I have written a rough draft of some of the topics that will be covered, along with my co-host Melissa, on our brand new podcast entitled, #VerballyDisastrous on Spotify. I shall announce when we load up the first episode as well as subsequent episodes. I wanted to share the topics with my readers so that you all will get an idea of our podcast’s theme. To give a better sense of the “culture” of our podcast, I will offer an overview of our dynamics as friends. My friends and I are very strong minded, independent ladies who are rather direct with our approach to communicating. We all have absolute love, respect, and loyalty towards each other within our social circle. It is fair to say that we are rather rough around the edges and not considered to be “dainty” or “soft” in nature. Melissa and I have been friends since around 2007. I was introduced to Melissa during an outing with another very close friend, her name is Tara. Tara is a fellow journeywoman electrician who I had worked with back during the first days of her apprenticeship. Tara will be on the podcast from time to time when her schedule allows. Tara has a family with a young toddler so her time is rather limited.

Melissa and I spend a tremendous amount of time together and go on many adventures together. We have most recently gotten into painting, acrylic pour art, and different craft projects. She just showed me today some electric wood designs that involve electricity that I have been assigned to figure out what is needed to make this project function. I am sure we will discuss the good, bad, and ugly on this attempt to carve some wood. I am sure that will be the spoken about on the podcast. We are very much into hitting the beach and lake in the summer, kayaking, camping, and visiting haunted houses in October. We are both mothers to young men. Melissa’s son is 29 years old and I have two sons that are aged 26 and 16 years old. We would both be lost if we had daughters- I find that humorous.

We are both homeowners and work together on various home projects. We were stripping wallpaper and window sills this past summer and restoring the space. Melissa just bought a home last year and we have a variety of projects to work on at her new house. We both tend to be problem solvers and prefer to be self-sufficient. We took a safe and slid it down the hill on a plastic sheet to get it to the basement that would have been treacherous to walk it down the hill. I have done many projects around my house that range from framing (I prefer metal studs), hanging sheetrock, electrical, painting, and various tasks. I watched guys on the job over the years and then went home and did the projects myself.

I need to make sure that you all know that we all have a love and appreciation for men and are not women who bash men. Besides Tara and Melissa, I prefer interacting with men vs interacting with women. As a kid, the majority of my friends were boys. I was always interested in boy activities like climbing trees, dirt bikes, building forts, and other activities. I have always had a gravitational pull towards males, such as my father, and their energy while still holding onto my feminine traits. I appreciate that most men are typically straight forward, have an issue and raise the problem, it gets resolved, and problem is over. However, with women it feels like there are hidden issues and no instant resolution to a problem. I don’t want to guess about how someone is feeling or if they have a secret ax to grind. Just tell me for f&cks sake!! I prefer, as well as my co-hosts, for a person to say what is on their mind no matter how savage the opinion comes across. I like not having to walk on eggshells around my friends and worrying about hurting their feelings. I am sure our conversations are considered “rough” or “raw” compared to a typical circle of women.

I have worked with men for most of my career and had previously preferred a male boss vs a female boss. However, I am lucky to have my current female boss who has a similar personality to mine and who is also a journeywoman electrician turned contractor. She has served as a tremendous mentor for developing my career and evolving into a Safety Manager position. I fully appreciate her and look after her interest in return. I am hoping I will get her on the podcast at some point to discuss a topic. I am also hoping that you have a rough idea of what the “Verbally Disastrous” podcast will be like in the near future as well. We are a group of women who like drinking beer, watching football, and are actively building our empire in a self-sufficient manner.

My sons have always viewed me as a tough woman. My father raised me to be tough and self-reliant. I was in the kitchen washing dishes one night and my son Johnny (he was about 7 years old at the time) approached me to ask me why he must be gentle with women. I then explained to him that women are built differently than men. They are considered by society to be delicate flowers that are caregivers with a gentle demeanor and need to be handled accordingly. My son gazed up out the window and expressed that he understood. He then slowly shifted his gaze towards me and said, “except for you mom. You are a cinder flower!” I laughed heartily at my son’s revelation. It was indeed a moment where I realized how my son sees me through his eyes. As long as I am not viewed as the town whore, I will take the cinder flower title (shrugging my shoulders).

My name is Leslie M. Jasper and I am the author of the book entitled, Construction Tales: Volume I: A Woman’s Journey to Become an Electrician. I would be embarrassed having a young person reading my book. Therefore, I created a teen version of the book. My edited teen version is entitled, Construction Tales: A Young Person’s Guide to Accomplish Anything in Life. For the sake of simplicity and the power of hashtags, my book goes by the hashtag #ConstructionTales.

