start writing blogs and feed them to your Amazon author page.
There are lots more tips but this is good right?

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Give yourself the gift of time!

What are you reading now?
Pat Flynn – Superfans
Burning Cove – Amanda Quick
(I read at least one fiction ebook a day maybe 2 days…)

What’s next for you as a writer?
Write more business books – I have 2 more ideas after the Shopify series.
Get more planners out and improve my planner.
Every year I have to update part of my series because Shopify updates all the time.
Create my courses – I will have 3 for my books by end of March.
Keep getting my name out so people buy my books 🙂

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Anything the Jayne Krentz writes.
Maybe a really super sexy book so I won’t forget about sex!
The next 2 I will have to find to get off the island, but:
How to build a boat from scratch
How to navigate the stars 🙂

Showcased Author- 2.) Teresa Vale

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Mozambique in the sixties and lived there until I was twelve, but the revolution and regime change in Portugal that led to Mozambican independence, as well as the civil unrest that followed, forced me and my family to leave Africa for good. I’ve lived in Lisbon, Portugal, with my family, ever since.
I pursued an executive career in the financial area but have always loved to write. For a few years now I’ve run the blog The Many Stories of a Woman. At this point in my life I have many stories to tell – stories lived and shared… And all these memories of places I love, music that moves me, books that have inspired me. These are a few of the reasons I began writing.
I love going to the beach and spending time with my sons and my friends. And, like most Portuguese, I would be entirely unable to exist without my cup of espresso!
So far I’ve only written one novel, “Love Secrets Lies”.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Love Secrets Lies” was loosely based on my experiences growing up in Africa and then moving to Europe. It deals with the pain of losing the place you’d always called home and the need to readjust, to reinvent yourself even, in a wholly different environment, while also dealing with the awkwardness and challenges of your teen years.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
This may be the blandest answer of all time, but I just sit down and start typing.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I would only mention a few authors. Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Emily Brontë, Barbara Erskine, Juliet Marillier, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, Joanne Harris…

Now, books. I read “Wuthering Heights” at 13 and it overwhelmed me with its emotional intensity. Characters like Heathcliff and Cathy will haunt you, they’ll hound your thoughts. I reread it two years ago, and once again felt its power. It is relentless. If “Wuthering Heights” doesn’t make you want to write a novel of your own, I don’t know what will.

What are you working on now?
I’m developing a couple of short stories which I intend to publish in the near future. Oh, and “Love Secrets Lies” is going to have a sequel, which I am working on right now.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That’s a tough one. I’m still trying to crack it. Instagram has turned out to be a powerful platform to discover new books and authors and, of course, promote your own. Goodreads I’ve found quite useful as well! Obviously I myself am open to tips and suggestions!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Well, I’m a new author, so all I can say is, write something you believe in. Write with passion, it’ll make a world of difference in the end.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
My editor has never been afraid to tell me certain scenes in early drafts of “Love Secrets Lies” were bland and unimaginative, and he pushed me to add depth and realism, to flesh out characters, to go into physical sensations like sight and taste and smell, to think of details as seemingly random and irrelevant as air temperature on a given day. It’s hard to distill his advice into a single sentence, but the book wouldn’t have turned out the way it did otherwise.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading “Sidi” by Arturo Pérez Reverte, the story of El Cid, the most famous Spanish hero of the Middle Ages.

What’s next for you as a writer?
There’s a ton of stories in my head waiting to be told. All I need is time. And I certainly want to continue improving my craft, because in this line of work you really never stop learning.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë, Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s “The Shadow of the Wind,” “Lady of Hay” by Barbara Erskine, and Orwell’s 1984.
Tough picking just four, though.

Showcased Author- 3.) Xzander Snow

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello there! My name is Xzander Snow; I am a 21 year old writer, and speaker. I have written 2 books: For The Bros: 7 Keys To Living Your Best Life, a non fiction book focused on mental health and positivity for men and The Tactical Mission, a fiction story soon to be published.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled, For The Bros: 7 Keys To Living Your Best Life. I wrote it in dedication to my friend Grant who took his life a day before his 25th birthday. If I had just 5 minutes to talk to him, what could I have said? I wrote down the 7 things that helped me in my darkest hours and wrote it out as a message to other guys who are in that place. All hope is not lost. Keep going, the best is yet to come.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think I do. I take FOREVER to write because it all starts out as random thoughts that are just in my head or I use in a speech or conversation. These thoughts then turn to notes written in the countless notebooks I have in my room or on the Notes app on my phone, and then get compiled into a solid train of thought while writing the manuscript. All this while watching a show, playing a game or working.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
John Maxwell is definitely one of my big non fiction inspirations. I’ve loved his writings from when I was younger and still do to this day. Another author is Chris Greenwood (aka Manafest). His book Fighter was a big inspiration behind the writing style of For The Bros. In terms of fiction, there’s too many authors to count. C.S. Lewis, Richard Paul Evans, Lee Child, Julie Kagawa just to name a few.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am working on promoting my book and I desire to have some online events where I can reach out to youth and young men to encourage them to be strong warriors.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Word of mouth. But it doesn’t stop there. Your story and WHY needs to be so strong that there is no excuse for someone to not buy your book. If you really believe in it, then why should you sound scared talking about it? Be bold and get the word out!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just do it. The longer you wait, the more you won’t do it. And if you feel stuck, find something to give you a good reason to keep going.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Robert G. Allen once said, “Don’t let the opinions of the average man sway you. Dream, and he thinks you’re crazy. Succeed, and he thinks you’re lucky. Acquire wealth, and he thinks you’re greedy. Pay no attention. He simply doesn’t understand.” I take that to mean do whatever it is you’re going to do anyway because people won’t get the picture. Just do it and see what happens.