My first children’s book is entitled, Not All Girls Play With Dolls. It serves as a prequel to #ConstructionTales. My illustrator Anastasia Taranenko, who hails from Russia, finished my illustrations despite the stress from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. My children’s book went live on Amazon by March 15, 2022. My books are in paperback, e-book, and audio on the following platforms: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, and Audible. The book was featured, via the Combined Book Exhibit, in a few different book fairs. I even used my Combined Book Exhibit trailer on the Verbally Disastrous YouTube channel. I write various Kindle Vella short stories under the title, Construction Tales: Told By A Woman in the Kindle Vella Library.

As I have mentioned before, I am a journeywoman electrician by trade. I now work as a site safety manager, as an independent contractor, on projects throughout New York City. I started my electrical career back in 1993 as a Construction Apprentice in the U.S. Navy Seabees. I then continued my electrical career as an apprentice electrician when I joined Local #3 IBEW since 1995 until today. I worked with the tools until the year 2014. During that time, we were still suffering from the effects of the 2008 recession with a huge block- between one to two years of employment between jobs. I started working in the office via learning autoCAD and engineering with the largest electrical contractor in New York City. Over time, I got a shot to work as a project manager within a team in the company. I did PM work for a few other electrical contractors on a variety of short-term projects. By 2019, I got an opportunity and was encouraged to study and take a series of safety credential exams. By the end of 2021, I earned my Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and my NYC DOB Site Safety Manager license.

I pulled the trigger on creating The Verbally Disastrous Podcast and releasing my very first episode back on February 08, 2021. A few people had suggested, over the years, for me to create a podcast since I bring unique perspective. I didn’t know where or how to even start. It took some patience and some exploring to actually make it happen. I am the host, along with my occasional co-host Melissa Polito, of The Verbally Disastrous Podcast With Leslie & Melissa. The Verbally Disastrous Podcast is hosted on Anchor and is available globally on +20 podcast platforms. Some of those major podcast platforms include: Apple Podcasts, Deezer, I Heart Radio, Pandora Podcasts, Radio Public, Spotify, and YouTube. We are just two random career chicks sharing our thoughts on a variety of topics. Now that I got a new laptop, I will be working on figuring out how to incorporate video with my podcast episodes. I need to learn how to go live on Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Our goal is to make a best effort to try and steer clear of religion and politics! Those subjects are heavy, fill people with emotion, and just ruins the vibe of a discussion. Our goal is to find very odd, funny, unusual, and weird topics to discuss. I have previously laid out some topics that we will discuss in the Season #1, Episode #2 podcast episode. However, we randomly switch gears with our topics at a moment’s notice. Why? Because we are…. I am honored to write this review for “Construction Tales: A Young Person’s Guide to Accomplish Anything in Life” by Leslie Jasper. Leslie Jasper is a successful female Journeywoman Electrician in a field traditionally dominated by men.

The reason I am so honored to write this particular review is because this book is far from what it’s title suggests. In “Construction Tales,” Leslie Jasper challenges her readers to be open-minded and to read between the lines to get the most meaning out of her tales. If the reader only reaches the conclusion that the book is full of dirt on her male coworkers and their deficiencies, then the reader’s ignorance is obvious & the true meaning of this book was missed.

This book is not a guide in the literal sense. If you want a guide on how to be successful in the electrical industry, pick up “Electrical & Lighting for Dummies.” This book is an autobiographical, extremely personal, account of Leslie’s journey from her first year apprencticeship and leading up to the final chapter & publication of this book in 2014 which at the time was her 17th year as a full-fledged, experienced electrician journeywoman.

Jasper’s individual journey is a unique road she alone took from novice to the professional woman she is today in the electrical industry. She tells the truth about every challenge she went through.

Jasper writes from her heart. I respect Jasper for all of her honest truths. She is real in a world that shuns it. A world that looks at people who don’t conform to society’s standards as a menace to others. But in fact, Leslie is special because she refuses to back down or be told she cannot break the norms of what society deams acceptable for women. She breaks the mold. For this reason, Leslie proves herself as a leader instead of a follower. Like she says on page 127, “Few women go against the grains of society to even make an attmept” to reach their full potentials.

As a female, Leslie chose a difficult road in life. She has not looked for an easy way out but instead has accepted all challenges placed before her. When bosses challenged her & coworkers watched to see if she would fail, she explains how she worked her tail off to prove them all wrong. Leslie explains throughout the book that if you are willing to work hard & be a strong female, the men in this industry for the most part will learn to accept you. She has proved herself & her abilities to not only herself but to all of those around her. Another suitable title for this outstanding book is “Leslie Jasper: A Force to be Reckoned With.”