What are you reading now?
Well I’m re-reading the Gone series by Michael Grant. I love the series because it asks the question, if you were suddenly isolated from the rest of the world and all they can do is watch, what would happen and how long will it take for everything to go wrong? A fantastic read and the follow up trilogy for the series is a mind bending send-off for the ages.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing a new Fiction series that I’ve been lore building for a few years now. I want to add more lore, but that will only delay it. The best way to explain the series is imagine if a weapon had a soul- well not just a soul but a body and mind of its own- its own world, history…and demons it has to face. And you as a human have to be the bridge to stopping our world and theirs from destroying the other…but you get some cool powers so its not all that bad.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Does it have to be 3 to 4? Oh well. I was thinking of 3-4 series but here’s my set of books I’d bring.

  1. The Horse & His Boy by C.S. Lewis (The best book in the Narnia series hands down)
  2. Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
  3. Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
  4. Fighter: 5 Keys To Conquering Fear and Reaching Your Dreams by Manafest (Chris Greenwood)

Advice: How To Reply To Indirect Communication

Photo Credit: Call To Action Marketing Logo- John Collazo, CEO
Photo Credit: Call To Action Marketing- John Collazo, CEO

Hello Everyone!

Sadly, I didn’t realize that Super Bowl Sunday is not happening until last week!? It’s for the best since I’m not ready for it anyhow. I have to handle some business this weekend. As I asked before, who are you rooting for to win?! If you are outside the United States, let me know if you even watch American football?? It’s Fridayyy regardless of the event delay!!! I’m sharing my son John Collazo’s desire to build his, “Call To Action Marketing” #CTAMarketing brand and get into becoming a marketing expert. I’m sharing his brand logo and profile picture that can be found on his social media platforms. My kneejerk thought when I stumbled upon this question was about the person’s indirect communication style. I find it frustrating when people do not get to the point of what they want to say. You may have to prompt the person to just speak directly what is on their mind. However, this may be just as difficult as pulling teeth. Why are they being indirect? Do they fear that you are going to verbally explode over them if you tell the truth? Do they tend to dodge drama like the plague? Are they trying to just be kind and not hurt your feelings? This all depends on the context of the situation. Depending on what the topic was about, the phrase can mean a few things. I offered what came to mind at the moment. What would you think if you heard this phrase? Would it satisfy your curiosity? Would you want to probe even further? For me, I think that it would totally depend on the situation. If it is not important, I would let lying dogs lie and do no further probing. If it was data that I really needed to know (say business purposes), I would become super annoying to get the data. I’m not into drama so I tend to dodge anything that would create drama. Some stuff is just not worth it in life to be dealing with unnecessary conflict. Without giving away the store, here is the posed question and my response down below:

POSED QUESTION:

“What should I reply when someone says “if you know you know”?”

By Farha Tasnim

MY RESPONSE:

“If I heard this phrase, I would think that they are saying that you have learned all that you need to know about the particular subject matter. It’s a veiled way to tell a person that probing on a matter further is not desired. They don’t want to give up any more details. It can also mean that only the people who already know about the situation are the only ones in the loop to the data. If you are an outsider of the circle, you are basically being told that you are no privy to the insider knowledge. Your reply would depend on where you stand in the situation. Good luck on dealing with people who are indirect with their communication. #ConstructionTales”

Hopefully my advice blog post is helpful today. Let me know if you ride or absolutely die with my advice? Of course, I’m joking as usual. If you hold a position, why do you believe the way you do? Hopefully, I helped the author with managing others with an indirect communication style. Anyways, I’m also sharing my latest (8) podcast episodes that are listed down below from The Verbally Disastrous Podcast, via links for Spotify & YouTube down below. If you are into reading on a Kindle, check out my newest short story release that belongs to my Construction Tales-Told By A Woman Kindle Vella Library short story series on Amazon down below. This new short story #11 is entitled, “Juggling Motherhood & Working With The Tools”. This short story covers my life as a widowed, single mother in the era when I juggled both motherhood and my career as a journeywoman electrician. The previous short story is #10 is entitled, “Early Life Lessons & Characters To Meet As An Apprentice”. If anyone has read any of my other previous short stories, by all means, let me know what you think? Check out the links for my book #ConstructionTales down below. Hopefully, I will hang out and do some fun activities with Melissa this weekend. I need to go focus on a little more pimping out my content on social media, some tasks, and then tackle my painting and my children’s audio book. Enjoy your Friday now that we are done grinding out the work week. I wish you a great morning/afternoon/evening on your side of the globe and a restful or productive day!