Interestingly, part of the reason she chose to write this book, as she explains to the reader, is unique all in itself. Leslie uses this book as a form of release to separate her past from her present. She doesn’t hound on any past derailments or losses. Additionally, she seeks revenge on the people who tried to hold her back. On page 115, she gives a powerful statement about this.

Jasper has the ability to compartmentalize her life into separate sections in which she has either endured major loss, faced great challenges, grown as a electrician and so forth. Many times the sections overlap. Jasper has the ability to step back & view her past from the outside. She is not held back by her past. Her past is actually what propels her forward.

This book offers many powerful take home lessons on how to be successful. Pages are referenced in parenthesis:

Learn from your inevitable mistakes and don’t repeat them (76)

Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself (77)

I get the sense from her book that Leslie Jasper is a strong woman both physically and mentally. I can only see further successes for her as she continues her life journey. Many doors are open for her.

The audio version of the book, started in 2015, has finally been released on Audible. I went in a studio, Raw Recording, out of Patterson, NY. I have been busy with work so it was placed on the back burner. With some spare time in 2019, I was finally able to get it ready for sale. It took alot of effort and patience to finish this project. As a woman who has learned tech things in the past 5 years and used to tools, this is a great achievement. I didn’t realize that people have monthly Audible subscriptions vs just picking up one book. hello everyone!

I responded to a friend’s question regarding being in a relationship with a woman who is fiercely independent. He asked if attempting to date a woman who is “too independent” ruins it due to her high level of independence?? I thought about it and here is my response below. Feel free to respectfully agree/disagree.

I do put thought into these types of questions because they do hit home. I may have scared off many of potential suitors in my day due to their perceptions of how an independent woman operates her life. I don’t believe that I missed out on life experiences since they were not meant to be. I have a wonderful man in my life who actually took the time to ask me loads of questions and gain an understanding about who I am as a woman and what makes me tick. He has then worked to systematically serve as my rock, my voice of reason, the man who compliments my flaws, and the man who views me as his treasured stone. He finds what I am capable of doing with my hands and my mind to be extraordinary and it compliments what he brings to the table. We have had some rough patches in the past 3 years and even have taken a break from each other. This was needed, in hindsight, to see if we could weather the storm and fix what was broken and move past it. In addition, it was a good moment to see if we missed each other and how much was not having each other going to impact each of us. I have had a spiritual advisor for the past 5 years now serve as my guide. It has been spot on and well worth the time and money spent. Not to mention the accuracy of her readings on points in my life!! I either see Cindy Grogan in person or chat on the phone with her to do a reading. I have developed from personal growth on learning what works for me and what doesn’t work on different aspects of life. I didn’t intend to speak about Cindy but her guidance on this life path of mine is instrumental and credit is due to her ability to be so on point!! My response to dating an independent woman:

An independent woman is self sufficient financially, physically, and emotionally. She would like to have that connection but she survives without it. A man comes into her life and his question is why is this woman is why is this woman “too independent” (missing alot of details)?? Instead of asking why and allowing it to be a sticking point, work to be the kind, loving, and the supportive man she needs in order unravel the layers of armour she must put on to protect her heart from the world. She is fighting for your hand to try to take over the wheel of her life. That wheel is her sense of security and way of survival. Why should she give up that power to a man who merely requests it?? You need to SHOW that you are consistent and capable of taking the wheel as a co-pilot not just being the captain.
I have established my way of life and I am NOT going to give the keys to my castle to just anyone. I will never be “dependent” and ever lay in a fetal position. I do not view “independence” as a dirty word. I fully respect women who choose the “dependent” since it is risky but reaps rewards if done correctly. I have chosen to do life “the hard way” for the past 20 years. I had found no one in my travels that I felt comfy letting them take the “wheel” of my life as a co-pilot.
I do have someone in my life that I am slowly offering the “keys” to the palace due to his constant work to SHOW me that he has my back. This is accomplished through being the “better road” in managing life challenges that end up panning out better than my method. His goal is to earn that spot as my “co-pilot” since I have clearly demonstrated my ability to not only be a great co-pilot but fully run the ship in the event he can’t or serve as his rock during tough times.
Prior to wanting to take the wheel, you need to review her life experiences and figure out if you are capable of being the physical rock in the time of need or merely speaking that you want to be one. Then, you work to consistently be the co-pilot that she needs….
